It might be called a "mobile phone so you can always take it with you Whiff, but have you noticed the number of people who also insist on being "mobile" when they are talking? I used to notice in London they were always walking as they spoke or whizzing round the shops!

Grammaretto Thu 19-Mar-20 11:54:43

I try always to wear clothes with pockets big enogh for the phone. I have dropped a previous phone into the loo so know about the need for deep pockets - pref with a zip.

Ellianne Thu 19-Mar-20 11:38:31

Dear Whiff, please look after yourself and call on your lovely children if you need them. They must be so pleased to have you close by.

craftyone Thu 19-Mar-20 10:22:03

How do you manage to carry a mobile phone if you don`t have pockets? serious question btw

I was just thinking how very grateful I am to have moved and settled into a house that has enough space for me to move around and that is insulated and cosy and with an enclosed garden, so I can go out and potter. I really am thankful. It is making isolation a whole lot easier.

Whiff Thu 19-Mar-20 10:14:42

Have to read what I write my children made me carry phone. Missed children bit.

Whiff Thu 19-Mar-20 10:13:08

Shandy57 always carry my phone even to the loo. When I had the first lot of out of control seizures they made me do it. Also pointed out if I fell on the drive I live on a quiet road and it could be hours before anyone helped me. Also pointed out that's why it's called a mobile phone no point in leaving it in one place. Sorry about the curtain. With your daughter coming home extra pair of hands to help you sort things out.

Grammaretto Thu 19-Mar-20 09:59:10

I popped into the PO this morning to post a parcel to France. They took it but said who knows how long it will take with the borders closed. Surely even during the war, post got through?

My DS phoned from NZ. What doom and gloom he is!
I think it may be the fact that it was night time after a depressing day, when his office has finally closed, and also they are going into Autumn there. The Spring does have an upbeat effect on our mood.
I had to be the comforting parent.

I hope your DD doesn't run out of food Franbern and that DGC gets better very soon.

That surveyor is a liability Shandy how dare he start dismantling the house!!

I agree that those who managed to move when they did will be so relieved now. I am just pleased the roof was repaired!

craftyone Thu 19-Mar-20 09:38:24

whiff I am sad to hear of your troubles but glad you had those anti-seizure tablets. Try not to worry about AC and GC, they will learn through all this and believe me they will cope

I have the ring on the bell earlier, very kind, handed me a paper with bare hands while leaning forward, then says that parents cannot mind her toddler today as mother has a temperature. arghh some people have no brains. She should not be leaving her child with parents my age. They have health conditions too. They live very close by here.Needless to say that I did the full washing procedure as soon as she had gone, must disinfect the door handle, not sure I did it

Yesterday I read that diarrhea has been a first symptom in some

Shandy57 Thu 19-Mar-20 09:30:14

Big hugs Whiff, so sorry you are going through this, I am very glad the paramedics were able to come and help you. I hope the tablets give you some relief and you have a peaceful week. Do carry your phone with you at all times, I always mean to but don't. I am glad your daughter got you some loo roll and soap, it is marvellous you moved in time to be near them in this crisis. Stay warm and well xx

I am sorry your grandson is poorly Franbern - I looked at the Immodium on the shelves yesterday and considered buying some, my husband always liked to have some in the house. I hope your grandson gets well soon. As London is more advanced I wonder if it will be locked down - on facebook someone posted that 20,000 troops had been put on alert? I hope all of your family stay safe.

I have a runny nose, but no fever, think it's just a cold. I haven't heard from my daughter yet.

My 'new' number telephone rang this morning. Guess who - Amazon Prime scam.

I find it hard to face but will have to go up to the house and start sorting everything out now, it's the perfect time to do it. None of my large furniture is selling on ebay, nearly the end of the second week of advertising. I am very glad to have a garage here so I can store the items ready for charity shops - I wonder when they will starting accepting donations again. I saw my neighbour this morning, he said he'll give me his telephone number, such a nice young couple.

The surveyor was still at the house yesterday at 4.30 pm when I drove past. I went up at 6 pm to lock up and he had left a note apologising - he'd pulled the hall door curtain rail down and couldn't get it back up again. As I'm not there now I'm just removing it, no more curtains for me!

Whiff Thu 19-Mar-20 08:43:49

Franbern we crossed posts. As usual you are the voice of reason. Thank you for that. Hope your daughter and granddaughter in London will be ok.

