Are you houseproud?

Our sofas have legs that give access to underneath easily and we have wooden floors so it is easy to dust underneath with the long handled duster thingy its done about 2/3 times a week but I am not obsessive about housework I just like everything looking nice.
giulia I must confess to ironing my childrens socks when they where at school the reason being was I could not bare the thought of them at school all day wearing socks that
had an uncomfortable seam across their toes (how soft am I)

I used to be very fussy years ago. I ironed everything, and loved seeing a little pile of neat white vests and knickers ready to be put away. (Not mine, I hasten to add!) Grandson isn't so lucky these days. Crumpled up pyjamas for him, and I complain if he makes too much washing.

It used to be an ambition of mine, to be houseproud. I never achieved it and have (sensibly, I think) given up that ambition. I vacuum several times a week, mainly because we have 2 dogs, one of which seems to constantly moult white hairs. Thank heavens we don’t have carpets. I do admit or ironing tea towels, but I draw the line at socks. My mum used to though, I even remember her ironing her bras!

I also iron tea towels, because we usually buy one on holiday and I like to remind myself of the holiday.

My mother in law used to iron socks and I once saw her hovering the iron over a pair of tights as if thinking "shall I try and iron these?"

I vacuum every day as I have hard floors which show everything, three dogs and a cat keep me on the hop. Dust at least weekly as we have a wood burner which creates dust.
Hate ironing so no underwear or tea towels ironed here.

Well, as my leather settee took four burly removal men to carry it into my house, there is no way I can move it! So far, there is six years of dust underneath it! I find walking difficult (roll on new knees!) and my old vac was heavy so I bought a rechargeable, cordless one which is brilliant although I sometimes have to use it sitting down! I enjoy my retirement too much to stay in and do housework although I do clean my bathroom frequently - using antibacterial wipes as I am lazy as well! When I am in the house I prefer to crochet or do other crafts.

Christine that's what I should do - similar floors plus pets.
This morning I had a big cleanup in the bedroom, thinking my chest problems during the night might be due to dust and animal fluff. They've both been sleeping in our bedroom.
We'll see.

my cats play under the sofas, they like sliding round on the wood floor, so i guess they do the cleaning with their tails LOL

That is funny about your friend MissAdventure obviously I am not unique in 'hiding' stuff. I will just have to tell DH that all his stuff has gone because I had to do a 'bag job'. DH is the source of all heaps in our house. I took to piling them all up on his desk in the study but it didn't make him file things or put stuff away. Don't think there is a solution to it but I suppose I would rather have him and his heaps than not have him at all.

He suffers from 'piles' then? That drives me mad, piles of stuff waiting for a forever home somewhere. I do it myself. Some things don't fit into a category though.

Am I houseproud? - absolutely 100% NOT!! The house is there to serve me and my family and not me to serve it!

We have wide low window ledges and the GC slither about on them and clean them brilliantly with their trousers;they also make finger marks all over the windows though! - we treat those as GC signatures and take delight in them!

My Mother was exceedingly houseproud, liked everything 'just so' and rooms redecorated annually. The problem with that was that she did not see it as her job to maintain this state of perfection. Her contribution was to draw up rotas for my sister, father and I and refuse to let us out of the door for leisure activities until that days tasks had been completed.

My father called it 'pride and poverty' - an attempt to live a middle class life style without the means to hire a cleaner or send stuff to the laundry. So it was starched white linen tableclothes on the dining table in the living room with the full dinner service to be set out, used, washed and dried and put away again, table folded up and carpet hoovered after every evening meal. We were always late for the Youth Club and many 'dates' were 'stood-up' as we missed the bus.

Since I was married and had my own house, everything is arranged to need as little effort cleaningwise as is possible and as there are no longer any MIL or DM visits to prepare for I do no more than keep Kitchen, bathroom and toilet hygenic and to hell with the rest.

On days that they are with me, looks like we have been ransacked..

I leave DH to clean the hand and finger marks left by the little ones.

Clean kitchen and bathroom, reasonably tidy living room, wooden floors which need a vac every few days due to dog and cat fur, other than that, things get done on an as need basis. very little ironing done in this house, quick whiz in the tumble drier, then on to airer around tank, sorted!

No. I am now very very old and can't possibly be expected to much more than flick a feather duster around.

I can see quite a lot of dust on the tv stand. I think the fact it’s so close to a door that leads outside is why it gets so dusty. I imagine I could dust it daily. I do remember cleaning more often when my child was young. Now whenever I see something on the floor I get what I call my sucker upper a hand rechargable vacuum and make short work of it. My mother was always bending over and picking up something off the floor. She didn’t have my bad back though. As far as my mom she told me she ironed my diapers and I remember her ironing sheets but they got so wrinkled back then.

I like my house to look reasonable but as for moving furniture every week - no way. I've been saying I must pull out the bed and hoover underneath it for about six months. There's always tomorrow.

My house is clean enough to be safe and healthy, cluttered enough to be a home ?

I aim to move the double bed once a year to hoover under it and try to do the same with bookcases but I am quite a slob!

That's exactly right Sennelier1! Whenever I feel a decluttering bug coming on I'll remember your wise words. And go have a lie-down until the feeling passes .
