Are you doing less housework ?

I dislike housework, and now that we are allowed no visitors, I'm getting a bit lazy about how my house is looking. I do tidy up, but dust is gathering and I'm thinking, let it stay there a bit longer. And although I do like ironing, it's just the collar and front of DH's shirts that get done, and a quick up and down on the front of the trouser legs. (But I am about to wash the kitchen floor as DH is doing more cooking, bless him, but he is a bit messy.)

I do as little as possible at the best of times, so now am doing even less. Obviously I clean the bathroom and kitchen but as there’s only me, I’m becoming quite used to living in my own muddle. I like to be in the garden making the most of the glorious weather. If we return to winter I’ll turn my attention to a spot of spring cleaning! I have an emergency plumber coming this week to fix the non-flushing loo so will have sanitiser/gloves/bleach etc at the ready.

My household consists of mysnd 15 year old grandson but currently have 2 young grandchildren as well (both parents key workers, in shifts, so little choice) kitchen gets a clean, living room carpet gets hoovered but that's it.!

I’ve got more time. But going at a slower pace if something doesn’t get done I’ll think’ oh I’ll do it tomorrow “ no hidden agendas now. God knows what I’ll be like returning to work!

PS.Couldn’t wipe down with antibacterial wipes, neverbeenableto get any, usebleachandZoflora occasionally

I really don't feel like cleaning today, so I won't, confident in the knowledge it will all still be there tomorrow

Granof412 Sun 12-Apr-20 13:38:13

I’m amazed how many gransnetters have cleaners!?!

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 12-Apr-20 13:42:29

Hi All: my first post! Boredom/time on hands has.led me to those jobs I was going to get around to someday. .
So, I find that what I took to be "patina" on the garden bench was, in fact, dirt ....Shame on me.

Please can someone explain what you call a steam cleaner ? Do you clean floors with it ? I think I’ve got one LOL ? A good idea that never came out the cupboard .

Willow500 Sun 12-Apr-20 13:46:12

I'd already cleared out wardrobes and kitchen cupboards before the lockdown and in the first week did seem to be more industrious - I even washed the car! However the last few days I can't be bothered to do much more than run the hoover road. I did clean my kitchen cupboard doors with waterless car cleaner this morning though having seen someone doing it on the net! shock

Because of mobility problems I cannot do housework so my home help still comes in to do the heavy stuff. We keep to separate rooms whilst she is here and when she has gone I wipe all the door handles etc.
I wipe everything delivered by Sainsburys before putting away and wash hands after handling mail.
Was amused yesterday that my automatically renewed bus pass came. Haven’t been able to use a bus for years and this new one is valid until 2024 when I could be 101

I was cleaning in my dreams last night. Wiping down door frames and skirting boards in the kitchen. Except it wasn’t my kitchen. hmm So which one of you came down to a squeaky-clean kitchen this morning, courtesy of me? grin

First thing I do every morning is to open windows and allow fresh air to blow through the house. DH complains it’s too cold but his opinion doesn’t count as he wouldn’t know where to start re housework.? As our cleaner and ironing service are out of action at the moment we are both doing what needs done although at a slower pace now. The motivation I had 5 weeks ago when we started self isolating has got up and gone.

I like to keep the house tidy, ocassional dusting and vacuuming, washing windows a room at a time but kitchen and bathrooms thoroughly cleaned regularly, nothing over zealous. The rooms we are not using at the moment are just being aired.

Then, there is the garden !! Would much rather be gardening than any of the above?

like Katyj I found myself doing a lot at first,but I can't be bothered so much now.Perhaps if I'm still safe when the end is in sight I may have another burst of energy.

nipsmum Sun 12-Apr-20 14:09:09

I don't normally do much housework so it would be difficult to do much less.

Saggi Sun 12-Apr-20 14:20:51

Yes , less real housework . But keeping up to scratch on cleaning my hard surfaces every other day ( door handles , remote controls, letter box, doorbell, door knocker, every surface and handle in my kitchen , in fact everything we touch. So really I'm cleaning more than ever.Hoovering ,not so much, and dusting very little , because of the hard surface regime! Nobody is gonna see it anyway....oh and it’s 4 years since Ive ironed anything..... try not ironing ,it’s bloody liberating!

I`m doing no housework as OH does it but i do 95% of the cooking.
I did find it funny watching him clean the windows though.
The streaks were massive but i did say at least they are clean streaks.
It works for us.

Marydoll, steam clean away if it helps you feel better. I looked into it, though, and actually retrieved the machine from the garage - for once.

The jury is out on whether the huge, powerful commercial steam cleaners are effective in killing the virus. The steam generated is unlikely to be kept in the same spot long enough! I'll stick to diluted bleach for now.

Callistemon Sun 12-Apr-20 14:42:55

I will steam clean the floors tomorrow but it depends on how long MissMarydoll's tricky maths questions take.

Or perhaps Tuesday, tomorrow is a Bank Holiday.
And I did whiz round with a rechargeable vacuum cleaner this morning.

Callistemon Sun 12-Apr-20 14:43:51

It wasn't mine SueDonim!

Perhaps you could do mine tonight, please.

Romola
Dust If You Must
Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?
Dust if you must, but there’s not much time,
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish and life to lead.
Dust it you must, but the world’s out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.
Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it’s not kind.
And when you go (and go you must)
You, yourself, will make more dust.

Today you can't do much of this but you could relax read a book put your feet up and dust tomorrow
Happy Easter to you all x

NannyG123 Sun 12-Apr-20 15:42:11

I'm doing more, especially wiping everything down.

Romola Sun 12-Apr-20 15:54:11

Thank you so much, Scrumptious, for that poem. Rose Milligan expresses my feelings so perfectly. I will copy it.

Sawsage2 Sun 12-Apr-20 16:18:56

Yes, dust if you must but I'm enjoying old films on Talking Pictures, avoiding the news, doing jigsaws and reading. Missing family but Face timing instead.

Megs36 Sun 12-Apr-20 16:25:43

Not sure if this statement will bring me lots of accusatory voices but is it really necessary to continually wipe down and sanitize if no-one is leavingor coming in the house,, I thought the virus was only considered ‘catching’ by direct contact,sneezing,coughing etc. We are sleeping separately,supposed to use separate bathrooms - impossible - not eat together....WHY.Weve both got the same germs I guess.

SueDonim Sun 12-Apr-20 16:25:48

grin Callistemon!

I can’t tell you how disappointed I was when I went into my kitchen this morning and realised my kitchen was its usual self. ?
