Painting a ceiling. Vinyl silk or matt emulsion?

We have always used matt finish as silk shows every lump and bump in a finished wall/ceiling.

Apologies, error in second paragraph - should read two to three coats, not colours.

Merlotgran: yes I've done two rooms recently using Dulux satin finish white and am literally watching the paint dry on the third room ceiling, hence my being on here.

I've found it great for covering the dreadful light carmel-colour which was used here by previous owners. I need two to three colours on each room and the end result is worth the work.

However if you have an uneven ceiling you'd be best advised to stick with matt finish which, being non light reflective is better at hiding blemishes. Hope this helps.

Now back to putting on the next coat. Can't wait to do the walls.

I would go for matt, myself. Shiny tends to stay quite shiny on ceilings.

I'm re-decorating and was hoping to get away without having to paint the ceiling as it was only done two years ago but we live in a very dry and dusty part of East Anglia so although I thought it was OK, a quick wipe with 'magic sponge' showed me it's actually filthy shock

There is also a bit of smoke damage from the woodburner.

The whole place was originally decorated with Dulux Jasmine White which is a nice milky white but I'm wondering whether to switch from matt to silk finish.

I've never liked shiny finishes but I've just slapped some vinyl silk on a test patch and it doesn't look too bad.

Has anyone decorated a ceiling with silk finish and does it look shiny?