Whiff Thu 19-Mar-20 08:40:25

Oopsyadaisy3 and Grammaretto thank you. Both my children had to grow up quicker than their peers because of my health problems and their dad dying when they were 16 and 20. I know they weren't little children but still to young . I am very proud of the people they are and there wonderful families. In times like this family support is very important. Always thought we relied to much on technology but know realise it is going to be a life line for many people. Either working or just keeping in touch with family and friends.

Keep safe everyone and not doubt will all fine jobs to do in our homes and if it stops raining in the gardens.

Franbern Thu 19-Mar-20 08:35:16

There does seem to be a tummy upset (lasting for about 48 hours) that is running around children at present. Could be/probably is just a normal early spring bug, or it could be part of of CV19. As there is no proper wide-spread testing going on - no-one knows. This is being so mis-managed by our wonderful leaders.
Spoke to my daughter in London yesterday evening - She is a key worker - (but her daughter at 16 yrs old will not be included in those still attending school). My daughter always works very many more hours each day/week than she is supposed to, now she is hardly away from her job as all her teams are so desperately short of members working. She also told me last night, that a rumour had swept around that London would be locked down, and all food shops and supermarkets have had ALL their shelves totally cleared. she does have some food at home, but is now concerned as to if she is going to get anything at all.
Whiff - do take care and it is good to hear that the Paradmedics did come and look after you. I have been wondering how usual serious health problems are being dealt with at present.
Can I please make an appeal that if any of you are still in contact with young g.children, that you talk to them and encourage them to talk to you and their parents. This is a terrifying time for these children and many of them are holding in their fears and concerns. Be positive - we are NOT ALL GOING TO DIE. The world will return to nearly normal before the end of this year - just that it will feel a long time, and for children - that time will feel even longer.

Grammaretto Thu 19-Mar-20 07:42:28

Dear Whiff . When I said I wanted to hear about your adventures, I didn't mean that extreme. wink
How alarming for you and painful, by the sounds of it.
Now you are already worrying about the young ones. No wonder you have high BP!!

In a situation like yours when you can't help, you should be pragmatic and remember that the younger generation will cope because you brought them up and they are sensible.
Now is the time to rest up and look after yourself.

DS3 is on urgent delivery duties with his work. His DW is not being allowed to work from home (wfh). She is NHS. They are uncertain if the DC will be in the category who will continue at school. Interesting times.

I suppose I will need to clean my own house. I am running out of excuses.

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 19-Mar-20 07:34:11

Oh Whiff I’m so sorry you’ve had such a rough time, we forget don’t we that our usual health problems are still there and we need to care for ourselves even more at the moment, I hope you have a better day today.

Whiff Thu 19-Mar-20 06:58:25

Not son's but son only got one.

Whiff Thu 19-Mar-20 06:55:29

Just had a great read at what every has been up to . My day yesterday didn't go as planned. Yesterday morning my heart decided to do a weird fluttering and my BP and pulse sky rocketed. Phoned my GP for advice. Had to get paramedics. They were wonderful and checked me out . They even spoke to my GP who was going to call me at lunch time. Decided I was ok to stay at home. Tried to get hold of my daughter and then spoke to my son. Whilst talking to him it happened and again and I started seizuring. He phoned his sister while I phoned 999 . She arrived just before paramedics. Full on seizures. They checked me out and did ECG. They were with us for over hour. Decided it was best I stay at home as I was going to speak to GP and already under 2 consultants and already got tests booked. Both crews were lovely and didn't make me feel like I was wasting their time. My daughter asked how busy A&E was incase she had to take me. As you can guess very quiet. My GP has presecripted the anti seizure tablets the neurologist wanted me on. Started them last night. Won't be doing much today in a lot of pain and exhausted. I am not going anywhere until next Friday for the bubble echo if it's not cancelled. My daughter is taking me be told her she is not to come into the hospital with me.

My oldest grandson has had an upset tummy since Monday and started with high fever on the night. It went on Tuesday but the fever was back yesterday on advice of their GP they whole family is in isolation for 2 weeks. My son's work not happy but if they sack him he says he can easily get another job as HGV are always needed. The GP doesn't know if the diarrhoea caused the fever or the other way round. Family comes first .

My son in law has been working from home since Monday so when my daughter and grandson were here yesterday he came and fetched him and took him to his parents so he could work. Everyone is now on alert as my son's and grandsons spent hours with me on Saturday.

I said to both of the they would roux the day I came to live by them. Both are glad I did saves the mad dash down the motorway for hours to get to me. So glad I live in the bungalow couldn't manage stairs when I am like this. Hopefully these new tablets will help. On the lowest dose for a week then next week need to up it to double the dose. Still be a very low dose. Then need to see GP . Will book an appointment today for then. Also need to let my neurologist's secretary know had another episode of out of control seizures as instructed last time I saw him.
My daughter managed to get me some loo rolls and soap.

