Help. My Dyson has died - recommendations please!

Just that really. My upright Dyson has burnt our bedroom carpet when I was doing the edges. It was standing in the upright position in the same spot for some time and has melted 2 thin stripes where it was standing. DH has "looked" at it and seems to think it's fine but as he needs a sat nav to find the hoover in the first place I'm not convinced and want to get a new one. I'm a bit of a slattern generally so prefer the ease of an upright - preferably fairly light weight. Thanks in advance for any help with this.

I love cordless equipment.

I've got a cordless Shark and whizz round far more regularly than I did with naughty Henry, who used to peek at me from door frames. I've also bought a cordless lawnmower from Spear and Jackson, such freedom!

Another fan of the Gtech duo here. The upright has no tools so a hand-held is needed too.

Love my G-Tech, so light I can carry it upstairs with a couple of fingers and it glides and turn effortlessly, and from hard floor to carpet so easily.

I have bought 3 upright Dysons over the years, the first two of which I have passed onto my adult children. All still going strong. Yes, they have been serviced over the years, perhaps an occasional new part, but the guy who owns the vacuum centre up the road always manages to get them going. When first using them to clean someone else’s carpets it is amazing to see how much they pick up the first few times, which is obviously dirt deeply embedded in the carpet fibres. I have a Henry but only use it for cleaning up after very messy jobs. It is hard work for general cleaning as it doesn’t have a beater bar.

Do people really chuck out their vacuum cleaners once they break down and not attempt to get them repaired? Call me old fashioned but I like to take cars of my appliances. I regularly wash the filters and cut fibres off the beater bar.

Vac repair man does say the newer models are not as good as the old ones but he reckons Dyson are still the best. I personally couldn’t put up with constantly having to recharge batteries. So, always Dyson for me.

Daughter has a new robot vacuum cleaner she has named Brenda (???) she put Brenda to clean downstairs while doing children’s bedtime and came down to find Brenda diligently vacuuming the garden!!?

Since last posting, my new top of the range Dyson has been nothing but a pain. It stopped working completely, I went through all the trouble shooting stuff, nothing.
Eventually rang them and they said they would send a new battery, weren’t remotely interested in hearing what the problem was.
Anyway, when my husband started to remove the battery, it burst into life, loose connection I suppose, but I don’t like it.
Have just bought a new Sebo, so hopefully that will be an improvement.

Contact Dyson. My sister has had a couple of Dysons and whenever she has had problems with one, she has always had great customer service from them.

Sorry to interrupt but I just read an awful thing on Twitter.
This family's dog did a large poo in the dining room in the middle of the night. At 7am the robot vacuum cleaner went into action and smeared the offending item throughout the house!! Eeek.
Moral-if you're thinking of getting one of the robot vacuum cleaners be sure of your pets' continence!

I’d be keeping the robot vacuum cleaner and getting rid of the dog!

Should read Dyson.

We've had 4 dysons. We still have an original and hand held one. Decided to buy a top of range upright shark and I'm very impressed. We have 3 dogs and vacuum most days. Much prefer it to the stain.

I just really wonder why Dyson is so popular because they don’t have a good product. I guess they are just good at advertising and people think if they pay more they get a better item. Certainly not the case with them.

I’ve had a few dysons over the years but to be honest they are nothing like the shark, I have a shark downstairs and a Miele another good brand upstairs, and when it’s their turn to give up, i will replace with both brands

I am very happy with my Allervac which has two filters, because of cat hair and dander allergy. It's made by Numatic, the manufacturers of the Henry, but it's even better cos of the filters.
Plus, its British.

I bought a Tineco recently when I gave my corded Miele to my son. I tried a Dyson but found it heavy and noisy.

I liked the Tineco as it has a spare battery and is quieter than a Dyson. I haven't tried all the attachments yet and the bin has some crevices where compressed dust can linger when emptying it but I probably let the bin get too full..

I am generally happy with it but I find the hand held part quite heavy.

I am going to give it time as I need to go back to lifting weights and getting a stronger core after having to rest after nearly 18 months of inactivity following a nasty flu virus.

If I still find it heavy after getting fitter I'll just have to buy the Shark as well.

We bought a robot, best thing ever.

Never go back to Dyson after having one for years and years. Now have a Halo and find it excellent does a really good job but obviously not very popular as it hasn’t been mentioned on here!..(UK designed and produced as well)...Shark does do a lot of advertising on TV and Halo doesn’t advertise at all as far as I can see..

We’ve had a Dyson V6 Fluffy Cordless Vacuum since 2017. It’s lightweight, versatile and so easy to use, my husband does a bit of vacuuming every day. Seems to pick everything up with no problem.

Yes me to, had it for years, no problems at all. Battery lasts 20 mins and can do round my three bedroom house in that time.

Had a Dyson years ago, didn’t last long went back to a Henry, OH eventually had that in the garage, so I bought a Miele, after 12 yrs it is still going strong and picks up dog hair brilliantly.

Katyj Tue 18-May-21 17:36:04

I’ve had 3 dysons, all began really well but then began to go downhill after a year even though I had the last one serviced it was never any better.
I bought a shark plug in 3 years ago, it’s brilliant, it has taken a lot of hammering as we moved house and didn’t have any carpets for 3 months so had to Hoover the floor boards, but still going strong the suction is very good.

Dotty123 Tue 18-May-21 16:54:08

Had one of the original Dyson’s but it ‘died’ after many years use so replaced it with a new ball Dyson. Hated it! Now have a Sebo - brilliant.

Whatever you choose, remember that your new one will be much better simply because it’s.....new! ?

Grannmarie, thank you for that idea - I'm sure it will be helpful to others as I had no idea about Dyson Doctor and have never heard of it. If I'm perfectly honest my Dyson is pretty old and I've not been that happy with it for a while. I think I'm secretly pleased to have an excuse to tip it. I think I'm going with the Shark PetLiftaway since we have a ginger cat and a sprocker so I think it represents the best option for us. Thanks again all.

Grannmarie Sat 15-May-21 20:05:55

Hi, recklessgran, have you thought about taking it to the DysonDoctor?

When I had problems with my cordless Dyson stick I took it to the DysonDoctor franchise, not far from us in Glasgow, and they repaired it, very reasonably, while we waited.

I'm not sure about links but if you Google DysonDoctor you might find one near you.

I also have a GTech upright cos the stick broke during the first lockdown when everything was shut, so I bought it online.
I use the GTech upstairs and keep the Dyson stick downstairs.

I treated myself to a top-of-the -range Dyson two year ago. It is, without doubt, the worst vacuum cleaner I have ever had. I much prefer the Numatic Henry I bought last year. It is not cordless but it is a far more efficient in every other department and a quarter of the price.
