Sheltered accommodation

I live in sheltered accommodation, which is a self contained flat and is independent living. When I.moved in I was told I can come and go as I pleased as long as no one else stayed there. I have a casual job homesitting and I can be away from home 1 or 2 weeks at a time. Another resident has told me that I can be evicted if I'm away for too long. She said it happened to a previous tenant. I have been pretty busy and have had work every month since April. If you can call it work sitting in some very nice houses. Has anyone heard of this rule?

I have worked in sheltered housing schemes and never heard of this rule.Having said that things within housing have changed dramatically. Might be an idea to check it out.I would have thought that as long as your rent is paid on time and you inform the scheme manager if you have one that you are away why would it be a problem.

I would think the evicted tenant was not doing the odd temporary stays away that you are doing, but actually spending, months at a time, for example, staying with a daughter or having a holiday home he disappeared to for months on end.

With what you do, there is no question that the sheltered accommodation is not your main home.

Have you asked exactly what he was doing and how long he was away at any given time when he was evicted? If you did it would probably reassure you.

florence I would imagine there is more to it than the other person simply being away from home, your neighbour may not have all the information. If your home is rented why not get the CAB or Age UK to check out your tenancy agreement. It would put your mind at rest. You can’t be the only person who stays away from their home for very valid reasons.

Our HA has it in our lease that if we are away from home for more than 1 month without informing them they will seek to reclaim the property(ie. eviction). Things like hospital stays, family visits etc of more than 4 weeks have to be notified to them. I can see their point as there are so many people on the waiting lists.
We had one neighbour who used to spend 3 months at a time with her sister in Florida, so her flat (adapted for disabled living) was empty for half the year. She was warned but eventually evicted.

I worked for HA’s for 24 years and have never heard of this. As long as you tell them you’re going away and your rent is paid there’s no problem.

I should have a re-read of your tenancy agreement and a chat with the housing manager.
