Has anyone dared to turn their heating on yet?

It's feeling a lot chillier tonight and the temperature is reading 17.5C in the flat and 16C in the annexe. Normally I would have put my heating on but I'm holding out! I might succumb at 17C and set the heating for 18C. I'm trying to be brave.

Have you switched your heating on yet? Are you holding out a bit longer? What will you set the thermostat for this year?

I have this last week, although I put it on first thing in the morning, while I go for a brisk half hour walk. When I get back, I then turn it off. It's just to get rid of that really chilly 'bite'. When I'm back in the house I'm usually warm enough from the walk to manage without the heating and then, in the evening, I put a chunky cardi on and I warm up a couple of wheat bags when I go to bed. This is the first year that i've noticed I can't tolerate the cold as I used to. I'm really dreading the REAL winter weather and they reckon it's going to be a long winter this year.

I weakened yesterday as it was so chilly sitting late afternoon.
It is a nice Autumn day here today and it clicked off easier than the set time.
Just twice a day at the moment.
I received an email from EDF, my supplier, yesterday with the forecast for the year based on last years use and taking October’s rise into account.
It was just short of £3,100.

I agree, this turnaround is also a culling time maw. I have a good winter coat that will be going, not tried it on yet but it will have grown too big for me grin never liked the colour on me tbh and worn it only twice. Mentally nice to pass it on as it is very warm

I decided on 19 underfloor and I shall see how it goes. I can drop half a degree at a time if 19 is tolerable. It is set as on but not kicked in yet, I should think it will in early october

Gabrielle, now that is a job I can get my teeth into. The summer to winter clothing turn around. I shall wait for a miserable day as it is a satisfying job of discovery

In the meantime I am here in a cotton top with elbow length sleeves, a camisole and a knee length linen skirt. No leg coverings. I am acclimatising, which will take 2-3 weeks bearing in mind my age. So far so good

I love that!
I “discover” things I had forgotten I had, look forward to wearing most of them again but also take the opportunity to cull those which give me no particular pleasure!
Charity shop here I come!
As to this week, jeans, shirt and a lightweight jumper or else a lighter but long sleeved jersey top. Ooh, I can feel a cardi coming on ?

We have just started our underfloor heating which increases gradually from one hour a day for 20 days. The tiles which have kept the ground floor cool all summer felt slightly less cool this morning. We have also had the reversible heating unit on downstairs first thing in the morning (5° outside) and the bathroom radiators on 20°. DH has severe arthritis pain and needs to keep warm.

karmalady Wed 21-Sept-22 06:34:17

can you tell me what is an ok fairly comfy temperature for all day downstairs, bearing in mind sensible warm clothes. I don`t mean warm but comfortable enough

My downstairs is now 21, so down degree by degree. I do think I am acclimatising somewhat but 21 is starting to feel cooler. A degree does make a difference. I have my digital thermostats on all downstairs, except utility, at 18 and am thinking that 19 would be more tolerable

I am bearing in mind that we have the extra financial grants this year. I also bear in mind that every little helps in the bigger picture of keeping the lights on in the uk this winter

Go to bed early now … my husband has now been transferred to a care home as I can’t look after him with altzheimers anymore…..I’ve done it for 26 years! So I just wrap up warmer, and when I get too cold ….go to bed! His care bill is £1000 a month so can’t afford heating anymore!

You should not be using your money to pay your husbands bills. In a financial assessment, they only count your husbands savings or half the joint ones, his SP and half any company pension. The house is not counted if you live in it.

Your pensions are for your use, along with your share of any savings and company pension.

I know how expensive care homes are as my mum was in one for two years until she died recently.

No heating, we went to a quiz night earlier, in a marquee. I had long sleeved t shirt tucked into jeans, heavy cardi and a fleece, fingerless gloves, socks with trainers. No Raynauds blue fingers, very toasty. MrJ, short sleeves shirt and a jumper, he rarely feels the cold.

Margiknot Tue 20-Sept-22 21:56:26

The heating isn’t yet in use (the thermostat will bring it on if it gets very chilly) but we did use the electric blanket the other night, and I got my wool throw out.

Just given in!
I’m waiting on a log delivery, if I’d had some logs, I would have held out for longer.

No heating on yet, but I’m wearing a thermal vest under my top. I have to wear arthritis gloves quite often in colder and damper weather. I feel the cold much more than Mr.B so I tend to layer up.

Treetops05 Tue 20-Sept-22 18:48:12

On the edge of Dartmoor we put ours on yesterday, but it only clicked in for 45 minutes total.

Nannyfaraway Tue 20-Sept-22 18:00:05

No heating on here yet. We don't tend to put it on until November unless it gets very cold

Gin Tue 20-Sept-22 17:20:02

We were both freezing at lunchtime, so on went the heating. The day is very grey with a cold wind, we are in Bucks and not the north of Scotland. I was out in the garden earlier and the tomatoes were looking very unhappy, I will have to pick them all as it really feels like there will be a frost.

Jennyluck Tue 20-Sept-22 16:47:54

Oh dear, don’t know what happened there. Put my phone down to have a cup of tea. ?
No wall insulation. If the house gets too cold it just holds onto it.
We have got a log burner, and a shed full of wood. So that might be the answer.

Jennyluck Tue 20-Sept-22 16:39:07

Not yet, but I can feel it coming. Our house is over 100 years old. So no wall

M0nica Tue 20-Sept-22 15:33:33

I cannot see the summer to winter clothing turnround happening for some weeks, possibly not until well into October, the weather just isn't cold enough yet. Anymore than it is cold enough for the heating to come on.

Still summer as far as I am concerned.

No heating for me yet either , but look after my granddaughter twice a week so will have to make sure it’s not too cold for her.

sazz1 Tue 20-Sept-22 11:10:58

No heating on yet as house very well insulated with double glazing and cavity wall insulation. Moved here 3 yrs ago and it's the only house I've lived in where it's nearly always too hot. Must be the CW insulation. ATM lowest it's been is 19C late at night.
In the winter we put heating on for an hour set at 21 but have to keep turning it off. We light the log burner occasionally but then it gets too hot very quickly.
Previous homes were always needing heating on to 21 or 22 from September onwards. Never had CW insulation before and was already here when we bought the house

essjay Tue 20-Sept-22 10:44:50

mine will only be going on when i have my 2 young grandchildren to stay at half term. for myself am quite happy with warm clothing, blanket and fleece poncho and electric blanket for bed. have also invested in an air fryer. like many other gransnetters we only had a coal fire when i was growing up so the only really warm room was the back room then when it all went smokeless fuel you had to rely on gas fires or those horrible electric fires and immersion heaters for hot water.

What we called winceyette years ago?

White linen sheets, so cold to get into…?

Ooh! You need to get yerself some brushed 100% cotton bedding it's wonderful when it's chilly!! I've got 4sets and they're so well priced, double set at maybe £30 upwards for good quality. Wouldn't be without!

Gabrielle56 Tue 20-Sept-22 09:49:32

I'm literally looking at a neighbour's flue spouting steam!! Wondering why? He has heatjng on already? He's at work all day (works for United utilities ...hmmm.....) But nope, I've broken out the woolies and leggings and today I'll be changing the clothes around to winter season (posh eh?!) And packing away all short sleeves and summer trousers etc. I'm determined to stave off heating as long as possible, our home is well insulated only 23 years old and always on the warm side so won't be too cold I'm hoping!

Anneeba Tue 20-Sept-22 09:00:22

That last us in reply to Monica. We could go down the Month Python sketch road...
