New Carpets - who shifts the furniture?

I suggested to hubby, a new bedroom carpet, I said, we can move into other bedroom put the 4 chests in another bedroom and just leave bed in room. He says, we must empty the room completely to get a new carpet fitted. I say, so, if you are old, weak, in ill health, on your tod or disabled you can never have a new carpet fitted (as you wouldn't be able to empty the room) - really? (Btw...he is bonkers)

A lot depends on how much the store or whoever is doing the work wants the job. I do mention before we start that I cannot do too much but I am willing to help and find that whoever comes to do the work is usually really good and I have never come across a "Jobsworth". I had the carpets removed years ago from the 3 bedrooms and landing upstairs and laminate flooring laid. I did what I could and my bed was easily moved from one side of the room to the other.

We've never had any problems, we move what we can and the fitters work round it. Some do make a small charge

I used the local carpet shop in my village and they moved all the furniture laid the carpet and put the furniture back.

we usually move some bits ourselves, and pay for the fitters to move the rest.

We had new carpets fitted 6 weeks ago by a small company. We told them upfront that we would clear all the small stuff but Grampy can't move our horribly heavy 3 piece suite on his own.

It wasn't a problem the man helped and even helped bring back I the rest of the stuff.

Excellent customer service.

I agree even the elderly might need new carpets smile ...asking nicely works wonders.

I ve always moved everything from the room myself I think they can't lay a carpet correctly if there is furniture in the room so I don't think it's fair on them really

Just explain the situation. We always used to clear the room, can't move heavy stuff now and it has t been a problem. We do what we can, the fitters do the rest. Most suppliers are reasonable if they understand the situation.

Had the same problem when I had lounge recarpeted while DH was in daily post stroke therapy. I found that the chain carpet stores would only work on emptied rooms, finally a local carpet shop agreed to move furniture. Sadly they didn't tell the fitter who was a very small man and was daunted by our wall units. He then called out carpet store owner to help him.grin DH was VERY surprised when he was returned home from clinic as I had deliberately not told him my plans.

The firm offered to move the furniture for us and back again, but we would have to pay extra.
We managed to do it ourselves (with the help of DS luckily).
