Kitchen worktop

My mother had a U shape kitchen and she kept it absolutely clear. Nothing was left out on it. She was very house proud. I'm just looking at mine and I see the electric kettle, jars of tea coffee and sugar, the bread bin, the toaster the biscuit tin,, a set of knives fitted into a stand, a jug with kitchen tools in it, (potato masher, ladle, slotted spoon etc) a small TV in the corner. Oh, and a chopping board.
Mum would have a fit. What's on your worktop right now?

Kettle, toaster, coffee jar, tea bags, coffee maker, coffee pods, 2 mugs filled with biros and pens, kitchen cutting board and a cooling casserole!

ninathenana Sat 14-May-16 13:23:00

Pretty much the same.
One side, kettle, coffee machine, tea, coffee, sugar jars and dish for wet teabags.
Other side. Pot stand, breadbin, breadboard, toaster, scales, utensil pot, covered pot for food waste, kitchen roll holder, timer in form of a ladybird and a currently empty fruit bowl.

On my worktop are the following:-
Canisters with tea, coffee and sugar
3 boxes of assorted green tea
toaster,
Kettle,
Knives in stand,
Halogen oven
Dolce Gusto coffee machine,
Microwave oven,
Weighing scale
Kitchen Ninja food processor.
Roll of kitchen paper.

Oh dear, what a lot. In my defence I use every one of them! ?

Far too much! (On mine that is) which I was houseproud......

Essentials which can't be put away - bread bin, bread board, toaster, coffee machine, compost bin, fruit bowl, sea monkeys, kitchen roll, dead tea bag tray
Things which should and will be put away - peanut butter, butter, bread knife, eggs, tomatoes, child's toothbrush and toothpaste, coffee, bunny's waistcoat, sunglasses, bills, phone charger, tea bags, spray cleaner, small paint scraper, opened packet of sunflower seeds.
Oh dear.

A kitchen is for using not for being a show home.

Our kitchen has a split personality. The modern fitted end has kettle, toaster, coffee machine, chopping board and utensil jar on the worktop.

Down in my 'what I call vintage/bootroom' end the pine worktop is cluttered up with fruit bowl(full of junk), microwave, radio, bread bin, tin of dog treats and wire basket for eggs.

Jalima Sat 14-May-16 15:23:28

Lots of the above essentials, plus post, papers, pens and pencils in a tub, steamer, breadmaker, specs (3 pairs?) etc etc etc
Oh dear
Tomorrow I am going to have a purge.

Nomorechickens Ah, the mantra of lazy people.

I used to tell my mum it's a kitchen, not an operating theatre. I like a house to be lived in, not a show house. That's my excuse!

Greyduster Sat 14-May-16 16:56:51

On my L shaped worktop:
A glass worktop saver
Coffee jar
Tea canister
Kettle
Toaster
A box of pastels (for drawing, not for eating!)
A food processor in the corner
A piece of frozen beef
A jelly DH is preparing for tomorrow
A bag of cookies that DH just brought back from the supermarket (they won't be around long!)
Three silicone pot stands
The charger for the iPad.

Strange as it may seem, despite all this "stuff" it doesn't seem all that cluttered ?!

Greyduster Sat 14-May-16 16:57:30

Oops! Forgot the kitchen roll holder!

aggie Sat 14-May-16 17:05:13

I tidied my coffee maker , food processor and bread maker away . When I went to make bread there was no room to put the machine down ! The " stuff " had multiplied and migrated sad

Kenwood Chef
Kenwood blender attachment
Sugar jar
Kettle
Microwave
Toaster
Three tier electric steamer
Bread maker (which I'm trying to sell)
Bag of kitchen waste for compost bin
Large box of washing powder, too big to fit in cupboard angry
Pasta jar
2 x Utensil holders (one for wooden spoons, the other for plastic, non-stick things)
Fruit bowl
Telephone
Pile of random paperwork tucked in behind fruit bowl
Small box containing GS's broken dinosaur puzzle which I've promised to glue.
GD's broken high chair toy, which I've also promised to glue.

My son is another one who likes to keep all surfaces clear. He even has a silver roll top cupboard with a plug point inside where the kettle lives. He just slides the roll top up halfway to use the kettle! Although he does now have a coffee machine on one worktop, because it is in constant use and wouldn't fit next to the kettle.

kittylester Sat 14-May-16 19:45:51

My kitchen also has a split personality.

On one run of work surface (sort of like a dresser

A bowl of fruit
a bowl of grapes
a bowl of lemons
lots of a few bottles of cooking alcohol
a cake plate
a radio
2 tablets

Run next to the cooker

Bread bin
Kenwood mixer
Kenwood liquidiser attachment
toaster
large utensil pot
olive oil
salt pig
salt and pepper grinders
spoon rest

between the cooker and the sink

kettle
coffee machine
tea, sugar, coffee containers
teabag container
tea pot
tea strainer
washing up liquid
hand wash
glass egg cup for holding rings etc
2 biscuit containers (one gf)
kitchen roll holder
dog door stop

Bet you hadn't realised I was a minimalist

We have the house up for sale so I've had to put a few things away but currently there is the kettle, halogen oven, tea/coffee canisters, tea bag holder, mug tree, coffee maker, toaster and bread bin, on the breakfast bar the tv, remote and a bowl of fruit. Tonight there is also the bed for one of my cats who likes to sleep there - this is obviously not there when viewing takes place or when preparing food! grin

GrandmaMoira Sat 14-May-16 21:26:45

I think most of you must have much bigger kitchens than I do as I just couldn't put out what some of you have.

Cherrytree59 Sat 14-May-16 22:13:50

DH mantra
'Clutter grows to meet the space available'

My kitchen is completely empty
Not even a sinkshock

On the other hand my conservatory and dining room are fit to burst!

We have the kitchen fitter in for over a week its slow progress ...

I don't suppose GN allows betting on the site
Otherwise I could have had a little sweepstake, as to how long my nice new work surfaces will look like the showroom version before...
The kettle and the toaster are reunited with life's junk necessitiesgrin

Jalima Sun 15-May-16 18:13:38

I had a good tidy up and clean of the work surfaces this morning; there is still quite a lot out but there is no room in the cupboards to put away the food processor, breadmaker, steamer etc etc grin
Perhaps I had better sort out the cupboards hmm

Grannyben Sun 15-May-16 19:00:00

My daughter has a completely clear worktop, as does her MIL. I think that's who she's got it from. Personally I think it doesn't look lived in. I can't stand clutter, particularly as I have a very small kitchen, but I have a matching bread bin, tea coffee and sugar cannisters and a kettle.

annodomini Sun 15-May-16 19:27:08

My ex-chef son manages to clear the worktops every evening. His brother, on the other hand, takes after me... Nuff said!

Jalima Sun 15-May-16 21:42:42

It would annoy me having to take out the kettle, toaster etc every time I had to use them.

suzied Sun 15-May-16 22:25:41

I like a clear worktop, mine is in white hanex, which is a sort of composite like corian, I have got a kettle and bread crock at one end and a fruit bowl at the other. I also usually have a vase of flowers somewhere but haven't any at the moment. I do have the toaster in a cupboard as we rarely use it and breadboard which we get out at lunchtimes.

Nannapat1 Mon 16-May-16 11:50:32

I do have a generous amount of work surface and would love to keep it less cluttered but...currently on display are
Kettle, toaster, microwave, slower cooker
Breadbin, coffee/tea/sugar jars, condiments on a carousel thing, weighing scales, knives in a stand, recipe books
Chopping boards in a holder...plus various sundry items that shouldn't be there....oh dear, does sound a lot shock
