How do you keep your kitchen knives sharp?
I have tried and tried with a steel with no success, even after a 'tutorial' by our local butcher. I've bought various gadgets with wheels and carborundum stones - but no - nothing works for me.
Husband can get a real edge using the steel, but he's not around all the time and anyway, I'd like to be able to learn this skill myself. I was just trying to slice tomatoes for lunch and believe me my knife just squashed the things flat.
Help!

We have an electric sharpener which my DH will run the favourite knives through once in a while. Works well. I never did get the knack with the steel.

I remember when young our cats would come running when they heard Dad start running a knife over the steel on a Sunday. They knew something good would be cut, and they may get a sliver!

Thanks, there's a lot to digest here. I've decided to get one from Amazon that you pull the knife through. I've watched Utube tutorials but just don't seem able to put what I see into practise.
I'll let you know what I think of my new sharpener when it comes.

I don't know what kind of knife you use. If you use a Japanese knife, you should read the article on sharpners for Japanese knives . There are many ways to do it. very informative and helpful article.
