Space saving dining table

We are decorating the dining room, and I want a completely new look. We do eat in there, but now that there are just the two of us we don't need (and I don't want) a table to dominate the room, but we do need to be able to sit more than two people on it, particularly at Christmas. I don't like to plate up food, so need something big enough to sit six people with space to put food out for people to help themselves.

We also use the room as a second sitting room. There are bookcases and easy chairs in there, and it gets used a lot. It's not a huge room - maybe 14' square.

So. What I am looking for is a table which is small and compact, but opens up or extends to something a reasonable size. I'd like something sturdier than the ones with a gap for folding chairs to slot into - it will be the main eating surface in the house rather than a spare one. Oh, and Mr Dog is not a fan of anything too modern, and definitely not the 'industrial' look.

Has anyone seen anything suitable please? If it comes with chairs so much the better, as matching up chairs and tables retrospectively can be a hit and miss affair, because heights vary.

Hi Doodledog I just got notified that table is back in stock,in case you're still looking

Thanks, paddyanne. I am very much still interested in the oak version, but it is still showing as out of stock for me. How odd.

The dining room floor goes down on Friday and it would be lovely to have a new table at least on order to finish the room, but it is not available.

Would it be worth asking around for a local carpenter/woodworker who could make rectangular ends for your existing table instead of the oval ones? Or a whole new top that unfolds to rectangular?

I don’t think I have ‘esteemed dish ware and flatware’ or ‘exquisite seats, serving tables and cupboards’.

Reported.

Thanks again, everyone. I have emailed S of S to ask if they will let me know if they are expecting more of the oak tables soon, and have bookmarked the other suggestions in case they say no, or don't reply.

I don't need it quite yet anyway, as the room isn't finished and there is a lot of work to do (plastering, new flooring etc) before it will be ready to furnish.

This is the table we have. It comes in two different sizes, ours is the smaller one but it seats 6 when extended.

When we moved into our current house we bought a dining table from Next as there is only the two of us and we eat most meals at the island unit in the kitchen so only need a big table when family come which is not so often now as the grandchildren are older. It is a small square table most of the time but the top is hinged so if you want a bigger table you just lift the top and it folds out into a big table.

We have this in the kitchen. Folds to a neat square but extends to seat 6. Had the similar issues and this solved our dilemma.

If you click on the picture, it is much clearer.

Doodledog, I found this asking How to email Scotts of Stow?

Hope you can read it

We got our extending table from Dwell, they have a lot of different styles and showrooms wishing some larger furniture stores.

e-mail them .they are very good at getting back to you .I've had a lot of things from them over the years

Doodledog Fri 05-Aug-22 16:29:02

That looks perfect! It is out of stock, unfortunately, and there is no 'email us' function, but I'll keep an eye on the site to see if it comes back in, and look out for the style somewhere else.

Thanks smile

Hi Doodledog if you check that site they do a similar one in a light oak .

Doodledog Fri 05-Aug-22 14:08:43

Yes, the chairs are another consideration VS. If four of them tuck under the table, I do have space elsewhere for a couple of spare ones, but I think you're right about it not being big enough for six, which is a shame.

I like the idea of the one Paddyann posted very much, but would prefer something lighter and more modern-looking. The design is very clever though, and if there is anything out there that is similar but different it would be perfect.

I think I know what you mean by the butterfly one, Chewbacca. My daughter had one in her bedroom at one time. That's not really what I'm looking for either, as the folding chairs would feel like we were camping grin. Again, it's a clever design, but it misses the spot.

I know I'm being a pain, but as I already have something I want to find the right thing before replacing it - I do appreciate all the suggestions.

VioletSky Fri 05-Aug-22 12:53:32

I really like this one because of the chairs, you could place the two extra elsewhere and they would look nice and be comfy

I'm not sure about how it extends to the 6 seater being easy to sit around though

Just think possibly concentrating on the chairs might be helpful

No! Autocorrect!

It was a gate legged table

And it was beech not beach as autocorrect first thought.

Callistemon21 Fri 05-Aug-22 12:44:24

What about looking on retro sites?

My mother had a lovely beech three-legged table. I wish I'd kept it when she had to leave her home.
It opened up to fit several of us around it then tucked away in an alcove when not in use.

My late MIL had a table from Scotts of Stow, bought online .It looks like a console table with a drawer but can be easily extended to sit 6 it was a dark wood so dont know if thatss your style. Check out their website for dining furniture .thay may have it it different finishes

karmalady Fri 05-Aug-22 12:33:28

It looks as though my ercol artisan is no longer available but I found one which looks and works the same, in furniture village called california flip top

We bought mine 13 years ago and it is definitely a very good design. I can quickly turn and flip and it makes a large table that I cover and use for cutting fabric, as well as for guests. I shall have to give it an extra polish.

Chewbacca Fri 05-Aug-22 12:21:28

Yep, the butterfly table is about 18" deep when closed. It has 2 lift up extensions, supported by gate legs. You can have just one leaf open if it's just the 2 of you or both leaves up and 4 of you can sit comfortably. But I put chairs at both ends sometimes and that allowed 6 to sit. John Lewis has some lovely ones, complete with 4 chairs that sit snugly inside, for about £299. Takes up very little footprint. I was sorry to have to get rid of mine!

Doodledog Fri 05-Aug-22 11:41:42

Is a butterfly the same as a drop leaf?

The one in Sago's photo is similar to the one I have now, and the oval shape means that there is less space for food than if it were rectangular. It is ok for the two of us, but cramped even for four if you want to put food on it so that people can help themselves.

Thanks again for bearing with me, though.
