Do I need to see someone! confused

I have always liked boxes (square, rectangle, oblong never round) When going round d.i.y stored dh would always know where to find me round the tool boxes storage boxes etc and I always had to look inside them!

Just lately I have bought more! storage boxes (doesn't help when Home Bargain have been selling them at a £1 complete with lid)

I have a stash of them now but nothing in them, when I'm out I think " Oh that will do for such n such a thing" but somehow the "thing" never lands up in the box.

I used to sell bits n bobs on ebay so used to save empty cardboard boxes. I'm wondering if there is a reason for me collecting empty boxes!
Could I be lacking a vitamin lol.

My house is quite tidy smile I'm not a hoarder.

Anyone else collect things but then not use them?

I have a tower of boxes in our cellar containing dressing-up clothes (we love a good theme party round here!). All labelled - children’s outfits, period dresses, accessories, Hallowe’en, pirates, etc. I hadn’t realised it was a bit odd till DD1 took a photo and posted it on Facebook. blush

We are decluttering here and boxing things up ready for moving hopefully in the summer. So boxes are handy especially for posting things we're selling on eBay.

Yes another box collector here. My family laugh at me but guess who they come to when they need a box? Thinking about it I have upended shoe boxes on shelves and in cupboards keeping CDs, DVDs and books tidy. Children's crayons, pencils felt tips etc in another shoe box with lid Colouring, puzzle and drawing books in a cardboard box under an occasional table. Wardrobe shelves and drawers have socks, scarves, tights, knickers etc neatly kept together in a variety of cardboard boxes. Oh yes shoes and trainers in the bottom of the wardrobe also in boxes. Ice cream boxes are used for lunches, keeping buns and biscuits in and also water colour blocks and paint brushes. Sewing stuff , buttons, zips, cotton reels also kept in old sweetie tins.

I have also found the perfect place for hiding sweets and chocolates ... a big 'Roses' tin. No one ever expects actual goodies in a sweetie tin!!!! grin

I go to shoe shops & ask for their unwanted empty shoe boxes
They are so useful especially the ones with hinged lids & they’re free !

OMG now I have visions of houses stacked to the rafters with pretty labelled boxes grin

Me too ?!!!

bikergran Sun 03-Feb-19 19:17:16

Do you also LABEL things...we used to laugh at my mum as she would label everything (she still does at 84)

But then when I reached about 55 I also started Labelling things boxes etc I used them stick labels on a roll.hmm

Wow! after reading the post I feel quite ! "normal" lol

I do have a solution for the cardboard boxes (bright idea)

If you "Flatten" them smile they will not be as bulky, you can hide them under beds/sofas, slide them anywhere really, then resurrect them when needed smile

I am a sentimental old fool so lots of things are precious to me. I still have all the letters my mother and father wrote to me when I was a student, far away from home. They are precious to me.
I find it hard to throw away beautiful packaging, but I do. There is nowhere to store it. I keep the odd padded envelope or cardboard box and then use them at Christmas and birthdays to pack oddly shaped presents.
I have a carrier bag full of carrier bags in the utility room - and often find myself without a bag hen I go supermarket shopping, so have to buy new ones!
I am tempted by stationery and pens, In packing up my old house I brought so many pens with me, found in various rooms and drawers. I do try to organise things and have drawers and boxes for my paper and art stuff.
I have just been unpacking stuff brought with us from our house move (a few years ago) and found a few sets of IKEA flat pack boxes in green. I have just the use for them! It was a good find. Yes bikergran - I felt quite excited by their discovery!

My MIL used to have a thing about bagging things up with many do-ups! She'd use layers of bags each with their own do-up and as she got older she used more and more bags. I was walking through Homebase the other day looking at storage boxes when my husband remarked that I was turning into his mother but with storage boxes rather than bags. I resemble that remark!

I am so glad my dad's mom kept things for sewing. I have her button tin that came with a Christmas fruitcake. She kept all buttons off what became rags. She also had the buttons from DGF WWI uniforms. Yesterday I found a good big button to replace the broken one on my jacket. She taught me to sew when I was 5. I'm the one keeping leftover cloth now. Glad I do, because I made a quilt for each of my GC tenth birthdays.

Boxes do come in handy and I must admit to owning about a dozen, some of which are quite pretty. They contain paperwork and suchlike.
Being a bit of a 'pot maniac' I have about 25 mugs/cups and saucers in the kitchen cupboard but I only use my favourites on a regular basis. If I see any pretty ones in a shop I really have to drag myself away reluctantly as I want it. It's almost an addiction - there, I've confessed.

I only keep boxes when I can see a use for them. Otherwise, once the product is out of the box or used up, the box goes into the green bin for recycling.

Happysexagenarian Sun 03-Feb-19 15:27:52

Two years ago I was refused a refund for a very expensive item because I had not returned it in the original packaging, so now I keep those boxes until the warranty expires. I also keep good strong delivery boxes and bubble wrap as they're handy for sending gifts to GC etc. My son was once about to throw out a nice looking Ted Baker box when I discovered it had a musical movement in it, so I kept it and made it into a jewellery box. As boxes can be fitted inside each other my 'collection' doesn't take up too much space, but every now and then DH tries to smuggle a few out for recycling. I too have three crates of greetings cards in the loft which I can't bring myself to discard. Some are from family and friends no longer with us and it's lovely just to see their messages and handwriting again. My mother was a hoarder, and yes it was time consuming clearing her home when she died. But it was also an insight into elements of her life I knew nothing about, and I kept a few things she would not have wanted destroyed. Our children will probably do the same when we are gone.

Nandalot Sun 03-Feb-19 13:54:37

Our loft is full of boxes kept in case the electrical item had to be returned. 0ver 35 years in this house that is a lot of boxes. This year our resolution is every time DH goes in the loft one box comes out.

Jalima1108 Sun 03-Feb-19 13:29:09

I collect boxes and DH throws them out.

If I need a box to post a parcel I look everywhere, saying 'I'm sure I saved a very light box just the size I need', then realise he's thrown them out. He keeps trying to throw out my jars too.
And my tins.

P3terpan Sun 03-Feb-19 13:23:11

Have a look at Marie Kondo on Netflix or you tube. You’ll find so many uses for your boxes my cupboards and drawers have never been so tidy (I’m a bit horder too)

chrissyh Sun 03-Feb-19 13:14:12

I don't buy boxes but I do keep them to use for putting Christmas presents in. My family love that they never know what they've got as every present is in a box. Even vouchers. It has started to rub off on the rest of the family. Makes present opening more exciting.

gilld69 Sun 03-Feb-19 12:49:36

i am sat here right now looking at my wardrobe thinking i will buy some boxes to sort stuff out, last weekend it was my kitchen, there is just something about boxes haha, glad im not alone.

Fennel Sun 03-Feb-19 12:47:28

My husband is a collector - boxes, padded envelopes, screw top jars +++ It annoys me because we haven't much storage space.
Sometimes when he's out (not often) I sneak a few and go out for a walk and put them in different bins.
If he knew he would blow his top!

I've got an ancient six-sided Marshall & Snelgrove hatbox, in which I keep my wedding hat. I am a sucker for little wooden boxes which then clutter up surfaces but they do bring back memories of where I bought them.
