That the best way to clean them is with a large dish of boiling water, containing 2 or 3 chopped lemons with the juice squeezed into it, then put the oven on maximum temperature for about 45 minutes. shock

Apparently you should then just be able to wipe it clean without too much elbow grease.

I haven't tried this myself, but will mention it to Mr P, (oven cleaner extrordinaire) who usually favours Oven Pride.

Elegran, I promise not to send you any messes!

Candelle Sat 19-Dec-15 00:16:23

I thought she was rather asinine (such a pretty young thing and she should have better things to do than to repeatedly clean her oven) but each to their own!

Elegran Fri 18-Dec-15 19:14:43

The lists of "I'm on" and "Last hour" show shortened bits of posts with things like "I meant to add that when visiting my optician, the young ass . . ." which made me wonder just what the young ass did that was so asinine.

My list of emails is the same. If I get a PM it informs me that "A gransnet member with the username XXXX has sent you a mess . . ."

I meant to add that when visiting my optician, the young assistant told me (and I have absolutely no idea quite how we managed to reach this topic of conversation!) that whenever she had a spare afternoon, she loved to relax by cleaning her oven!

I really did clean my oven (I know, I know, about time too, some would say...) last weekend after seeing this thread.

We also - for the first time - were brave enough to remove the oven door to take out and clean those pesky panes of glass (and there were four of them, no less. I always thought there were three!).

I can now see what I am burning

Teehee - glad I'm not the only one.

rosequartz Sat 12-Dec-15 13:22:33

I have a lovely natural paste and it did nothing whatsoever on my oven, perhaps I was supposed to use it weekly grin

the cleaning solution had eaten a hole in the concrete. Powerful stuff!
[gasp]
Well, I'm not surprised because if you get any on your arm it burns and leaves a scar!

I have just bought some Oven Pride to have another go, as I cleaned my oven with the oven cleaner from Lidl and it just slid off the sides.

oldgoat Fri 11-Dec-15 21:58:59

I put the Oven Pride bag containing the dirty shelves on the floor of the garage overnight to do its work. In the morning I discovered that the bag had sprung a leak and the cleaning solution had eaten a hole in the concrete. Powerful stuff!

Remove the racks, spray them with a degreaser and leave them to one side. Warm the oven to 50 degrees. Spray the oven with any oven cleaner, leave it for about 5 minutes, then with a small scraper, similar to a stanley knife blade, scrape all the black residue of the oven and wipe it with paper towel. Afterwards just wipe the excess cleaner off with a damp cloth. It takes me a maximum of fifteen minutes and you don't need to drown the place with the dirty oven cleaner water at the end. I used to hate cleaning the oven but this way it doesn't feel like such a great chore.

pattie Fri 11-Dec-15 18:35:56

Can't say I lose too much sleep over the state of my oven. Did try the cleaner sold in aldis it was good but prefer the alternative is getting a man in. He charges £50 once every two years bliss.

Hellebore Fri 11-Dec-15 15:16:43

I swore by this product until I found the Oven Pride which is must easier to use and just as good if not better. Better still it is much cheaper and no p&p x

annodomini Fri 11-Dec-15 15:14:30

Mine did get to the right temp and the sides of the oven are fine, but then I don't roast meat in it so don't get much spattering which is probably why the oven is reasonably clean to begin with. However, the glass door is another matter. I don't know why it's so badly stained.

MaggieKnockater Fri 11-Dec-15 14:58:14

My oven's about the same age as yours, annodomini, and I have tried to use the self-cleaning function - it wouldn't get up to temp and said it was too dirty! I can still see in through the glass door (just).
Manufacturer's instructions say warm soapy water and a microcloth - what planet are they on?

pennturner Fri 11-Dec-15 14:34:06

The oven cleaning instruction for my rayburn is to sweep out any bits from the oven floor the rest is self cleaning! Mostly I use a remoska when it is not lit in warm weather so no oven cleaning here.

Candelle Fri 11-Dec-15 13:45:03

I should perhaps mention that when I do clean the oven I use 'Oven Mate' from Lakeland. This is a liquid in a bottle which is painted on with a brush. One leaves it on until it turns from clear to brown in colour, then wipe it off. It is quite effective but of course won't work between those blessed glass shelves (designed by a man who never cooks?).

I have tried using my 'self-cleaning' oven setting but it was not very effective. I certainly wouldn't pay more for an oven with this function, were I choosing another.

I tried the lemon with water in the microwave but that was not particularly good either. Perhaps it is something I am not doing correctly?

Candelle Fri 11-Dec-15 13:40:03

Last week there was a discussion on cleaning carpets and I then felt compelled to drag the VAX carpet cleaner out and do my sitting room and hall.

Today it's ovens. My afternoon is now completely spoiled as I now know what I have to do... Grrr!

Can anyone start a thread about sitting eating cream buns and reading a book?

Hellebore Fri 11-Dec-15 12:57:01

I use one lemon in a basin of water to clean microwave. I'm not absolutely sure the lemon is necessary, I think the hot steam on its own is enough to loosen the grime. I wipe it out with a microfibre cloth. That said I don't cook anything messy in my microwave so it never gets really dirty. The lemon makes the kitchen smell nice though.
Regarding the main oven, I use one of those kits that comes with a huge plastic bag to put shelves/ trays in. I don't put all the solution on the bag and use this to do the inside of the oven itself. It's important to keep turning the bag during the soak to make sure all bits are done. It works like a dream with the minimum of effort. I do this about every three months, if I leave it longer than that the oven smells when it's on, I think it's the residual fat from roasts that causes this.

FinnMcCool Fri 11-Dec-15 11:52:21

I put my oven shelves in the dishwasher once, and they went all sort of dull. Its like the chrome shine has been washed off.
It bothers me slightly, but since no one sees them I try not to notice myself.

miep Fri 11-Dec-15 11:36:40

Oven Pide comes in a box with the ziplock bag, bottle of cleaner and gloves. Brilliant stuff. HHome Bargains have oven liners for 49p and they work just as well as the more expensive ones so you can change them frequently.

Marieeliz Fri 11-Dec-15 11:35:53

How do you keep your oven liner from blowing around the bottom in a fan oven?

gillybob Thu 10-Dec-15 15:38:31

I wouldn't bother if I were you Galen 2-3 times a year is less than a weeks worth of use in my house !
