Oven slob.

OK. I confess. It’s taken me two Ovenmate packs to clean my oven. I left it soaking overnight. Cleaned what I could but deffo wasn’t happy so I’m leaving it for it’s second soak at the moment I’m hoping it’s only two soaks that will do it!

Any other oven slobs here?

Barmeyoldbat Thu 28-Jan-21 17:01:44

Yes I put my hand up to being an oven slob. Once a year I have someone into give then cooker and oven and real good clean. They do it far better than I ever could.

I never do open roasting so mine isn't too bad. It has a pyrolytic setting for cleaning which works, but creates horrible fumes - need to keep the back door open.
After having gas ovens most of my life, electric is cleaner.
I still prefer gas though, more controllable.

I pretty much ignore mine until I cook roast pork and then good crackling demands the ultimate oven sacrifice. My oven has removable liners which, along with the racks, go into the dishwasher, and I have a silicone liner which I bought from Aldi which fits the oven bottom perfectly and just needs a wipe over. My son usee an oven cleaning firm and says it looks sensational afterwards.

This thread inspired me to clean our filthy oven for the first time in years months. I'm not reading this again!

I always take a dish out of the oven before stirring or tasting, and then put it back. I have burnt myself on oven door/shelf/dish too many times to do anything else.

For the last 15 years I have been using a slow cooker for most casseroles.

MawBe - you can tell by the excitement in my post that it was definitely the high light of our Christmas visitors. That is no one except the masked and gloved oven cleaner.

Callistemon Mon 04-Jan-21 22:46:56

I think I am a really weird person, from what I have read on this thread. I actually LIKE cleaning my oven, about every six months or so!

I like it when it's done, very satisfying, and always resolve to keep it clean but then I don't.

Puzzler61 Mon 04-Jan-21 22:34:38

When I’m cooking say, a casserole, I lift the lid and dive in with a spoon several times to give it a stir, then the liquid splashes.
When the liquid lands on the shelves it turns to a sort of brown solid gel that wraps around the rungs. I’m sure there’s a proper word for it.
Mine is gas BTW which I think is dirtier than electric.

M0nica Mon 04-Jan-21 22:27:50

No, Mawbe it isn't a putdown, it is a real query the answer to which has puzzled me for many years. I usually back out of copmetitive cleaning threads because my standards are so low I would be drummed off GN if people realised, which, as I said, is why I cannot work out either how my oven stays clean or others don't

MawBe Mon 04-Jan-21 20:35:22

Iam64 the way things are going, that sounds like the highlight of my social calendar hmm

MawBe Mon 04-Jan-21 20:33:15

which is why I cannot understand what people do to get them so dirty
?????
Ooh is that meant to put us lesser mortals in our place? .

I have an oven (like NotSpaghetti) that has a setting where it heats to a temperature that turns dirt to dust - mine is a Siemens. When you open the door once it has cooled, there is a wee pile of dust to wipe away. It’s brilliant! For the shelves (which can’t stay in under these temperatures) I use Oven Mate for shelves. Also brilliant. They just need rinsed and are totally clean when they come out of the bags. Oh, I love my oven.

I think I am a really weird person, from what I have read on this thread. I actually LIKE cleaning my oven, about every six months or so! I'd rather do that than dust, hoover or iron any day! I think it's because I enjoy dismantling things, sorting them out and putting them back together - learned from my Dad when I was very young and my older brothers showed no interest in anything practical. I can also strip down a carburretor and clean it, which is now a defunct skill, alas!!!!

M0nica Mon 04-Jan-21 19:17:44

I do cook from scratch and rarely do any oven cleaning, a quick wipe every month or so. Count me among the slobs. But when I had a repair man in when a thermostat needed repairing, he commented how clean my oven was, which is why I cannot understand what people do to get them so dirty.

MawBe, the professional oven cleaner I 'employed' used to work for Guide Dogs. She rescues donkeys in her spare time and helps out at our dog club occasionally. She also paints and draws - dogs of course. She loves labradors (of course) and spent a lot of time cleaning our oven at the same time as helping to socialise our then 9 week old labrador puppy.
We all had a very jolly time and my oven has never gleamed like this since it was installed several years ago. Who knew the sides came off? Who knew the stains on the glass front could be banished? Like you, I love to cook and have become more of a baker since March, like many others.
So I'm looking forward to the prof cleaner returning and casting her expert eye over the pup as well.

I am a keen cook as evidenced by my glass oven doors and I am impressed by your industry , ladies but personally I swear by Ovenu , only every couple of years now I am on my own and I think I only paid £90ish last time for a range cooker with cast iron gas burners and 4 ovens.
The lovely man also replaced the (dead) bulbs in the 2 main ovens and taking it apart meant cleaning bits you would have no access to, doing it yourself. Money well spent!

MaizieD Mon 04-Jan-21 12:27:06

Total complete and utter slob here. I think I've cleaned an oven about twice in my entire life. And, no, I don't get anyone in to do it for me.

I and Mr M are still alive and I've never, to my knowledge poisoned anyone with my oven based cooking.

Let sleeping dirt lie...

(I do have those silicone sheet things in both ovens, but I forget that they're there)

Callistemon Mon 04-Jan-21 12:20:09

I put it off because we were going to have roast duck.
Now I'm putting it off because I may do roast pork with (I hope) crispy crackling.

Callistemon Mon 04-Jan-21 12:18:38

grin

Did anyone else notice the thread following this one is titled 'Grease' very apt, smile

Puzzler61 Mon 04-Jan-21 12:14:01

Surely a dirty oven is the sign of a competent Cook who makes everything from scratch? ?
I am meticulous about the glass hob and glass oven door and it gets done everyday. The oven/grill gets done about once a month with a proprietary brand of oven cleaner “Oven Mate” that sells for about £5 in B&M type shops.
Includes a very thick sealable (admittedly plastic) bag that the shelves pop into with half the cleaning gel and you just turn it about a few times over about 8 hours. Gets rid of all that black gunk.
The other half of the gel is smeared on the sides, bottom and roof of the oven when cold, and left for a few hours before wiping out. Use gloves to do it as it is quite a harsh chemical product.
Voila!

Luckygirl Mon 04-Jan-21 12:12:31

I don't even use my oven!

I have a remoska and, living alone, I find it more than adequate for me. Just pop it in the dishwasher after use.,

lovebeigecardigans1955 Mon 04-Jan-21 12:06:32

Over on Mumsnet there's a thread about using cheap dishwasher tablets to clean ovens, washing machines and the like. There are claims of it being life changing so it must be worth a go.

nadateturbe Mon 04-Jan-21 08:55:08

That seems very often Ladyleftfieldlover.

I wipe the sides and the bottom and door before it cools down almost every time I use it. Takes 5 mins tops. Every few months I take out the element and spray clean the top.
