For me it’s my soup maker and a sellotape dispenser! Couldn’t do without either of them!

Masha from Lakeland - perfect mash (not just potato) every time. Also beats egg whites etc.
Kuhn Rikon can opener. Debonds the can from the lid, doesn't touch the food at all, so totally hygienic and no sharp edges. Perfect if you use empty tins for crafts and the lid can be used as bird scarers if you grow your own. Got mine from Amzon.

Love my Lakeland soup maker, and the little silver things with fuse wire that thread sewing needles (no idea what they are called).

My choice is a simple silicone 'thingy' to go on the top of boiling saucepans to stop them from overflowing everywhere. It's brilliant. It has two little handles and a central, adjustable, opening/closing area. You simply use it instead of a pan lid. It can be used in a microwave too. It works well and my pans never overflow now.

My mobile phone, with its satnav and apps for everything.
Also, for about £3, an egg timer thingy, you put in the water with the eggs. Perfect every time.

I am not a gadget person but I did buy a Vitamix many years ago...makes the best soup ever. More recently I bought an air fryer. Amazing

Lots of things I wouldn't be without in the kitchen - I too remember the days of a twin tub (and before that the launderette!) which I inherited from my great aunt, along with her fridge, when she went into a care home. I was just setting up in my first unfurnished place so was very grateful, but even more grateful when my mum bought me an automatic washing machine a couple of years later.

Outside the kitchen the thing that has revolutionised my life the most is my Fitbit. I asked for one from my kids for Christmas a few years ago as I knew I needed to get more exercise. Last year they bought me a newer one as the original was becoming unreliable and the new one has more features. Since having one I have not only got fitter but have lost a considerable amount of weight - over 4 stones! Not all due to walking, as a change in my medication contributed, but as I began to lose weight, walking more became easier and using the Fitbit motivates me to do little extra bits of walking such as parking a bit further away from where I'm going to get the extra steps, and realising now that there are places I can walk to where I used to drive. I now regularly join a group for a weekly health walk which I'm sure I wouldn't have even considered a few years ago. It's great since retiring last year realising that I feel younger and fitter than ever despite being older. It helps too if you are competitive as you can link it with friends who have one and compare their step counts over a workweek or a weekend. Sometimes I go out for an extra walk just to beat a friend's step count as the competition period nears its close!

Pollytickle - when I lived in a bed sit in the 80’s I used a salad spinner to ‘spin dry’ by knickers ! So in our house, a salad spinner was always called a ‘knicker spinner’ …!!!

My stick blender. So much easier than getting the liquidiser out and washing it afterwards.
I make lots of soup (the old fashioned way) and whizzing the soup in the saucepan is very satisfying to me.
It's the little things gringrin

My Moulinex cookeo is just fantastic! It’s an electric pressure cooker and I love it. Makes soups, casseroles, risotto etc in half the time.
Used it all summer making ratatouille and tomato sauce with our garden crop.
We’re in South West France

Soon after I got married (1980),i bought a plastic steamer. It was advertised on the back of a Sunday supplement. I have used it for cooking rice in the microwave ever since. I would hate to be without it. Put in rice, cover with water, lid on, set for 10 minutes, perfectly cooked rice every time. Also good for vegetables and on occasion, pasta.

Another cheer for the Thermomix. In use almost every day. I've had it about 12 years. Other things I would not be without include a cherry stoner, runner bean slicer and Victorianox (?) sharp knives.

How big is a gadget? In my view the very BEST of all has to be our automatic washing machine!
Here in France until 1966 there was only well water available in our village and it was the women's job to take washing to the 'lavoir', a building on the bank of the river. where they sloshed and slopped the clothes in cold water, even in the cold of deep winter, to do the laundry.
I couldn't bear to see Mme SS having to do that and luckily it was before her time.
Never again!

My air fryer, I had moved house and the kitchen was so bad I pulled it out. Then Covid arrived so I had no cooker for 8 months until new kitchen was installed. My air fryer was a godsend along with my slow cooker and soup maker.

An egg cooker. Small and for up to 3 eggs. Bought in Germany, it had an egg piercer and a detachable water container which showed how to fill for types of cooked eggs wanted: soft, medium or hard. The markings were still clear some 17years later when it was lost in a house move. Since then I’ve tried many different types of boiled egg cookers. All third and fourth rate and, all for 6 eggs at a time and with water containers whose printed info regarding amounts to use for differing types of eggs, washed off within days. I so miss the original one.

My favourite gadget is my Themomix. I use it nearly everyday.

Tusue Sat 16-Oct-21 11:09:00

Definitely my slow cooker for stews, curries ,anything really and I have nutri bullet which I think is meant for smoothies etc but I use every time I make soup.

Sadgrandma Sat 16-Oct-21 11:08:28

I love my Toast n Egg toaster. It is a toaster that you can also boil, scramble or poach eggs at the same time. I also use it to steam a few vegetables for my DGD’s tea or heat baked beans. I wouldn’t be without it

grandtanteJE65 Sat 16-Oct-21 11:07:06

Battery run lawn mower, hedge-cutter and shears for cutting the edges of the grass.

Funnygran Sat 16-Oct-21 11:05:49

I use my electric vegetable steamer probably 5 out of 7 days. Much less faffing about than with pans of water and I occasionally make DH his favourite steamed pudding in it. I also give thanks for my automatic washing machine every time I use it. I had a twin tub when I was first married and thought I was in heaven when we upgraded to an automatic.

Tiggersuki Sat 16-Oct-21 11:05:44

Hand held blender, cannot manage without for soups and smoothies. Cheap and brilliant.

inishowen Sat 16-Oct-21 11:04:33

Air fryer. We use it for everything. It's brilliant.
