Or, would you disagree ?
Had to laugh when after telling DS and DIL for ages to clean washing machine with soda crystals rather than a modern brand which costs so much more they tried it.
Text from DIL to say machine now sparkling and no odour - she is amazed !

Alexa

The Tesco white vinegar is in bottles with tiny wee holes on top vinegar comes out of so you have to keep squeezing to get anything out. Is there a way to buy white vinegar in ordinary bottles that can pour properly?

I think mine is from Sainsburys.

I am so happy I started this thread now. Brilliant that many of us use products that cost little, do the job and do not add to pollution.
So come on - let's convert everyone. Give us your tips !

Are soda crystals the same as baking soda?also as someone else asked, how much vinegar and crystals do you mix together?

LtEve Fri 21-May-21 13:23:30

No. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate and washing soda is sodium carbonate.

Having read about the use of vinegar rather than fabric softener I would love to know how much people here use?

Aepgirl Fri 21-May-21 14:10:46

Definitely soda crystals and white vinegar to unblock a sink.

My favourite product is 'Fuller's Earth' - 100% natural and does a brilliant job. For any fat stains on sweatshirts, t-shirts, furniture and more. Sprinkle a thing layer on stain, leave overnight, then shake off and brush off gently before washing. Fat stain, absorbed and gone. Brilliant.

Can some kind person tell us the amount of Soda crystals we need fir washing machine and the proportion of white vinegar you use for other stuff you are cleaning. I am definitely going to take your advice. I will clean the washing machine and then put towels in and wash them but how much soda do I use. Currently I live in a country with soft water. Thank you all. I love Gransnet!

I use one fifth white vinegar to water in a spray bottle to clean my shower cubicle, window's and mirrors.

Kali2 Fri 21-May-21 15:02:19

Same here- have used the same refillable spray for years.

I was told by a French lady that white vinegar and a splash of washing up liquid in a spray bottle provides a powerful weed killer and saves using dangerous chemicals. Better for the environment. Not tried it yet, but am going to as soon as all this rain stops!

I always put some soda crystals in with e red very wash, softens the water in our hard water to help get the clothes clean.

Witzend Fri 21-May-21 16:08:17

Anniel, I put about half a cup (not mug) of crystals in the drawer. About the same amount of powder goes straight into the drum.

When doing the 90 deg cleaning washes, I used about double the amount of SCs, though, no powder.

I used to use the pods, which are apparently the worst for gunge-ing up the machine.

Ro60 sorry if I'm being dense. What do you do with the tea bags to clean a cast iron casserole?

Shinamae Fri 21-May-21 16:29:58

Conditioner white vinegar and a splash of lemon disinfectant (Astoish)

Shinamae Fri 21-May-21 16:30:37

Astonish!!!

I love white vinegar in the wash instead of fabric softener, it’s great for microfibre cloths because they come out soft but without the filmy stuff you get from fabric softener. Extra boost soda crystals are great too, I was paying a fortune for branded in-wash stain and odour remover but the extra boost stuff is only about £1.50 and you only need to use half the amount that you do of the branded stuff.

Maxseeen Fri 21-May-21 17:08:15

Hi, it does but the vinegar doesn’t leave the film on them so they’re still absorbent

Pippa22 Fri 21-May-21 17:09:22

Really encouraging to see that so many of you are forgoing the aerosol bottles for much better for the environment traditional cleaners. So much cheaper too and very effective. This is the soda I use for washing machine, sinks cleaning and the vinegar I use for almost everything. Both really cheap, soda from Tesco and vinegar bought online and the house never smells of a chip shop !

Maxseeen Fri 21-May-21 17:10:06

Sorry I forgot to say just put the vinegar in the softener compartment but no softener. smile
