I need advice on buying over 60 accomodation. I have noted most over 55 flats have extortionate service charges . I'm over 60 still working needing to buy a two bed flat . Any advice on good companies that can help I have a decent deposit.

Pazzo I can't help you with advice but I'm wondering why you don't just buy a property rather than one especially for over 55s? My husband and I bought a property when we were both in our early 60s (and working) and our ages weren't an issue.

I agree with Grannyk, I remortgaged in my sixties. I was still working. First though you need to check which banks lend to older borrowers, some have different age criteria. Good luck!

Many older people prefer to buy flats on the ground or first floor of ordinary blocks of flats. There are more of them, in a wider variety of locations and can be cheaper, not to mention being free from the extortionate charges levied on specialist accommodation, although these flats too will have maintenance charges.

I forgot to add, on what companies to use. First decide the area you want to live in then visit all the local estate agents.

Better still go to RightMove www.rightmove.co.uk/ and search the area you are interested in for the accommodation you require. It will usually list all the property of your chosen type in the area and you can then contact the agents dealing with the sale of any property that takes your fancy.

If you cannot afford to buy outright you may need to speak to a specialist mortgage broker dealing with mortgages for people close to or over retirement age to find a suitable mortgage

How about a maisonette rather than a flat - no service charges ? Unless you are looking for something in a community rather than an individual property .

I have just lost my post grr!
So I will just say that I have a family member who with her DH has lived in an over 55 apartment and loves it
Moved for health reasons.
Her family also like that their parents are now set up with future care packages on offer.
The service charges are high but include heating and 24/7 on call reception and laundry facilities.
They have a lovely restaurant, gym, hairdressers (envious no going out in all weather after you've had your hair done).
A film, games room with full sized snooker table.
Lovely gardens and seating area includinf a roof garden.
The DGS love to visit and play DGDad at snooker, also think its brilliant to go to restaurant for a plate of chips to take back to grandparent's flat..

According to 'them' their golden years are taken care of and feel that their family will now have a lot less concerns and worry.
