I am fed up having to raise my voice and /or turn up the radio while my kettle is boiling. Does anyone know of a make of kettle which is 'quiet' while boiling.

I've gone back to a gas kettle, along with a whistle! Lovely, takes me back a few years which is just what I needed.

The fact that it takes four times longer to boil in the kettle you gave a link to, of course.

crun Mon 07-Mar-16 13:58:12

Isn't what because it's only 650W? Yes, the small kettle will take about four times longer to boil because it's lower power, but there's no economy in using the smaller kettle because the energy you pay for is the same. Maggie was saying that her kettle is economical and boils quickly, neither of which is the case by comparison with a larger one. (It is uneconomical to boil two cups when you only need one, but there are large kettles that will boil a single cup nowadays.)

Ana Sun 06-Mar-16 12:05:15

Isn't that just because it's only 650 watts though?

"I have a small Kenwood kettle that only takes 2 cupfulls, so it's economical."

The cost of boiling water is determined by the amount you're boiling and the temperature it starts from, not the kettle size. A mug of water costs about 0.3p to boil, but it just takes longer to boil in a smaller kettle, nearly four times longer if it's like this one.

My friend has just had a new kitchen installed and treated herself to a boiling water tap. It's brilliant - instant cuppas! Quite expensive but something to think about if you're having kitchen done.

Do any of you have a Teasmade?
You don't need an alarm clock ,it would wake up a whole house.

I have a small Kenwood kettle that only takes 2 cupfulls, so it's economical. I fill it from the filter jug. It boils quickly so is not too much of a nuisance. Then I fill it ready for next time.

We have one that is more like an urn so instant water on tap.fairly expensive initial outlay though some traditional kettles can cost similar.wonderful for instant drinks day and night as we keep it on 24/7.
We wouldn't be without it now!

Yes Newquay, I am with you on the World Service! Some of the "jingles" are mega loud!

Newquay Sat 05-Mar-16 22:23:57

Slightly off piste I know but, talking of volume, is anyone else driven mad by the change of volume on the radio? I'm an insomniac and often have the radio on (quietly) during the night-DH being deaf so hears v little when his hearing aids are out BUT the change in the volume between items drives me mad. And then there are the loud Big Ben chimes, why do we need that at midnight for goodness sake? And then, suddenly, when we go from Radio 4 to World Service do we suddenly have the national anthem (Don't get me started on that!). If I keep it too low i can barely hear the progs but if it's turned up a tiny bit, the in between items blare out and if perchance I've just nodded off it wakes me up! Grrr!

I have recently purchased the Morphy Richards Brita Filter Jug Kettle and it is the best I have ever had you do not even no it is on until you hear it click off when it has boiled. You can even just boil one cup.

I have a duolite and it's very noisy! I do live in hard water area but descale it regularly.Id buy a new one if it was quieter!may give the George one at Asia a try for a fiver!

NotSpaghetti Sat 05-Mar-16 16:00:10

crun is right. I went on this quest 18 months ago and it was pointed out to me that it is because the modern ones have the concealed element. It is a sort-of echo chamber, amplifying the noise.
Even the quietest of these seem noisy when compared to my old one... May search out the George one though - at a fiver it might be worth a go!

I got the instant water boiler from the Coopers catalogue(£39.99) which delivers boiling water straight into your cup for tea or coffee and is very quiet. It's great for that, but not any use if you need a whole kettlefull.

Funnygran Sat 05-Mar-16 15:33:41

When we had the kitchen upgraded a few years ago we had one of the boiling water taps installed. Great idea as you don't waste hot water and it seems to be economical to run. But the noise it makes is deafening and all conversation ceases while it's running!

Ours is a Phillips , I sometimes think I have forgotten to turn it on !

Willow500 Sat 05-Mar-16 13:39:03

My kettle is so noisy I have an old plastic one in the garage which I put on when hubby is still in bed to avoid waking him. That one is really quiet so I think the metal base making the metal ones sound like a drum is a good point.

bonji Sat 05-Mar-16 13:35:50

We have recently had to buy a new kettle and I said to DH I wanted a plastic one, as living in a very hard water area these are easier to descale, and a quiet boiling one. Being someone not known to spend more than necessary on such things he came home with one from Asda which cost £5.00. It is a George home 1.7L cordless kettle with a 2 year guarantee and it is brilliant. Easy to clean and so quiet that we sometimes have to check we have switched it on. Not a really fast boil but that isn't a problem for us.

Lupatria Sat 05-Mar-16 12:38:47

my kettle is a breville one which lights up when it's heating/boiling. it's fairly quiet too which is good.

however, living in a hard water area, i NEVER use tap water in the kettle. i've got a filter jug beside the sink and every drop that goes into the kettle is first filtered. ok, so you have to descale it eventually - about once a year usually.

i also use filtered water in my tassimo coffee machine - i think in the three/four years i've owned it, it's only been descaled once!

baNANAGran3 Sat 05-Mar-16 12:04:21

We've just bought a Russell Hobbs and didn't realise how noisy our very old one was until this was switched on. I especially like the blue light ring around the base which lights up when on - makes me smile in the morning as it's like a little space ship about to take off (easily amused)..

Liaise Sat 05-Mar-16 11:41:08

Mine is a dualit. The round type rather than the tall ones. I don't notice it boiling at all. Dh descales it regularly which helps. In fact I seem to be buying more Dualit products as time goes by. We have the dualit architect toaster which even dh doesn't get cross with. Also the small dualit food processor. They seem to be working well at the moment (touch wood). We have had some disasters in the past!

grandMattie Sat 05-Mar-16 11:37:45

I think you're right kili. We live in a dreadfully hard water area.

kiligran Sat 05-Mar-16 11:24:04

I have the same kettle as my daughter ( Russell Hobbs ) mine is quiet hers is so noisy! I think it has something to do with the quality of water and the build up of scale. I have very little and her kettle gets such a lot.

grandMattie Sat 05-Mar-16 10:17:51

Interesting thread. I am getting increasingly deaf and have tinnitus, so some sounds are very painful. My kettle is noisy, but impossible when it needs descaling but my washing machine is so quiet that we barely notice it.
