What do you wash up dishes with? J Cloth, brush or sponge?

Brush and sponge. Disinfected daily.

I use a sponge, one with a scrubby side!

I tend to buy large packets and use a new one weekly.

Sponge which gets changed when it looks tatty enough. Everything gets rinsed well after washing.

Use dishwasher almost every day, so sponge ways clean until needs replacing.

Does the sponge stand up well to the dishwasher without discolouring?

Interesting! I use a sponge, but was told by my friends a brush is more hygienic and that a sponge is a Petri dish for germs.

I use a brush. I pop it in the dishwasher every couple of days. Before I had a dishwasher I used to soak my brush in a mug of bleachy water and it cleaned the brush and whitened the mug at the same time.

Brush and dishcloth. I put the dishcloth in the microwave for 1 minute to kill any thing lurking! The washed as normal after a couple of days.

im sure someone told me they microwave their sponges when wet to kill bacteria

I use a sponge which is microwaved when wet daily. I also use the anti bacterial Fairy liquid which claims protection for your sponge. I use until the green scouring layer is almost gone. I then keep the old one for washing bread dough untesils, after which I throw away.

I never thought about microwaving.

I use a cloth (bleached regularly) and a brush for anything stubborn. I don't like sponges, as they make the suds go funny?

I’ve never had a dishwasher - wash it all by hand. I use a brush / sponge scourer - and put them in the washing machine every couple of days. Husband usually uses lukewarm water to wash up when he does it - after many, many years of marriage, I’ve learned not to sweat the small stuff - so now I sometimes wash it again in hot water. We have a big garden and enjoy walking etc, so we are fairly healthy and don’t seem to go down with bugs very often.

Disgusting jiffy cloth story:

I once popped into the kitchen of our local boozer to have a chat with the landlady / cook.

She was in the middle of serving those annoying pies that you only get in pubs, as in a ramekin of stew with a sort of pastry hat, which will explode as soon as it sets eye upon a knife and fork.

Anyway. She was wiping the gravy off the side of the little ramekin with a crusty old jiffy cloth that was quite literally black with mold. Covered in it.

The pub is now under new management, thank goodness.

I use a silicone brush. So easy to clean.

Sponge for every day and one of those silver wiry things for tough burnt on bits.

Why do I keep saying jiffy cloth, not j cloth? Was it once jiffy cloth, or am I just being stupid?

Oh yes, and the dog does come in handy too.
I’m reminded of the first thread that I read on MN which made me laugh out loud.
There was a discussion on whether, while taking breakfast in a B&B, one would lick the lid of a yoghurt.
One poster was adamant that the correct thing to do with a yoghurt lid was to offer the thing to one’s dog.