Well hope everyone else is safe and has plenty to do if staying at home. Hopefully the weather will stop raining a least then can get into the garden. Take care everyone.

craftyone Wed 18-Mar-20 21:19:40

dentists and doctors are not on the list of essential workers. People are not going to cope and some will not bother, cities are likely to have packs of feral children roaming around and getting into mischief. Could be until autumn

Shandy57 Wed 18-Mar-20 20:03:22

The news of schools closing on Friday has sent a shiver down my spine, how on earth are people going to cope.

I was left alone at home in the early 1960's with strict instructions not to answer the front door, but today's society is so very different.

Ellianne Wed 18-Mar-20 17:19:31

Silly me! Of course - shows how much attention I pay!

MerylStreep Wed 18-Mar-20 16:21:33

Ellianne
Rachel took over from Carol Vordamon. Susie is still there.

Grammaretto Wed 18-Mar-20 16:06:18

Ellianne

What happened to Carol Vorderman? I think she was the one when I last watched grin

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 18-Mar-20 16:00:37

Craftyone in normal times Charity shops would love to have your bubble wrap, we were always trying to wrap delicate items up, usually in newspaper or old carrier bags. I wonder if they are still taking it?
You put me to shame, so busy. I’ve tidied a drawer done some paperwork and walked the dog twice!
We have a poly tunnel arriving next week, we need to erect it then get planting....
Tried to get some seeds online yesterday , but due to staff shortages they won’t open the ‘baskets’ up until Saturday, then it’s first come first served, then they will close the lines down again until those orders have been fulfilled.

This current situation is affecting so many different areas of our lives that we really have taken for granted .

craftyone Wed 18-Mar-20 15:52:01

a good plan for the day, yes it is key to survival, to have something to look forward to, even if sorting a drawer. Its how I survived for quite a long time after husband died. I am glad to hear that you have been out Franbern, it released some cobwebs

Shandy just one week, one long week and that evening it will all be over, I am convinced you will sell. Lockdown coming to london in days, you have an empty property and that must be very appealing to a big family

More story another day, I am shattered but in a very good way. Outside the whole day, hoisting, sowing, shifting and then the wood came the 1.2 x 1.2 m 12mm marine ply that I need for the back of my lean to greenhouse, silly me never appreciated that the greenhouse does not have a back. I have a suitable place by a fence but it has a large post right down the space, so I have had to saw wood and pad it all and then make a panel 1m x 1.03 m, I made sure to measure twice and cut once. Then I waterproofed the inside face because I will never take it off . I am waiting for long screws and washers to make spacers and the greenhouse will arrive in a week and needs to be fixed to the wall and concrete slabs below. Youtube again `how to drill concrete` My jigsaw is my very useful buy, I am hopeless with a saw but jigsaw is good, slightly wavy edges on the wood but who cares

Oh masses of bubble wrap to dispose of and no more tip runs, happy stomping, seemed to go on forever popping bubbles, good exercise. I heard my neighbour next door, he must have heard hundreds of pops and me jumping up and down, we have the garage between us, I`ll get the binned bubble wrap out later and stomp that, the bin is already half full and I have 13 days to go with lots of empty compost bags to go in

I heard someone say to my neighbour that she was going around everyone offering to get things. Lovely people but no need for me, although I would not have said that. I will cycle out to get milk, gloves on, tap card and back home. Try and stay upbeat if you can about you know what, doom and gloom is infectious.

Ellianne Wed 18-Mar-20 15:26:38

Good to hear you got out Franbern. Oh yes, I remember now Jill Dando was from Weston. I used to walk past her Hammersmith house very often, near Charing Cross Hospital. They never found anyone did they? Her fiancé is now the Queen's gynaecologist, I think he was at the birth of George, Charlotte, Louis.

Franbern Wed 18-Mar-20 15:20:21

Enjoyable trundle round Grove Park. Sat a while in Jill Dando's garden. Have found people much more chatty when out than previously, Man in another scooter, stopped as we passed and we had a little chat. Phone my Sister in Law - she said I must have been psychic, as she was just about to ring me.
Do hope the 5 pm news item will include school closures, although it will be important to include some sort of child care for those whose parents are in any of the emergency service.
Feel so much better in myself now - realise how important it is going to be to ensure I still have a good plan for each day of something to do/achieve, and also to get out of door each day When it is a bit warmer, will trundle along the Promenade.
Shandy, fingers, toes, and everything else crossed re. that survey - only another week to go now.
