What are the most useful labour saving devices in your home?

A sociology report listed the Washing Machine as THE most important labour saving device that helped to free up women from domestic life.

Just thinking how many we use now - some we just take for granted. So we hoover (vacuum really, few of us use a hoover). Duvets have taken over from the large pile of blankets, microwaves and slow cookers, airfryers, etc. etc. have helped us reduce cooking times. Electric mixers have made the making of cakes and pastry and bread something quick and easy. I can well remember 'creaming' marge and sugar with wooden spoon in a bowl. And also trying so hard to whip cream to a firm texture with a fork never very successfully.

Cleaning out and relaying the fire each morning is something I can remember my Dad doing, and then my Mum trying to get that alight when she came home from work in the evening - and that just to heat one small room. Central Heating, even plug in heaters have made such a huge difference.

I never scrub any floor. I do remember getting down on my knees with bucket, scrubbbing brush cloth, and soap. Not these days, thank goodness. My lovely Karndean flooring (everywhere except in my bedroom), takes a quick vacuuming and the occasional wipe over with a lovely spray type mop .(head of which goes directly into washing machine. Vacuums are said to be the single most item which has helped to wipe out bed bugs!!!

Do like to use my slimline dishwasher when I have visitors for a meal, however, normally prefer to my small amount of washing up in a bowl in my sink. But even that is so much easier with the constant hot water I have. I know some people feel that their dishwasher is just about the greatest thing since 'sliced bread'.!! And there is another great little labour saving item in itself.
And what about our 'fridges? few home now without one of these, so meat and fish kept more safely, milk not going off, butter not running everywhere. My Mum used to make, what she called 'cream'cheese with the gone off milk (not cream in it - was in fact more like cottage cheese), so that muslin bag hung on the ceiling over the tiny corner sink (cold water tap only) we had, drip dripping all through the night, then beaten up with a fork, salt added plus the top of another pint of milk. I love my fridge.

Freezers giving us not just variety but also the opportunity of so much healthier eating. Mine contains a lot of lovely fresh fish, and a wonderful mixtures of fresh vegetables and fruit.

For some it maybe some small item, the electric can opener, the easy to use zester.

So, what is your choice for the best labour saving devices in our homes.

Vacuum
Washing machine
Dish washer
Lawn mower

Don't think I could manage without these; everything else can be dispensed with for me.

Dh! Who is very good at clearing up the kitchen, loading the dishwasher, and unloading it in the morning.

Should add that he doesn’t cook, but this division of labour suits me fine.

My Husband!

My small very sharp paring knife.

PollyDolly Sat 23-Jul-22 14:31:08

My OH.

solar water heating
washing machine
dishwasher
vacuum cleaner
non-iron bedding
shower powered by free hot water
central heating
I could go on and on.

Clean running water. I spent several months without once, and it was a nightmare on so many levels, including the time it took to carry it from the nearest source.

my best labour saving decices:

roomba, one upstairs and one downstairs

miele washing machine

santoku knoves

washing up bowl with a plug that drains and the matching dish drainer rack with a swivel that drains water into my half sink. I wash the dishes and they drain and dry very quickly, not much use for my dishwasher and I wish I had not splashed out on one

a long lambswool feather duster, so I can flick the skirtings and it catches the dust plus a small one for surfaces

A microfibre dusting glove that ensures the plantation shutters are dusted very quickly

A very good steam generator iron, for ironing my fabric pre-sewing

Pure linen bedding, I love the crumple look, no iron

A big safe and stable rotary brabantia washing line

I have lots more, particularly for sewing but that is enough for now

Best labour saving decices I take to mean actual equipment not water (obviously marvellous and indispensable) or pans/knives etc.
So, I would go for:
1. Dishwasher
2. Kettle
3. Washing machine

I can do all the "functions" these perform without them but it's much easier with them.

Love it that people have written that their most useful labour saving device in their home is heir hubbies. That is great, but was really trying to see something that would not have been there for us fifty or a hundred years ago.

Not going to get into a pedantic discussion about whether or not said hubbies would have been there. Think you all know what is meant. Equally, a sharp knive. Well, think kitchens have always had one or more of those.

I don’t think knives count as labour saving devices, they have been around for thousands of years?

For me it’s the dishwasher and washing machines, they both go on first thing in the morning whilst I’m drinking my first coffee, and I can sit and enjoy it guilt free while they do all the work for me. A close third would be the electric shower, a brilliant invention.

Like others here, definitely the washing machine, dishwasher, & electric kettle. I'd also add toaster & electric food processor/beater.

I suffer from asthma and remember doing the carpet with a stiff brush, so for me first in line a vacuum cleaner. Closely followed by a washing machine, I washed twill double sheets and later nappies by hand before the launderette opened. After four years of marriage thé fridge was most welcomed. I remember once, I bought some pork in July. I learnt the rule don’t buy without an R in the month.

A maid!!!

Baggs Sat 23-Jul-22 15:23:40

Central and water heating. Electric cooker.

Chestnut Sat 23-Jul-22 15:44:14

Without doubt electricity itself. Can you imagine living without it? Absolutely nothing in the house working, not even the lights. We are 100% dependant on it in every way.

kittylester Sat 23-Jul-22 15:53:18

Electricity definitely to power my dishwasher and shower.

BlueSapphire Sat 23-Jul-22 16:01:23

Washing machine
Shark vacuum
Dishwasher
Cordless lawn mower
Lovely hot water on tap
And of course electricity.

Prentice Sat 23-Jul-22 16:01:52

A thought provoking thread Franbern
Of course, as you say, water and things like electricity are wonderful but not all that modern or devices.
My short list would be
Washing machine
Fridge
Hoover
Electric food mixer
Electric kettle

For me, a washing machine is a definite. Mine is a washer/drier, which I know some people don't like, but my grandmother would have killed to be able to put clothes into a machine at the beginning of the day, go out and come back to them washed and dried.

I would also list a Magimix. I cook from scratch a lot, and find it invaluable. It slices onions and potatoes in seconds, makes pastry quickly and easily and chops veg in no time.

I love my electric pressure cooker too. A combination of that and the Magimix means soup is made with virtually no effort in less than half an hour.

A cordless vacuum is half the work of a corded one, never mind a brush and dustpan, and I agree that the squirty mops are much better than the ones that needed wringing out.

A fridge means not shopping every day, and a freezer is a godsend for batch cooking and bulk buying to save money and time.

The thing I'd want to do without least, though, is the Internet. Shopping, socialising, learning, working, getting news, keeping in touch with family, entertainment - even things like knitting patterns are all online, and I love it.

Gymstagran Sat 23-Jul-22 16:28:48

My sons best labour saving device is his robot lawn mower. I love my washing machine.

nadateturbe Sat 23-Jul-22 16:39:29

Apart from all the kitchen and laundry appliances, Internet.

Jaxjacky Sat 23-Jul-22 16:45:38

Washing machine
Fridge
Drench head power shower
Self cleaning oven

Witzend Sat 23-Jul-22 16:55:54

If it’s appliances, the washing machine. Brought home to me when I was without one for a few days. I don’t much like washing up, but doing without a dishwasher isn’t half such a pain IMO.
