New Car - would you be angry?

So, welcome to Gransnet, Estellea. I think you've seen us now in all our glory The good, the bad, the ugly plain speakers. The saints who exist only to help the less fortunate. Those for whom a car with four wheels and a floor is beyond the dreams of avarice. The Loadsamoneys who are considerably richer than yow and wouldn't be seen dead in a £20k runabout.

Please don't be put off after such a short acquaintance. It's remarkably similar to real life when you think about it. And surprisingly good fun when you get used to it

Dixxygran, you reminded me of my first car, a beat-out old Mini van, which also cost £50, I put over 100k miles on the clock driving to work, I did have to do a lot of walking and thumbing lifts as it broke down frequently. I always seemed to be servicing it, as you had to service every 3000 miles then, which was every 6 weeks. Thank goodness for modern cars.

I see I added a nought! - I still couldn't afford it, even without the nought!

I have only glanced at some of the responses - surely this is a wind-up - fancy having to collect a car from the forecourt rather than the showroom!! My car was new last year - it was on the forecourt when I arrived and it was raining slightly when the salesman went through all the functions (we sat in the car). I didn't give it a thought. My last car was purchased new and was undercover on the forecourt when I picked it up - I was given a lovely bunch of flowers on that occasion but nothing this time although the car was far more expensive. I know how lucky I am to be able to have my current car, especially when I think back to the time when I bought my first car for £50 - I loved it and kept it for three years before giving it to a friend. Sounds a bit precious to me to expect to collect a car from the showroom.

Saying it might be the last car is tempting fate, I said that three cars ago, after that is was like Henry VIII wives, knackered, beheaded, died, will this be the one that survives?

Mcem, you are right, it is only a car, not something I can get excited about, just a necessity.

On the contrary, we always find they are most welcoming and falling over themselves to be nice in the hope of another sale offering coffee etc etc

We may only have gone in for an MOT

As many garages don't have showrooms, you have to wait for a dry day if you want to inspect it.

When you buy a bunch of flowers from a shop i am sure you all of you would give them a quick look over to make sure they were fresh and undamaged, after all you wouldnt want to spend a fiver on crushed flowers SO why is it not ok to inspect a car you are just about to spend 20 grand on ?

The main agent I used only has room for three cars in it's show room, so it could be difficult to move an extra one in. If it was that much of an issue, wait until a dry day to collect it.

I think Estellea meant she wanted to inspect the car - look at the paintwork etc and make sure all was as it should be before it was handed over to her. I think this is reasonable for a £20k plus purchase.

For most people a car is the second most expensive purchase made - the first being a house. For others the most expensive purchase. It is a big event getting a new car and this car showroom have certainly fallen short on good customer service.

No doubt you will be asked to give customer service feedback then Estellea have your say.

Personally I dislike shopping for a new car, These places are so unwelcoming and quite often sexist and ageist.

And if we don't make a fuss like Estellea things will never improve.

Never mind, it was £20k a couple of weeks ago, it's only worth 1/2 of that now, so not so much to worry about if it gets wet. We bought a 3 month old car with 500 miles on the clock, it was £9k off the new price, and that was the forecourt price not what the seller got for it, he probably lost £15k.

The last time I bought a terribly expensive house it was left out in the rain when I moved in. No respect these estate agents.

Sorry I disagree. Marks and bumps can be missed in the rain. We bought our daughter a small car a few years ago and it was outside in the pouring rain on the forecourt. We did inspect it and it looked ok. Next day when it had dried off there was a small bump on the bonnet that was not visable when car was covered in blobs of rain.
