Do you iron your sheets?

I am sitting here with a pile of ironing - yes, that would be on a Saturday night - and wondering why I am ironing the bedsheets. Am feeling rebellious (this is what two glasses of red wine does to one). Does it really matter? Does anyone else bother ironing duvet covers and sheets or do you just put them on all wrinkly?

No, definitely do not iron bed linen. There really is no need. If you hang them up straight to dry, they don't crumple. With fitted sheets they stretch out flat anyway.

The same goes for clothing. I only iron summer stuff which you can't get away with not ironing, shirts etc. the rest, if hung out to dry will generally not crease. I may occasionally iron my jeans if they are crumpled, but that's about it. Also I don't have a tumble dryer so have to make sure that clothing is laid flat when drying.

I can't remember when I last used the iron either. I have invested in a lovely tumble dryer which dries the clothes so that they don't need ironing. However, when I used to iron, I used to put the sheet on the ironing board and ironed other clothes over the sheet - turning the sheet every so often, therefore ironing two things at once.

Incidentally, my eldest son once had a girlfriend who ironed his socks !

Yes, I iron bedding, teatowels, table linen. My younger daughter, who I childmind for doesn't iron, how I'd love to do it for her...but wouldn't dare offer.

Oh well, I'm probably going to shock everyone. The only thing I DON'T iron are my tights.

As previous members have said, sheets are so much more enjoyable to sleep in when ironed, also the duvet cover slides onto the duvet easier.

Towels, tea towels etc all take up less room in the drawer and knickers are so much more comfortable to wear if ironed. It's nice to have the crutch nice and flat and not all crunched up, and no I don't wear 'big' knickers, I've only just got rid of all my g-strings. Socks too are less likely to get into folds inside your boots if ironed.

My parents had a guest house and I was brought up to iron everything, so I suppose It's stuck with me, but there is very little I could be persuaded to stop ironing. I can't say I like it, but I used to do it while listening to The Archers every Sunday when I was working, but now I don't listen to it any more and since retiring I can iron when I feel like it. So watch this space, I feel a change might be on the way

Afraid I'm a rebel ..... I iron just about everything, if it's got any wrinkles it gets ironed. I particularly like my bedding to be nicely ironed, nothing like getting into a nice smooth freshly pressed bed.

I never iron the fitted bottom sheet but do prefer the 'feel' of properly ironed pillowcases. The duvet cover is a pain to iron but I it looks so much better if I do. DS1 irons his shirts and the GCs' school shirts and blouses. DiL does the cleaning.

I hate ironing and until I took very early retirement I paid my daughter to do it. Seemed reasonable to me, if she hadn't done it I would have sent it away to be done !!

Now I have no income , and no job lol I feel obliged to do it myself. Luckily himself has retired too so no more uniform shirts which I loathed . Pyjamas are now a dress option for me , so that cuts down on the volume too. BUT I do iron sheets, duvets, pillowcases and tea towels. I've been spoils and I like them pressed so if it means I have to do it myself so be it lol

Only if I'm trying to put off dealing with some paperwork - but perhaps I should have posted this on the procrastination thread! grin

adnil1949 Sun 29-Nov-15 10:29:52

I don`t iron anything in the winter and in the summer only t-shirts.

Greyduster Sun 29-Nov-15 10:35:22

I'm quite surprised by how many GN's don't iron anything! I now wonder how much I could get away with not ironing (apart from bed linen, that is!). Is it something that you have to psych yourself up to, after a lifetime of pressing, or not?

glammanana Sun 29-Nov-15 10:35:58

I have to have ironed bedding its always been a passion of mine and I love to slip into a cool crisp smooth bed,I don't bother with everyday t-shirts or leggings as they come out of dryer or off the line crease free most times,mr.glamma irons his own shirts always has done since instructing me when we where first married how his mum used to iron his shirts so he got the message and has done his own ironing since then !!
I am now off to iron some sheets which need the valance ironing (painful procedure) so will no doubt be having a fight with the ironing board for the next half hour.

shelac Sun 29-Nov-15 10:38:22

No I dont iron anything but my husband does while he watches Rugby but he does struggle with the sheets a bit!

