Dual-fuel cookers

About to replace my gas cooker and thinking of getting one of these dual-fuel types (after much trial and error I gather they are so called) - electric oven and gas hob. Seem to me to combine the best elements of both, but am I missing something? Are there snags I haven’t thought about? Any advice much appreciated.

Well, the experts say that a gas hob and electric oven is the ideal cooker, but I would love to be on mains gas, if I was I’d have a gas cooker. Gas hob and a hi level gas oven like I had about 25 years ago!

Gas hob plus electric (preferably double) oven.
There was a similar thread recently which might be useful. Will try to find it.

I prefer the dual fuel to a gas cooker particularly if you bake. I quite like an electric cooker too. I had one with a ceramic hob for twenty years - left it in a house when we moved- it was a lovely cooker and easy to clean.

I had a gas hob, electric oven range cooker. I loved it. In my new house there is an induction hob and 3 electric ovens! ( don’t ask! )
However, I love them as well.

Oh dear j52 you just know that someone is Going to ask don’t you? I hope you have 3 ovens because you have 3 lovely men in your family who all love to cook and bake, whilst you sit and read a book with a glass of something in your hand.......

I love my dual fuel cooker, it has two ovens which is really helpful. The smaller one has the grill in it but that’s not a problem. I hardly ever use the big oven unless the family appear! It is a Hotpoint Ultima which I bought from Boots on line.

I’m intrigued too. j52. Yes, three chefs in the household would be good smile.

We have a Rangemaster dual fuel cooker, cannot fault it, 2 ovens (1 big and 1 half size (slim)). Best oven, hob I have had, and I have tried, electric hobs, ceramic hobs cannot beat a gas hob in my opinion. Also has a large burner for wok or can be used for over large saucepans, together with a griddle which is removable. Everything removeable goes in the dishwasher.

I have a Rangemaster dual fuel cooker and regret buying it. The failings of Rangemasters were aired on another thread so I will keep to the OP.

I have a dual fuel cooker and would much prefer a gas only cooker. The grill is more controllable, gas grills heat quickly and cool quickly once turned off. Electric grills are slow to heat and slow to cool.

The oven is fan assisted so you do not get the gradient of heat in the oven you normally get so I often have to use two ovens, each at a different temperature to cook a meal. No joints with the Yorkshires at the top of the oven and the joint cooking at a lower temperature further down.

Oopsadaisy53 have you thought about calorgas? I've used a dual fuel oven for the last 16 years, wherever we've lived it was always out in the sticks and no mains gas. I bought a smeg dual cooker when I came back to the uk and it's proved to be the best of 3 I've cooked on. As I'm on my own now mine is a one oven and grill on electric and burners on calor gas. Perfect control. I only change a bottle every 3 months so it's an easy solution.

Sadly our cooker isn’t near an outside wall where we can put the gas bottles.

Our gas hob is some distance from the outside wall, so gas is piped across house to kitchen and it has never been a problem. We are on LPG as we live in very rural area.
The real benefit of the dual fuel is when there is a power cut, I can still cook I just have to ensure we have a box of matches around as the auto ignition does not work without electric.

I agree with M0nica about electric grills but have an electric oven that is multifunctional. I can turn off the fan and get the heat gradient for cooking roast meat and yorkshire puds in the same oven. I can also select top heat (to brown toppings) and bottom heat (for pizzas and flans/quiches). My oven also has a pyrolitic cleaning facility - just wipe away the remaing fine, grey dust at the end of the cleaning cycle.

I have a gas hob which I would not change either but wish I also had a gas grill. It's a compromise.

I miss my "beast" – left in London when I moved. It had five gas hobs, which, of course, can change from high to low or vice versa instantly, a wok hob and an an electric hotplate, an electric fan oven, a conventional electric oven and an electric grill. I now rent a house with a tiny kitchen and tiny electric cooker.

I gave a Rangemaster dual fuel cooker like grannygravy, I think. My tall oven is electric with a fan but the rest is gas including the hob. It is so versatile.

Just caught up with the post. Yes all 3 males in the family are excellent cooks. DSs now cook for their lovely wives!
The ovens were in the house when we bought it, they are digital and to a variety of things. Most of which we don’t use.

‘do’ . I miss my Rangemaster.
