Toilet Brushes!

I don’t know about anyone else but I loathe toilet brushes, I don’t care how modern they are Joseph joseph etc, ? what is wrong with wearing disposable gloves & cloth and just clean it!

GrannyLaine Wed 13-Jul-22 11:31:11

But MaizieD quite right in an ideal world but I'm afraid good hand hygiene isn't universal especially when you have little ones around. In my book a daily wipe of those handles confers more benefit than trying to sanitise the innards of the lavatory.

I wouldn’t be without a toilet brush. I spray with antibacterial cleaner after. Frankly if people are alarmed by toilet brushes then do they not use public toilets or cash? Much more concern for bacteria and filth there!

I do have a toilet brush but have only ever used it along with limescale remover to clean the loo. I don't believe it has ever come into contact with anyone's faecal matter but obviously can't be absolutely certain. I replace it regularly and always attempt to buy the same type with a small brush on a long handle in a tall holder. So it gets binned every six months approximately and never seems to have any cling on's attached thankfully. I'm also very liberal with bleach and limescale removers living in London.

Gin Wed 13-Jul-22 13:03:21

All these chemicals being used! My newish loos seem to never get debris stuck on them. Perhaps the surface is super shiny. I think using bleach would reduce the shine! I use lime scale remover under the rim sometimes as we live in a very hard water area and that is the only chemical used. It is sparkling and pong free. I clean inside and out with water and an eco friendly multi purpose cleaner.

Chewbacca Wed 13-Jul-22 13:09:41

The newer rimless loos are so much easier to clean. Having said that, I do have a silicon loo brush and use it when needed I'm looking at you GC. For those of you worrying about the hygiene dangers of such things, you could do what one of my colleagues did and put it in the dishwasher every so often. Now there's an image to conjure with! smile

people who think toilet brushes are disgusting I presume, are the ones who shove it down the toilet on top of the #### before flushing first then flush again with bleach and brush same time as brushing.

You presume wrong then. Good idea to never make assumptions.

Calendargirl Wed 13-Jul-22 13:19:01

I agree about the new rimless toilets being so much easier to keep clean, but confess had never heard of them until we decided to refit our bathroom earlier this year.

Makes you wonder why we ever had toilets with rims!

confused

Whats with this squeemishness about toilet brushes? I've never heard of such a thing! They do a good job of cleaning the loo. Mine get rinsed under the flushing water and every so often get soaked in bleach along with its holder. Then I put them out in the sun to sterilize. The sun is a great germ killer.

Visiting someone, after lunch I tried to help load up the dishwasher and finding a metal spoon in a corner added it to the others to be washed. Turned out it was a cat litter scooper.

The question of marks in the toilet has been raised if when I use someone else's loo and leave a mark I wet some toilet paper and wipe it away and the paper gets flushed away. I always wash my hands well after using the toilet then again I wash my hands frequently in any case.

Exactly what I do! And I trained my children to do the same so skid marks are rarely a problem in my house.

Bleurgh! mokryna! Takes look brush hygiene to a whole new level! grin

Has anyone yet said where they keep the rubber gloves and cloths used for toilet-cleaning?

My money is on under the kitchen sink with the washing up sponges and tea towels. grin

Davida1968 Wed 13-Jul-22 15:21:46

Our toilet-cleaning bucket is washed and dried outside. Then it's stored in the under-sink-unit in the bathroom. The cloths are used once then thrown away. These are cheap "J cloths" or old rags, made from worn-out cotton clothing. (Nothing is wasted in our household!)

MissAdventure Wed 13-Jul-22 15:21:53

In a bucket for the cloths.
So do people build up a bucketful, or wash them in with other stuff?

icanhandthemback -. The very thought of a tongue thingie associated with cleaning a toilet bowl is so horrible it's fascinating.

grin

Those who are using the silicone tongue, cleaning cloths and rubber gloves down the toilet please come back and tell us how and where you clean them after use and where you store them. I’ve got enough to keep me awake at night without mulling this over!

They have their own holder with room to put bleach or toilet cleaner. Mine doesn't have bristles, just slightly raised bumps. Where it is flat, it is good as a scraper. Where it is silicone, it changes it's shape to cope with the smaller areas of the loo. It is easily washed under hot running water. I like it because it doesn't retain clumps of paper (or worse) when a cretin has used it before flushing!

Oldbat1 Wed 13-Jul-22 15:36:09

I use our toilet brushes every day without fail. I wouldn’t be without them. Husband has bowel cancer and spends hours on the toilet. I keep the three different brushes in a bleach mix. Needs must! I don’t want to place my hands down said toilets with added problem of cloths, rubber gloves etc and with a cancer sufferer no way is he sometimes able to deal with toiletting issues. Some folk really need to get a life if toilet brushes is all they have to worry over.

Granmarderby10 Wed 13-Jul-22 16:25:29

Those modern (expensive) rubber type loo brushes aren’t all that.- A woman brought hers back (unused) for a refund where I work.
Partner had purchased it but on consideration she decided it wouldn’t be up to the job! So I won’t be wasting money on one of those.?
For after the event I have a plastic jug in the bathroom marked bathroom only and this plus a couple of squirts of nice fragrant hand soap filled with hot water and swooosh away goes the prob then in with the brush and rinse clean in the flush.
I save the heavy duty descalers and bleach products for when I do a bathroom blitz and use loo roll and any nice smelling eco friendly product to wipe surfaces I see and touch. Tissue goes in the bin so limiting excessive flushing. Window flung open/and/or extractor on.
I don’t like the idea of toilet brushes sat in bleach because it might get splashed on some unsuspecting and well intentioned guests clothing and the basic replacement brushes can be bought for as little as 50p at hardware shops and changed as often as say, a toothbrush.
A product worth it’s salt is Neutradol The One it is an aerosol spray disinfectant for hard and soft surfaces such as toilet lid and seat, flush lever, pull cords and the like and shower curtains, bath mats, toilet brush etc.
The one in the green can smells very fresh but not noxious and gets rid of nasty niffs in a jiff? and I’ve found it very economical as a little goes a long way.

62Granny Wed 13-Jul-22 16:32:27

I am sorry I use a toilet brush , I can't think of anything more disgusting than using gloves and a cloth to clean sticky poo off the side of the loo and below the water line, for a start where do you store those gloves inbetween uses and do you wash the cloth after every use ? Do you wash it with other items in the machine? at least with a brush you are arms length away from any sh**t.

humptydumpty Wed 13-Jul-22 16:42:35

All this talk of using bleach/cloths then binning them sounds horrendously un-ecofriendly. Surely using a brush, which you only touch on the handle, is much better? Come on ladies!

SueDonim Wed 13-Jul-22 16:46:36

There are some elaborate routines here. I use an eco cleaner, a wodge of loo roll and my bare hands. If there is an area that requires more attention (looking at you, GC! grin) then I deploy a disposable Toilet Duck pad.

I’m lucky not to live in a limescale region, though.

Baggytrazzas Wed 13-Jul-22 17:02:18

although a brush fanatic until now, I also want to try to stop biting my nails and I've just thought that if I dump my brush and start putting my hand down the toilet, I would probably NEVER EVER bite my nails again. grin]
