That the best way to clean them is with a large dish of boiling water, containing 2 or 3 chopped lemons with the juice squeezed into it, then put the oven on maximum temperature for about 45 minutes. shock

Apparently you should then just be able to wipe it clean without too much elbow grease.

I haven't tried this myself, but will mention it to Mr P, (oven cleaner extrordinaire) who usually favours Oven Pride.

How often should I clean my oven? It probably gets used 2-3 times a year?

gillybob Thu 10-Dec-15 15:23:34

Must be pretty stinky though queenMab99

queenMab99 Thu 10-Dec-15 13:30:39

I don't clean mine at all, the heat will kill any germs.

Lakeland do oven pride . I just put the shelves in the dishwasher and take them out before they are completely dry as then any grunge still on is soft and rubs off.

elegran a sliding glass door sounds much more sensible. Elrel I live in fear of losing the screws and the little metal pieces that hold the glass in place! This is the most stupid design I have ever seen. There is a small top oven (or grill) and the larger bottom oven. Both have gaps between the glass panels at the top of the doors so splashes get down in between the glass plates.

daffydil I did buy liners for both ovens but did not realise that the one in the small oven would smoke and disintegrate when I used the grill function!

shysal I might try the oven pride zip lock bags if they are not too expensive. Can they be used more than once? And where can you buy them?

Elrel Fri 20-Nov-15 20:58:37

I didn't know the double glass doors could be unscrewed, Grandma2213!

rosequartz Fri 20-Nov-15 20:13:57

Almost a joy to do!
Almost, but not quite shysal!

(yes, it is good, why do I put off doing it?)

JamJar1 Fri 20-Nov-15 15:49:20

It's getting harder to find people who fix things, well it is round here but I do try especially with larger appliances. All that land waste. sad
The TV repairman was a regular visitor to our house when I was growing up. I was fascinated by all the paraphernalia to be found in the back of our television.

shysal Fri 20-Nov-15 12:17:02

To those who mentioned also having dirty oven shelves - yes mine get filthy, but Oven Pride includes a giant zip-lock poly bag in which to put them with some of the liquid. Turn every which way a few times and leave overnight, then next morning all they need is a wash and they are sparkling. I also include my enamel baking trays in the bag and they come up a treat too. Almost a joy to do!

Oven working fine now, Charleygirl!

No idea what the bill will be, the same local independent firm came to fix the washing machine a few weeks back and I'm still waiting for the invoice for that!

They have a good reputation, have been trading for years, and also sell new and second hand appliances.

What I like about them is that they do try to fix things, rather than do the intake of breath, tell you the appliance has done well, but isn't it time you thought about a new one?

Actually, I'm slightly disappointed, I never did like the oven and had been having a look on line at new ones, but as the one I had earmarked was £250 (not expensive by todays standards) I'm pretty sure that mending was the better option financially!

KatyK Fri 20-Nov-15 10:32:33

Oops sorry phoenix . Note to self - read the title properly blush

Charleygirl Fri 20-Nov-15 09:59:41

rosesarered it is probably the same franchise! This post has reminded me that it needs to be done again, thanks phoenix. I hope that the fellow managed to repair your oven and that the bill was not too horrendous.

JamJar1 Fri 20-Nov-15 09:59:40

I'm guessing, when I use the method in the microwave it's the juice that's cleansing and the lemon skin just masks, kills food smells Charleygirl.

rosesarered Fri 20-Nov-15 09:52:28

I do the same as charleygirl and the same price too! I call him every year, and that yearly clean keeps things shiny ( it's like a brand new oven after the treatment.)Due to back problems I cannot clean it myself, and tbh for that price it's well worth it.

Greyduster Fri 20-Nov-15 09:50:10

I use a liner for the bottom. I got it from Aldi and it's brilliant.

Charleygirl Fri 20-Nov-15 09:45:26

I get a fellow in every 3 years or so to clean it for £45 and to me it is worth every penny because I am like Anno. I could and I will put the shelves through the dishwasher and see if that makes a difference. I do not know what the answer is apart from not using it after it has been cleaned.

I feel phoenix that it would cost a lot of dosh to run it on its highest setting for 45 minutes.

I buy lemon juice which I squeeze out of a container, would that be the same or does it need the actual flesh of the lemon to work?

daffydil Fri 20-Nov-15 09:34:24

You can get a liner for the bottom of the oven which can be easily washed in the sink after each use. The top is a problem though. I got the liner from Lakeland.

Elegran Fri 20-Nov-15 09:34:14

The inner glass door on mine slides out.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 20-Nov-15 09:28:22

The glass double door thing is so stupid. I didn't know about that when we bought our cooker.

JamJar1 Fri 20-Nov-15 09:08:30

I use lemon method, in cup, for microwave, white vinegar for kettle.
Wipe any spills asap with oven.

Grandma2213 Fri 20-Nov-15 01:00:39

Self cleaning yes but why is the top and the bottom not made of the self cleaning stuff? They seem to be the bits that get the most filthy as splashes go up and drop down!

shysal I agree the shelves are also hard to clean. annodomini I don't have a dishwasher!

Then there are the glass double doors that you have to unscrew!

Have just spent several hours cleaning small (grill) and large ovens so this is very pertinent!! Granted they haven't been done in 18 months but they do get a quick wipe most weeks!

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 19-Nov-15 23:31:33

I would be miffed if I bought a self cleaning oven to find out I still had to wipe it clean! grin

phoenix Thu 19-Nov-15 22:33:36

KatyK he didn't come to clean my oven, (Mr P does that) if you look at the OP, he was the man who came to mend it!

Grannyknot Thu 19-Nov-15 21:21:01

Thats how I clean my microwave - lemon juice and water on full power for 5 minutes. It works like a charm. (Excepting if you forget to put enough water in with the lemon juice - then you end up with a stinking bowl of black cement and an oven still dirty!) grin

grannylyn65 Thu 19-Nov-15 21:12:32

annodomini grin
