Has anyone dared to turn their heating on yet?

It's feeling a lot chillier tonight and the temperature is reading 17.5C in the flat and 16C in the annexe. Normally I would have put my heating on but I'm holding out! I might succumb at 17C and set the heating for 18C. I'm trying to be brave.

Have you switched your heating on yet? Are you holding out a bit longer? What will you set the thermostat for this year?

Candelle Mon 19-Sept-22 19:46:02

The recommended temperature for sitting rooms is 21 degrees and 18 degrees for bedrooms.

Underfloor heating here which takes a long time to warm up a room and then ages to cool off by which time it's too hot. Have settled for a cardigan instead.

I had a heated throw delivered from Amazon today £40 . Says it costs 2 p a day to use . I work from home in a wee bedroom for office . I will use this on chilly days & save the heating till I really need it .

Not put ours on either. Shorts & T-shirts put away, joggers & long sleeved warm blouses out. Fleece, bed socks & warm dressing gown for cooler evenings.
As I write this OH still got on shorts, t shirts & flip flops…. We will come to a compromise soon grin

...and the back door's still wide open for the dogs.

Heating? I'm still in t shirt and flip flops.

I put mine on this morning when my daughter and 1 year old grandson came. Turned it back off when they went, put my onesie on and fluffy socks. Warm enough now.

No I haven't put mine on yet but have put the shorts away for tracksuit bottoms and dressing gown sorts me out, but once it gets colder my thermostat will be set at 15° I'm in one bedroom bungalow and it's a small living room so warms up quickly when set, but not needed yet thankfully.

Thermostast is set to 19 degrees and so far heating hasn’t come on. House is 20 degrees so all good so far. I am in the Midlands.

Haven't ordered my oil yet in the hope the price goes down, so no c.h. on. Have two sheds full of logs from trees brought down in last winter storms, sawn up by a couple if local chaps, so can light my log burner when it gets cold enough. Also have ceramic heater for a quick warm up.
Also have an electric hwb, once heated stays warm for ages. Sounds silly, but I am more concerned about my dogs being warm enough!!!

No heating on here yet, but ready to put my under blanket and heated over blanket on my bed. It has turned cold very suddenly. I hope it's not the start of a bad winter,

I'm afraid we have...was v chilly yesterday evening and thermostat was only showing 17C! Keep heating as low as possible though and is only timed to come on a few hours a day if cold!

Blondiescot Mon 19-Sept-22 18:47:16

Wake

Don’t put it on until at least November.
Spare duvets in the evening when sitting watching tv. Warmer clothing. We pay too much already.

Same here.

HannahLoisLuke Mon 19-Sept-22 18:46:06

A couple if hours last night and have just put it on tonight. My living room is north facing and is colder than the rooms at the front. I’m keeping an eye on the smart meter though.

I read somewhere that in Scandinavian countries they carry tea lights and matches in the car in case of getting stuck in snow. I think that a tea light on a heatproof surface covered by a clay flowerpot will put out some background heat as the pot heats up. Have to be very careful. The price of firewood has shot up as more people are opening up their chimney - hope their chimney is swept and certificated - the Fire Services may be busy this year.
No heating on yet but thermal tights, long knee length bamboo socks, vest, wool tops and cardis, and fingerless gloves, and warm throws together with a ‘house hat’ are at the ready. Warm light layers for me. Good luck everyone

In N/e Scotland mine is set to come on at 19 in the morning and evening. My fuel bill was up £8 for the last month. I have done less cooking and baking.

sharonarnott Mon 19-Sept-22 18:20:00

It's way too early yet. We never put the heating on before mid October at least. We just put more layers on and I use a fleece blanket on my legs if needed, haven't even needed that yet

Gwenisgreat1 Mon 19-Sept-22 18:19:03

Not got heating on yet (North Yorkshire) got my electric blanket on and extra thermals. OK so far!

Yes sure we survived in the unheated homes, but we were children/young adults who moved around a lot more - at my age now (76) I get cold very easily and live in S W Wales in a house that is chilly inside even in the summer - the sun only gets into the ‘living/work’ room for an hour in the early evening - IF there is any sun at all - I’m trying to hold out as my next monthly heating bill was quoted for November as being at £469 a month - this was prior to Liz Truss’s announcement so I’m waiting with bated breath to see what is going to be in actuality!!! I can’t afford anything like that - that was a hike of over 300% a month on my current bills which are bad enough!
Beginning to freeze here slowly ….

I used to leave heating on all year round with the thermostat controlling whether it came on or not, then the thermostat disconnected itself from the boiler so if the heating is on it just gets hotter and hotter so I have to put it on manually for an hour or two at a time. I should get it fixed but this way we use it less as we only put it on when extra layers are not sufficient. I haven't needed it yet and haven't got yhr really warm jumpers out yet.

BlueSapphire Mon 19-Sept-22 17:51:55

Have started to put mine on first thing in the morning for a couple of hours as it is feeling distinctly chilly.
Not bothering in the evening yet, just putting on a fleece or furry dressing gown.
And still have a 1 tog duvet on the bed, but will change that tomorrow for my winter 7.5.

grannybuy Mon 19-Sept-22 17:48:32

Yes. Thermostat set at 22 in the living areas, and 18 in bedrooms. It ( underfloor ) has been on by the time I got up the last two mornings. ( Scotland )

I’m still on a fixed rate with BG until November next year but am getting into practice for when it finishes. Hot water has been turned down to eco settings and I’ve turned the heating down to 18c. It’s been on twice since April - yesterday for two hours and the same today. Felt anxious putting it on, but my elderly mum lives with us so not much choice as I can’t have her cold.
