I don’t know about anyone else but I loathe toilet brushes, I don’t care how modern they are Joseph joseph etc, ? what is wrong with wearing disposable gloves & cloth and just clean it!

I rather despair for the planet when I see all the recommendations for throwing stuff away!

The words, 'cleaning /tongue thingy/ toilet bowl would feature in my 'what nightmares are made of '

Necessary evil I think.
I only buy black ones or silicone though. My daily toilet cleaning routine is the old marigolds and disposable cloth routine but certainly wouldnt expect my visitors to don them if they needed to rid a few marks on the loo. They can use the brush provided. We know they are not nice to deal with but hey ho. As a Wife, mother and carer I have deaslt with far worse ..trust me !

I use a silicone tongue thingy. When I have cleaned under rim etc. I flush the toilet holding the the device in the flow. It does not hold excess water like a brush but I do just dry it on a couple of pieces of toilet paper and pop it back in the holder. I can't use bleach as I have septic tank. I hate bristle brushes but the silicone thingy, which initially I was sceptical about, does a great job.

We have a water softener so don't get limescale. In our last house we had loos with some sort of ceramic finish which stopped things sticking, but our new one doesn't work so well. I don't like brushes either and just put one out for visitors. But I really don't like bleach, it's so easy to get splashes on things - and it's not good for the environment.
I use detergent and an old washing up sponge, throwing it away when necessary. But kitchen paper is usually enough, binned not flushed.

MissAdventure

I think toilet brushes are a,bit like the daily mail.
Ok, as long as you don't enjoy them.

They say newspaper is good for cleaning windows - maybe the DM would be good for cleaning toilets?!

No cloths used in my toilet bowls. A good brush and a rinse does the cleaning fine. Bleach occasionally but lime scale is a problem. How do you remove the lime scale. Very hard water area. Recently had 2 new cisterns and toilets fitted and the lime scale is starting already.

I don't like them at although I do have clean brushes available for guests (which I rather hope they don't use!). Each of our toilets has bleached based toilet cleaner by it and it is perfectly possible to remove any offending smears or marks with folded toilet tissue plus cleaner. It can be flushed away afterwards and hands can be (thoroughly) washed.

Another one here for Duck disposable loo brush heads. Downstairs loo which is generally the one used by visitors does have an ordinary loo brush in but as soon as visitors gone I'm in there cleaning and hoping loo brush not used - only used once so far and cleaned, disinfected and bleached afterwards.

DianaLouise Thu 14-Jul-22 13:23:48

i noticed Home at Sainsburys are now doing new brushes for £3.00 and john lewis sells heads so you can change regularly

DianaLouise Thu 14-Jul-22 13:19:48

whenever i bleach the loo i put the toilet brush in there and also put a lovely fragrant disinfectant in the holder which helps the bathroom smell nice

123kitty Thu 14-Jul-22 13:15:58

Toilet duck and disposable pads for my loos.

purplehead Thu 14-Jul-22 13:15:31

I buy very cheap white toilet brushes from Asda (about £1.25)
and use them for a short period of time or until I see stains on them then throw them away.
I agree they are disgusting things but if you put them under the water as it is flushing this helps to clean them.
As asked in previous posts what do you do with the cloth and rubber gloves that you use,

MissAdventure Thu 14-Jul-22 13:12:42

Bleach doesn't work on 'sticky' residue (to put it politely)
It just sits on the top.

pascal30 Thu 14-Jul-22 13:09:05

I think they are ghastly and have always refused to have one. I use bleach

grandtanteJE65 Thu 14-Jul-22 13:08:54

Well, I disagree.

A toilet brush that is rinsed after use cannot be more unhygenic than a cloth. And in the interest of the environment, I do hope none of the cloth and rubber glove brigade are using disposable cloths.

And how exactly do you clean in under the rim of the bowl or far back into the outlet with a cloth? I can reach better with the brush than with my hands.

MissAdventure Thu 14-Jul-22 12:53:25

I think the point to take away here is that other people don't care who judges what.
Buckets full of crap covered cloths, poo flecked brushes, big tongues that lick it all up.
Who cares, really?

speedwaysue Thu 14-Jul-22 12:51:14

Whiff, me too!

MadeInYorkshire Thu 14-Jul-22 12:50:15

NO NO NO NO NO! I hate them - had a partner once who used it when it was full of you know what and toilet roll, then left it like that! Should've thrown him out with the brush really .....

If all else fails I would rather stick my hand down the loo to clean it off with toilet roll and then use bleach which does the job perfectly!

speedwaysue Thu 14-Jul-22 12:49:58

Me too!

naughtynanny Thu 14-Jul-22 12:49:34

Sorry to be gross, but I get really judgy on people's toilet brushes.
Firstly if you must have one, make it black and it should be in a holder.

There is nothing more disgusting than a white brush that has gone rusty or has poo remnants still stuck on the bristles.

And you ALL know what I mean and will have experienced that vision at some point. How can any woman let that happen in her home?

icanhandthemback Thu 14-Jul-22 12:45:52

Anyway, if it's good enough for the ideal home exhibition then I'm happy to use one.

I wouldn't necessarily take that as a recommendation...I have various purchases which didn't seem to work as well as they did in the demonstration. My husband groans when I return with my miracle goods. smile

For heaven's sake - it's only intestinal waste with bacterial content!
