It looks so wrong!!

Oh dear. It is the early hours of the morning. I have work tomorrow and I can't sleep. I am just sitting here, looking at it, and it is just wrong!! Yesterday we had a new fireplace and fire fitted in the living room. The first step in a total major overhaul of our living room. The first in over 30 years of living here. The first fireplace we chose was lovely but hugely expensive so in a way I was relieved when, after a genuine misunderstanding on both sides ,not only was it not delivered and fitted on the expected date but hadn't even been ordered. I had a good excuse to not go ahead with it, but could go to another shop and buy one that was in stock and could be delivered within days. And was a more reasonable price. In the shop it looked lovely, but now it is here, it is so wrong. What looked white, now looks a cold, bluey grey white. The built in units which are coming next week are a warm off white, the carpet and suite (delivered in two weeks) are cream and the curtains (being made right now) are green with pink and cream in them. We really chose the fireplace in a rush and the lighting in the showroom must have made it look warmer than it does. Unless we win the lottery we can do nothing about it. My DH hasn't even realised how awful it will look when everything else is in place. I know I will literally just have to live with it, but I had looked forward so much to my lovely new room. Nothing anyone can do, but I just wanted to sound off. Sorry.

I think I'll change my cushions

I once had a new (expensive) lounge carpet fitted - and absolutely hated it. The colour, a blue-green, looked much darker at home than in the shop. Well, of course it would, as the shop had bright lighting.

After a month of hating it, I had it taken up and relaid in my daughter's south-facing bedroom - where it looked very nice indeed!

I am so glad to know that I am not alone! Everyone else's homes always look so "right" that it is nice to know that other people make mistakes too. The fire we have chosen to go with the surround is electric. We have always had gas before. It was my DH who really liked it. Not sure why as we hadn't gone to look for an electric one , but he seemed really keen and, as it was in stock, I was happy to go along with it. To be honest I thought it looked a bit naff and plasticky. Today the electrician has been here all day. He put sockets behind the fire so we can use it. I must admit it looks ok now it is on, but it is so noisy!!! I would never have agreed to it had I realised! He also put up the new light fitting which neither DH or I like now it is up and it gives out very little light! I wonder if Laura Ashley will take it back once it has been up? The decorator is due tomorrow. Suddenly I am dreading it! The chances that we will like the paint we have chosen when it is on, seem increasingly remote!! I will keep you posted.

I love your new sofas Maw B. The room looks great, in my opinion far better than it did before.

Oh my sister got caught out with the noisy electric fire. They don’t have the fan on in the showrooms, so you don’t realise. In the end she just never had it on. ?

Dont worry it's not only you who picks the wrong fireplace. Like you mine looked lovely in showroom but a different colour at home, I even went back to check it was the same surround. It's been in five years and it hasn't grown on me but as my daughter said 'dont sweat the small stuff' and shes right.

Decorator didn't come. When we got in touch to check that he was ok (a nice way of saying "where the hell were you "!). It turns out he knew he was coming on 8th, but thought 8th was Monday!! Also, did you know that not all modern bulbs can be used with old dimmer switches? Neither did we. The lights flicker!! Wine time!!!!?????????????

Know just how you feel I have ideas in my head but putting it together is such hard work.Retailers are partly to blame they have seasonal fashion colours an if you want other than those No chance !!! If I see any more mustard coloured furnishings I will scream, its not I dont like it but already done dining room assesories etc.I also appear to drift straight to blue spectrum have to stop myself as house would be same throughout. Also the young appear to change decor so frequently ours is only because of need.Sounding really old n grumpy now, sorry.
