Help. My Dyson has died - recommendations please!

I have had my Dyson stick cordless for about 9 years and it just keeps going, but it has some inherent problems.

It won’t “park”, it has to be propped against something if you need to leave it for a moment, and as it’s top-heavy it usually falls over.

It’s a pain having to hold the on switch throughout vacuuming, it’s tiring and would be difficult for many people.

The brush is very easily tangled with hair, which is a nuisance and reduces efficiency.

I’ve been waiting for it to die, but it just carries on and does a reasonable job and has good battery life. Can’t grumble really.

Would not buy aything made by Dyson.
I am very happy with my Gtech upright and small handheld one. So lightweight, handle on upright folds down for storage. Easy to empty and to charge. Handheld one great for stairs and cars.
Shark also has a very good name. Would go for either Shark or GTEch if needed to replace

Have had 3 Dyson over the years and decided on a change and opted for the Shark Pet Liftaway (corded). Love it, it's so much better than any of the Dysons I've had. I find it lighter and the suction is much better. It also has little headlights which show up any dog hairs that I can't see (golden labrador hairs on my cream kitchen floor tiles are invisible!). I have recommended the Shark to 2 of my friends (who previously had Dysons) and both are thrilled to bits with it.

I have two Birman cats (medium/long hair), and can thoroughly recommend the Shark Pet Liftaway cordless. It's brilliant at picking up hair.

I just bought a cordless Dyson Animal just for using upstairs but it's so good I'm using it everywhere.

Any really efficient vacuum cleaner is on the heavy side, there’s no getting round that fact.The only thing to decide is cord or cordless, and like lots of us on here, buy a cheap and very light one as well, for everyday cleaning.

Almost everyone I know who bought a Dyson when they first appeared on the market, has given up and bought an alternative - myself included. I have a cordless Bosch which is efficient but heavy so I have bought a cheap cordless one for use upstairs. It has attachments for crevices and stairs. Cost just over £60 on you-know-where. If it packs up, it won't cost a fortune to replace.

A Dyson every time! We have tried just about every make under the sun and always go back to a Dyson, the carpets are so much cleaner using it.It’s only as heavy as most others, in fact for a really deep clean, it needs to be on the heavy side.
A light whizz round hoover gets up the everyday crumbs on the surface and does the hard floors, but the Dyson does the main work once a week.

Gosh, thanks everyone. Lots to think about here - it's definitely not going to be another Dyson that's for certain. It seems that a Shark will be the way forward for me, I think I just need to do some research and decide which one would be best for me.

I also have a cordless shark which I like and gave away my dyson . I’ve been looking at the robot cleaners though they seem to have really come down in price.

As they got older, my parents bought an additional vacuum to keep upstairs. Saved the hassle of dragging a heavy one up the stairs and the bedrooms really don't need as good a vacuum as the high traffic areas downstairs. A lightweight one can be kept in the airing cupboard or somewhere.

My Dyson is rubbish, and about to be advertised on FB for spare parts. I spend more time taking it apart to find out why it isn't picking up than I do using it. Overpriced, over rated and just not any good. I have an old Sebo which is excellent, but a bit heavy.

I remember those days of taking a Dyson apart. I don't understand how Dyson seems to have such a good name as it is so poor compared to many others.

I had a Gtech and the little hand held multi, and loved them, but the main cleaner conked out after 18 months and I didn`t fancy paying £67 for a new motor, so invested in a Shark cordless. I wish I hadn`t. I hate it, mainly because it`s so very heavy. All the gubbins are at the top, which, with my bad back, makes it top heavy and too heavy for me, gives me worse backache than I already have. Also, hairs, etc., wraps around the brushes, despite their claims that it doesn`t. I`ve finally given up and bought a new Gtech plus multi, extravagant I know, but such a relief to know I won`t be struggling with the Shark anymore.

I hate dysons, had nothing but trouble with them and would never get one again. That’s just me and a couple of family members.

Certainly Shark, it was my upgrade from Dyson and I have two dogs. Very happy as are most people I know.

I use a bagged, corded pull along Miele for downstairs but I have had it for so long it is now difficult to buy bags and they are quite expensive.

Upstairs I have a bagless corded Shark which I bought in a sale from Amazon.

I also have a robot but it cannot get itself on and off rugs- I do not have any carpets here.

So just to clarify, do you all have a shark for your main cleaner?

Yes mine is an upright

I won a Dyson in one of the first GN competitions and it’s mostly been brilliant; when it developed an intermittent fault I replaced it with the G-Tech duo (a political decision) and I have to say they’re brilliant. The little machine is great for stairs and odds and ends and the cordless vacuum cleaner is lighter and much easier to use than the the Dyson.

I’m looking at the Tineco cordless A11 hero, it’ll be for upstairs/stairs/car only. The shark (corded) is brilliant downstairs, but heavy to carry upstairs where the valiant Henry needs a spare part.

Sorry, after 25yrs of loving my Dysons, I couldn't buy another after all that sneaky 'Vote Leave', 'No-deal Brexit "will not change anything" ' and 'Now we're off to Singapore' malarkey.

So I bought a Shark - the dog, 2 cats and I are very happy with my decision.

Another fan of the Gtech duo here. The upright has no tools so a hand-held is needed too.

We’ve had a Dyson V6 Fluffy Cordless Vacuum since 2017. It’s lightweight, versatile and so easy to use, my husband does a bit of vacuuming every day. Seems to pick everything up with no problem.

We bought a robot vacuum cleaner, never regretted it.

We have a Shark plug in and a really cheap battery operated 'zoomer' that I bought for £50 at Tesco. They are both really good but when the zoomer dies I will buy a battery Shark to replace it!
