Light the way to the toilet

I like this

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-39194085

I know someone mentioned the toilet light before, but I was put off because of the extra cleaning. Now I feel we could do with this in so many instances. Last year we stayed with a hotel chain that has blue light pointing the way to the bathroom at night which didn't disturb your sleep by lighting the room too much. Seeing this report I am now thinking of buying some motion lights for the corners of the bed, often a very sore point!

We have a little landing from bedroom to bathroom, hardly enough to deserve the title of landing really, but anyway. I always leave the light on there, just a low wattage bulb, and bedroom door slightly ajar. Only since DH was diagnosed with his illness as he is disorientated( Is that right? or disoriented?), anyway he is prone to fall so that's why we do it.

Blinko, it's about those too as well as finding your way to it, the article that is.

I like the coaster idea, we have some stars that used to be in the children's bedrooms on the ceiling, might try those along the floor for now. I've tried keeping my eyes half shut but it's the bed corners that get me!

Our street lights used to annoyingly go off between 1am and 6am, but then the Council realised there were more house break ins in those dark hours, and people coming home with the last bus were uncomfortable in case they were mugged, etc, so now the lights are on again, saving everybody money and peace of mind. This is Sweden, a rather quiet part at that, but not free from crime obviously.

I never put the light on in the night, like others there is a street light nearby, we do have a little plug in light which is handy before going into the bathroom. I hate lights thet waken me up inthe middle of the night, I sometimes keep my eyes closed and drift off to sleep easily.
OH turns the spotlights in the bathroom on as soon as he opens the door, our bedroom is right opposite the bathroom, very handy, but not useful when its like Blackpool illuninations at 3 AM, why cant men sit down to do their business in the night, it wouldnt need lights to find the object in question!

I thought this thread was going to be about those toilet seats that light up in all different colours. Another thread, maybe.

We have outside light which lights toilet but I feel my way round in bedroom don't want to open my eyes

grannypiper Mon 13-Mar-17 16:54:11

I'm much better at this since removing my Exercise Bike from the bedroom. The only exercise it gave me was in briskly rubbing my elbow after walking into it in the dark! Ouch!

goldengirl Mon 13-Mar-17 14:44:43

I think it's a great idea especially when the GC come to stay.

Mine is like a searchlight Meriel! Blinding if you look directly at it shock

We have two motion sensor lamps, one in the bedroom and one on the way to the bathroom. My DH has been quite ill and although now recovering well has to get up 3/4 times each night. He finds these lamps very helpful and the light they give is not bright enough to wake me up now I have got used to them.

Anya Mon 13-Mar-17 14:22:54

I have a portable motion detector lamp. When I have guests I set it up on the landing outside the bathroom door. It's also helped my GS go to sleep in the dark as he knows if he wakes up and needs some light he just has to wriggle or wave a hand. It stays on for about 30 seconds after the movement ceases.

hildajenniJ Mon 13-Mar-17 13:55:18

My bathroom door is about three steps away from my bed. There is a street lamp outside on the road and the lady across the way has a motion detector outside light which is very bright and often comes on, as a lot of cats live round here. I never need to put the light on!

I do not open my eyes when going to the bathroom in the night. I just put my hand out and trail it along the less than 6 foot of wall to the bathroom: bedroom door, adjacent bedroom door, full length mirror, bathroom door and straight to the loo. We do not shut our bedroom door at night.

Away from home I have yet to find a hotel or house that doesn't have some external light that doesn't provide enough illumination. The one exception, our house in France, which really is pitch black at night. There we have an ensuite and anyway always leave the hall light on at night, which provides just enough light to orientate yourself.

We have drawers which could catch a knee on route to bathroom, I have a coaster-size luminous mat on the corner. Bought in Lakeland few years ago so don't know if they still have them. There are similar things available. Useful if no electricity socket near by.

JackyB Mon 13-Mar-17 11:36:02

I have my phone by my bed (the alarm is set for waking me up in the morning) and just switching it on gives enough light to find the way without switching a light on.

Misha14 Mon 13-Mar-17 11:28:39

I would love my streetlight to go off at 11pm. We live in a quiet street and the light is right outside our bedroom window. I have lined curtains and blackout material but still chinks of light come in, so I have to sleep with a sleep mask.

Smurf44 Mon 13-Mar-17 10:20:28

I have a street light immediately outside my gate which has worked wonderfully for the 30 years I have been here. Then the local council decided to economise by installing sensors on most of the street lights in October so they go off at around 11pm. From November 'my' streetlight with its new sensor began to play up and became unreliable. Then it stopped working completely in mid-January, as did the adjacent one 100 yards along the road! So now we have no street lighting in this part of my close-to-town-centre road and I really miss it when getting up in the night and even more so, when arriving home mid-evening after dark. It's really spooky out there with tall trees etc. The council have no intention of "mending" street lights until they have finished installing all those crazy sensors - i.e. Probably after April! I bet they don't suffer like this in Westminster! angry

Nothing worse than waking up in the night, needing the loo ( on the first night of a holiday) and wondering where the hell you are, and where the loo is!

rosesarered Mon 13-Mar-17 09:55:37

Grannypiper that's amusing.grin Did your neighbours request the new bulb without you actually laughing?

Juggernaut Mon 13-Mar-17 09:54:54

We've lived in this house for 33 years, so know the floor plan perfectly....therefore I never even open my eyes when finding the bathroom at night, it makes it very easy to get back to sleepwink
When going on holiday, we both take tiny torches with us, to prevent waking one another!

Dharmacat Mon 13-Mar-17 09:51:30

We each have a mini LED torch hanging on the drawer knobs of our bedside cabinets - easier to locate in the dark than on top of the cabinet. We live in a small rural French village and the street light outside the bathroom goes off at 11pm.

Mauriherb Mon 13-Mar-17 09:49:44

I've got a street light right outside but it is turned off at 1am. I use the little plug in lights that I used to used when the children were small

allule Mon 13-Mar-17 09:37:43

We have a combined safety/nightlight on the landing which is great. The nightlight part comes on as soon as it is dark, and it also charges itself to come on as a removable torch if there is a power cut. It's perfect...wish I could remember the name...I think it won an award on Dragon's Den or some such programme

MaryXYX Mon 13-Mar-17 09:33:44

My shower has a standby blue LED which is bright enough to light the bathroom during the night. Probably over engineered but very useful.