Vonnie123 Sun 29-Nov-15 10:38:30

Freshly ironed sheets is a must for me and, like whitewave, if I could I'd have clean sheets every day. My one indulgence if I ever won the lottery would be to have someone do it for me.

angie95 Sun 29-Nov-15 10:45:01

Snap. if I can get away with no ironing, the better, I used to take ironing in, to make ends meet, when my son was a toddler, as childcare was to expensive, and I did enjoy it, now, NO,, I do iron, but only when it is necessary and never iron sheets x

Jen807 Sun 29-Nov-15 10:47:17

Love Ironed sheets, so I do it an easy way, Fold them up as soon as they come off the line or out of the Tumbler, then pop them on the board, and iron on top of them, Simples!! Have to admit fitted sheets are a challenge, but if they are folded up, I just do a quick whizz with the iron, but flat sheets, its foolproof!

EmHar Sun 29-Nov-15 10:59:29

Are you joking!- that's hilarious! Life is too short ......

hulahoop Sun 29-Nov-15 11:00:12

I'm like you shysal I would love fresh ironed cotton sheets every day I can't manage that so I like to iron that I also like my pj,s and nighties ironed my daughter and d in law do very little ironing and say I'm crackers( think they mean about ironing ) !

Teetime Sun 29-Nov-15 11:02:21

I don't iron anything- DH does it all except undies. I can't stand unironed clothes and sheets; certainly couldn't sleep in anything other than a completely wrinkle free bed. If I could be bothered I'd have clean sheets every night.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 29-Nov-15 11:03:15

Not fitted under sheet. But yes to pillowcases and duvet covers. And DH's pj's. My nightie might get a quick skim over to the front.

lilihu Sun 29-Nov-15 11:07:32

No never!!!
All bedding is poly/cotton. I smooth out when drying. Fold and smooth when dry. Always looks great. I ironed them once many many tears ago and they didn't look the slightest bit different.

Years ago when I had a "dress up" job and no spare time, I paid a succession of young relatives to do my ironing.

Then my husband added a subscription to a local ironing service to my Christmas gift one year!

In more recent years, fabrics have changed and so many do not need ironing. After gentle washes, I dry everything on hangers and smooth them down. No wrinkly clothes here!

I now iron once in blue moon, if that! I'd rather spend my time doing something enjoyable!!

Maranta Sun 29-Nov-15 11:07:40

I was always taught that tea towels dried things better if they were not ironed..but as I never dry the dishes anyway, it doesn't matter. What a slut I am wink

MammaN Sun 29-Nov-15 11:15:59

I'm afraid I do. Sorry. I'm a princess, can't stand crumply bed linen or lumps in the bed. I like it nice and fresh and cool. I also iron shirts, tshirts, trousers and the occasional tablecloth/tea towel. Could never understand why DMIL ironed towels but I must be as bad in others' eyes I guess. DS doesn't own an iron - I found when we stayed recently. He mostly looks ok but doesn't need to wear shirts for work. Can't see how you could look businesslike with a crumpled shirt.

Possiejim Sun 29-Nov-15 11:31:48

There's is nothing like nice ironed sheets on a newly made bed, and I find ironing relaxing and satisfying, but I too do not iron socks!

Teacher11 Sun 29-Nov-15 11:34:13

I never used to iron duvet covers as the quality of the cotton on a patterned Laura Ashley duvet cover was so good they came out of the dryer smooth. However, the last one, a white satin stripe cover, is thinner and creases horribly so I iron it as I am fussy and like the bed looking gorgeous. I don't iron fitted sheets as they stretch smooth on the bed. I iron two men's shirts and my own top and cardigan every day and the house bedding weekly. I quite like ironing and it calms me down especially when I am listening to a Radio Four Extra drama series on 'catch-up' as I tackle the clothes.

Wilks Sun 29-Nov-15 11:34:16

I iron most things always when there is a good play on radio 4. I don't have a tumble dryer as I don't need one so clothes are a bit crumpled when I bring them in. I must confess to not washing my clothes as much as I used to.
