Candles, do you like it dislike them

I saw the effects of a candle left unattended in a neighbours house some years ago. It was on top of a TV, and the TV imploded. It set the whole of the ground floor alight before the occupants upstairs were alerted.
They had to leave the house for 6 weeks while the damage was put right.
Candles have to be respected, and never left alone.

None ever for me my DSIL left one burning and almost set the house on fire. If your house is clean and aired that is all you need.

Crackling Wood Wick candles any day. For those who feel candles are dangerous and cause fires, yes they can. But it's really stupid humans who are the real cause. Fire service inspects our home due to DHs deafness. We have over the years often had candles on a wooden coffee table at time of visit. Comments have been, "Glad to see you have a metal tray under the candle holder; great your candle is not taller than the width of the glass plate; do you usually have nothing else on the table the candle is on; no matches in sight". If you want to use a candle, use it safely and enjoy.

I quite like nice candles, but they set off OHs asthma so I rarely use except in kitchen to get rid of cooking smells.
Some candle makers show ingredients, and most are made with paraffin wax and some with soy or beeswax, perfumed ones have added natural or chemical fragrances. It put me off when I read what my favourites contained. I suppose they essentially fill the room with artificial smells and if they are smokey they aren’t great for lungs.

I have a scented candle burning most days. I love them. It burns on the counter top in the kitchen, which is a big open-plan room. I don’t think after all these years we have been negatively affected by this.

I like candles and a dimmed light ambience but l prefer battery operated candles and tea lights. They are quite reasonably priced, very effective and not a fire hazard.

I have candles from The White Company and Jo Malone they are quite expensive but they last well.

I agree, White Company and Jo Malone are lovely, I have had some copies of fragrances from Mataram, they smelt ok, but you get what you pay for and the fragrance wasn’t very strong. I also agree that some are very sickly too, so I tend to stick to what I like, fig, spicy, orange, pomegranate and lavender or geranium ?

I'm married to a retired firefighter so we never have them...at least not lit ones but a cupboard full of gifts we've been given.

I love them. Wilcos do some lovely ones. The mandarin and ginger one is gorgeous. I had a visitor one day and she was convinced it was a Jo Malone candle. Can't stand vanilla ones as they give me a headache.

rafichagran I am surprised that you can buy candles from a charity shop. My daughter is the manager of a charity shop and says they are not allowed to sell them as it is illegal.

I think you mean some charity shop don't like to sell them, hardly illegal, they are sold everywhere around us. Don't think anyone passed a law against selling candles in a charity shop. Probably one of their biggest sellers as they actually buy them in and sell them in boxes as they do a lot of other goods like Xmas cards and more. Coloured, scented tea lights are very popular !!!!

I forgot to say that some charity shops like Sue Ryder will only sell them if they have instructions enclosed with them, perhaps that is what your daughter told you

Win I buy my candles in charity shops. They are sold in all normal shops so why not charity shops. It really is not illegal.
The poster who said her daughter is a Manager of a charity shop and cannot sell them as they are illegal is wrong. It's either her daughter has decided not to sell them, or that particular charity made that rule as they think it dangerous. I really dont know where people get there information from.
You used my user name at the beginning of your post. I have never said they do not sell candles in charity shops.

I think most candles in a jar come with a sticker at the bottom anyway. Although I confess, when I buy them in charity shops it's not the first thing I look for. I am very responsible when I burn mine at home.
I am going to light one in a minute and enjoy it. My partner can take or leave candles though

I also love Senti The Orchid Diffusers, they're beautiful items and look nothing at all like diffusers.
White Flowers is lovely, Jasmine and Geranium is very, very nice, but there are times when the Geranium scent gives me a headache, their latest incarnation is Ginger and Bergamot, and it's stunning!
However, my favourite scent in a house is fresh air!

Can't stand them. I keep about three of the white pillar ones, not too tall, just incase of power cuts.

Have you considered the battery ones Pepper? I have two and they give a nice warm glow, also they have timers so go off automatically at the end of the evening. Very safe.
