Cutlery and dishwashers

I haven’t been on here in an age and today this is my second thread, we’ve been so busy with COVID illness and a stop start build because of same.

My question is about cutlery. I had an inexpensive everyday set from Argos when we came back from Canada in 1990 but slowly the set diminished. My husband has or should I say HAD because I put a stop to it, the habit of taking a knife or a spoon out to his workshop for something or other. So I bought 2 sets of 4 settings from John Lewis, good weight nice handles, plain and comfortable but they’ve been ruined by the dishwasher in no time at all. The Argos set was never affected.

I have a silver cutlery set from mother in law which, I do not like, heavy fussy and nightmare to polish plus I just don’t like eating off silver. Like I don’t like drinking out of pewter.

So does anyone have a cutlery recommendation for dishwasher that doesn’t pit like mad?

We have two sets of twelve place settings from Lakeland bought twelve years ago they are still as good as the day of purchase and are constantly in dishwasher.

(I put my silver best cutlery in dishwasher but separate from any other cutlery)

I have Robert Welch cutlery. It gets used daily and put in the dishwasher daily and is still in excellent condition. You should be able to buy it on special offer somewhere.

We have Laguiole, we started with the steak knives and then a full set. We have had them about 15 years and they are in the dishwasher every day.

They also had a good sale on their website.

I buy from the Nisbets online catering suppliers. They sell a wide range of Cutlery designed for use by the professional catering trade, and offer a wide range of designs and prices.
Likewise, my husband had a habit of removing my cutlery from the house either to use at work, or outside in his shed.
I have even caught him using one of my best vegetable peeling knives to cut through carpet before now, rather than buy new blades for his Stanley knife!

I regularly was my cutlery in the dishwasher without a problem, but l always rinse it under the tap as soon as it’s been used to remove any build up off tea stains or fruit acids that can tarnish the surface of any cutlery over a long period of time.

Apart from a few wooden- and bone-handled pieces passed down from the family which I wash by hand, we’ve a rare old selection of cutlery from various sets and none of it has ever been affected by the dishwasher. I’ve never heard of this problem. confused

My cutlery is a mixture of some inherited from my MiL, and the set I received as a wedding present.
Both stainless steel, the wording on them is Crusade and Community.
I have bought a new set of teaspoons because DH takes them off into the garden and they never come back.
They all come out of the dishwasher shining as new.

No problem with cutlery in the dishwasher here. I bought some extra teaspoons from Boyes, inexpensive, and they are excellent.

Posted too soon. I meant to say that DH likes to use wooden handled knives and forks, which need handwashing. Why he isn’t satisfied with the ordinary ones I don’t know. It isn’t as if he ever does the washing up.

Another vote for Robert Welch cutlery here. Cutlery, knives and utensils from RW have been in constant daily use, and thrown into the dishwasher for years and years and they still look like new. A good investment.

We bought WMF cutlery about 40 yeas ago and it goes into the dishwasher every day.
I am careful to buy “good” dishwasher tabs as I used to find own brand cheapos were very rough but I believe even own brands are perfectly good nowadays, so it’s just my preference.

Cabbie21 I also prefer wooden-handled knives- mine appears to be sharper so I hand wash them. Everything else goes in the dishwasher.

Yes, I have some from Boyes, thinking about it. And IKEA, cheap as chips. We have fourteen round the table for meals regularly (in normal times), so need a lot of spare cutlery. None of it has ever come to harm in the dishwasher. Perhaps it is something to do with the tablets, as Maw says.

we only use compressed tablets for pans and oven trays/shelves/self basting roaster etc. We use gel from Aldi it is kinder. For glassware we use dw liquid, now becoming more difficult to source. Also in soft water W Yorkshire we never ever use dw salt. We also had knives, cutlery and an array of great scissors and devices from wonderful Boyes which go in the dw on 40deg quick wash and come out squeaky clean and shiny. I should say this is all after years of experimentation. We hand wash bone handles cutlery and crystal glasses. At this time of year, for students, Sainsbury have reduced/cheap cutlery, fine for kitchen use. However, no idea how or why cutlery pits?!
