Just this really? Curious as was brought up by some friends and everyone had a strong opinion on what they thought best/most hygienic.

Everything goes in the dishwasher. I use stainless pans and baking sheets, and if they don’t come completely clean the first time they get soaked, they are wiped with a silicone scrubbie thing then go in again. The scrubbie goes in the dishwasher too. If things aren’t suitable for the dishwasher I don’t buy them. I know - lazy, but stainless saves the day.

I’ve been reminded that we had to knit dishcloths at primary school. The teacher used to take each one out of the box, hold it up and ask whose it was. Mine looked so awful I used to sit at the front so I could grab it quick so no one else would see it.

Dishcloth changed at least once a day. Pan brush and toothbrush used on small awkward utensils i.e. garlic press regularly put in dishwasher.

One poster was adamant that the correct thing to do with a yoghurt lid was to offer the thing to one’s dog.

Mine’s not too keen on the rhubarb ones

If the thing needs more than a quick rinse it goes in the dish washer.

Dishcloth which is regularly soaked in bleach, plus I add a tiny amount of bleach to my washing up water, a tip from my MIL to keep dishcloths fresher.

I've been thinking what my mother used. Grandma used to knit dishcloths for the family. She also used a small mop on a stick, and brillo pads. Do Brillo Pads still exist?

Callistemon Wed 01-Sept-21 21:11:34

I think I'll crochet some dishcloths.
Do you use cotton thread, string or is there a special yarn?
Christmas presents?

I do like my dishwasher, perhaps I'm lazy.

Oh, and no dishwasher. Had one once. Didn't like it. Won't have one again.

I like a sponge with a scrub side. And a metal scourer for burnt on stuff. BUT I used to love my mums knitted dish cloths. And I've just realised sponges are not ecco friendly. SO I might knit myself some dish cloths.

I like knitting cotton dishcloths in the winter, but my stock is now depleted and I have had to buy a couple of cotton dishcloths, my scourers are from IKEA and a I have a couple of brushes. The dishwasher goes on every day, but at the moment we have so much allotment stuff to prep that I seem to be always washing up a maslin pan and/or bakeware. I change the dishcloth daily, but otherwise am not fussy.

All 3, a non stick sponge, a J-cloth and a long handled brush.

BBbevan Wed 01-Sept-21 20:35:11

A dishwasher !

Mamardoit Wed 01-Sept-21 20:34:12

I use a washable dishcloths and a plastic brush. I put them in a bleach solution every night. If I do need a scourer (not very often) I have sheets of the green stuff and I cut a bit off and throw it away after use.

Most go in the dishwasher. Those that can't, I wash with a dishcloth, pan sponge and dish brush depending upon what is stuck on.

MissAdventure Wed 01-Sept-21 16:50:57

Whatever comes to hand really.
I have a selection of things.

Callistemon Wed 01-Sept-21 16:49:19

Do you make your own, SeaNain?

SeaNain Wed 01-Sept-21 16:01:58

Crotcheted cotton, washed daily...

Lincslass Wed 01-Sept-21 15:54:03

Non scratch scrubby sponge, otherwise dishwasher.

I’m not prepared to admit how infrequently I wash my sponge scourer thingy but they do go in my dishwasher or washing machine if I remember.

But living on my own my dishwasher only goes on every four of five days (I am lazy and hate emptying it so cram it full) and my washing machine about every ten days. I own over thirty pairs of knickers so don’t need to wash very often!!

I do occasionally soak my sponge in bleach but mainly rely on hot water and washing up liquid to keep it clean. I do a fair amount of hand washing as I bake a lot and hand wash the baking tins and utensils.

There, confession made, I am a slut! But I do have a cleaner so my house is immaculate after her visit. She says that she quite enjoys coming to me as she can see plenty to do, it’s obvious I don’t clean before she comes unlike some of her clients!

We use sponges with the green bit for scouring with a Brillo pad if necessary. Sponges bought in bulk, changed roughly every week. pots and pans only as the rest go in the dishwasher.

NotAGran55 Wed 01-Sept-21 15:04:24

Dishwasher for everything except long stemmed glasses which get plunged into very hot soapy water and swished with an old fashioned dishcloth.
They are dried with a linen tea towel (only use for it) and the dish cloth and tea towel go straight into the washing machine at the end of the washing-up.
Anything stubborn on baking trays is soaked and scraped off with a metal food slice thing that came with our cooker . My husband’s favourite kitchen gadget.

Happysexagenarian Wed 01-Sept-21 15:02:06

The dishwasher, either the electric one or DH!
But on the odd occasion I have to wash something by hand I use a brush or scrubby sponge.

SueDonim Wed 01-Sept-21 15:01:44

Just don’t put the dog in the microwave, Callistemon. That won’t end well! grin

Callistemon Wed 01-Sept-21 14:59:08

I've just had a Lakeland catalogue - I shall investigate!
