Or a mixture of both, which do you prefer, for me it’s paint all the way, used to have painted walls with one wall as feature in each room but now thinking paint all the way through.

Emulsion every time but we do have feature wall in the lounge that is always papered. The decorator told me that if we wanted it emulsioning he would have to strip back all the old paste residue otherwise the paint would crackle - this did happen to a friend of our who thought she knew better......looked awful after a few months.

Paint always, much easier when the time comes to re-decorate.

When we moved into the house, the kitchen was wallpapered with Anaglypta! Took absolutely ages to get off even with a steamer. Then had the walls plastered. Looks much better now.

Living room too had the dreaded Anaglypta, that too has gone.

Chnges from house to house, room to room, decade to decade.

Wallpaper for me. I've got a beautiful sample with a parrot looking at me right now.

& I’ve got rolls wallpaper full of herrings, wondering whether to paint or just hang this paper?

As I've been doing my own decorating for years now, painting is easier than wallpapering any time. But I do like to see nice wallpaper if it's appropriate.

Smooth walls in this house, so paint every time. Our previous house had walls that were far from smooth, with plenty of nail holes (I imagine from many previous owners putting up pictures) so wallpaper was the answer - it covered many flaws.

Although wallpaper looks lovely, it means lots of work scraping it off to replace it (which I’m no fan of doing); plus, repeated scraping can damage the plaster on the walls if you’re not careful scraping off the paper.

I’m all for ease when it comes to decorating, and for me, painting is far easier than wallpapering.

Definitely paint for me.. I have so many paintings they need to be shown against a neutral background,, but I've never like wallpaper..

Mixture, but each room is different.

Each room in my house has its own unique character. None are 100% wallpaper. Some have only paint... but it takes ages for me to settle on both colours and papers.

Never had wallpaper, lining paper painted suited me
Then I had William Morris good quality paper along the stairs wall because small grandchildren were causing muddy finger marks. I added a diffrrrnt pattern to the sitting room wall on the left of the door. Gorgeous pattern and the wall has remained pristine over three years and four dogs (plus children)
I don’t see it as a feature wall, more as a wall reducing work fir me as well as bring beautiful

Sounds good, there are some really nice Morris wallpapers.

I like a mixture tbh.
Wallpaper adds texture and warmth to a room, if a tiny room then paint only.

I go with paint. All my walls have been recently plastered during the renovations so they’re lovely and flat. I can’t bear the idea of ruining the finish with wallpaper.

TopGunner Fri 22-Nov-24 11:51:56

Not bothered at all, if I have a papered wall then it has to be plain so I can paint it as I think a papered wall is warmer than a plastered wall painted. I do like one wall to have a patterned paper, or even a different colour.

This house was around 4 years old when I bought it and luckily the previous owners had only painted it so I have continued to paint The kitchen and bathroom are fully tiled, walls and floor. The downstairs loo wall is partly tiled and the floor and hall floors are fully tiled.

I was not having the trauma of removing wallpaper from every room 3 houses ago and having to re-paper as the walls were crumbling so not fit for paint.

MeowWow Sat 09-Jul-22 13:25:26

Paint.
I like wallpaper too but in other peoples houses.

I have a nice soft white all over the interior of my home auro paint 321 which is dead matt. It is lovely and I have plenty of colour with same as teacheranne. Upside is that I can easily touch up myself. I had the whole space professionally done, over 6 months and it cost a lot but was very worth it

Teacheranne Sat 09-Jul-22 13:17:54

I got rid of my feature wallpaper after I went to the toilets in a rather dated social club and saw the same paper on the walls! It made me think how dated my lounge was! So now all my walls are painted white and I have added bright colour with cushions, lamp shades, pictures and rugs.

Feature wall always has nice wallpaper....All the rest of the walls are white....Dislike dark walls....xx

We are moving from wallpaper to paint in what feels like a never-ending house decoration project.

Wallpaper looks more 'done', I think, and of course you can get effects with it that can't be done with paint (unless you get Michelangelo in grin). Another thing is that Mr Dog thinks he can paper, but he's never been great at it, and as he gets older and his eyesight isn't as good as it was, he can't tell that the joins are obvious and that the edges of the rolls aren't flush. I've got decorators in this time, but he's still muttering about how he could do it himself.

Whoever does the work, the downside is that it takes work to remove paper, and even then, it's very difficult to get a wall returned to its original state for painting. When we embarked on The Decoratathon, I decided to get everywhere painted, so that future refreshes will be a lot easier. The decorator has advised putting up thick lining paper and painting over that, so that any residual glue or lumps and bumps will be smoothed. Obviously that means paying for both papering and painting to be done, but in theory it will save money and effort in the long run. If anyone has paintable walls (ours were papered when we bought the house) I would advise them to only paper them if they are certain that they'll want to keep papering in perpetuity.
