Missing sheets?

The electric over-blanket has been finally fished out as the nights are getting a bit cooler up here in Scotland. Last winter I used it inside a duvet cover - but struggled a bit changing it for laundering. This year I wanted to try using a semi fitted top sheet (I find flat top sheets come untucked during the night!) - but am having difficulty finding anyone who sells them. I have tried online, but no luck - help please Gransnet! Are they yet another thing of the past?

My mum could have been a sergeant major, I think, on bed changing day.

Misadventure My dad (regular army) used to do the hospital corners so tight I could not move. As a nurse, I learned to put a pleat in the bottom.

My mum used to do such tight hospital corners on our top sheet that it hurt our toes.
Our arms were tucked in, down by our sides, too.

NotSpaghetti

This would be the end of me! I not only pull out the sheet at the bottom and put my feet out but I loathe beds made up with a top sheet and a duvet.

However, I do hope you find what you are looking for. ?

I was thinking exactly the same thing!

Riggi
Debenhams, Dunelm sell flat sheets.

sodapop Wed 21-Sept-22 16:09:20

I've noticed that as well Riggie flat sheets are increasingly hard to find.

Riggie Wed 21-Sept-22 13:36:46

Never seen them at all.
I use flat sheets top and bottom - as a pp says with properly done corners they don't come out. But it seems harder these days to get flat sheets in many shops.
I hate fitted sheets which never do seem to fit!!

Annofarabia Wed 21-Sept-22 13:21:04

I would take the elastic out of the top two corners of a fitted sheet et voila!

Zetacatty Tue 20-Sept-22 19:44:28

Are u in the UK? I use Absolute Home Textiles. Their fitted sheets are elasticated at the corners, top and bottom but the sides aren’t. You need to get the sheet much deeper than the depth of the mattress for a good tuck-in. Good prices too.

Diggingdoris

I use a flat sheet as well, but I tie a knot in each of the two bottom corners. Then tuck the knot under the mattress. It always stays put. Never had a problem. Just remember to untie it before they go in the wash.

Brilliant idea diggingdoris

I use expensive real linen sheets (pink) and I love them unironed, Warm in cold weather and vice versa in summer. If it was cotton then I would iron them

Ironed sheets every time for me too

sodapop Tue 20-Sept-22 17:44:45

I use a top sheet as well as a duvet because sometimes I get too hot and can turn the duvet back but still have a light covering.

Bazza Tue 20-Sept-22 17:37:14

I also always iron bed linen, they somehow never seem as clean unironed! And not so delicious getting into.

Is it possible that your flat sheet isn't big enough? We use flat sheets on our king size bed and there's always loads of overlap to tuck in and they never come undone - and my DH is a terrible fidget!!

I haven't seen the particular one you want but I started using a top sheet a few years ago & it definitely feels more cosy. And in the summer we use it with no duvet on hot nights.

I’m another one who uses a top sheet to save on changing the duvet cover. Hospital corners and tucking the sheet in with a door wedge works for me.

Yammy Tue 20-Sept-22 13:58:11

aggie

I use a flat top sheet to save changing the duvet cover
I do “hospital corners” on the foot end of the flat sheet and it doesn’t come untucked , I’m sure there’s a Utube how to do it !

I do as well, in fact, DH always says the corners are too tight. My father had been in the Navy and he showed me.

Joy241 Tue 20-Sept-22 13:55:04

I too use a flat top sheet to save changing the duvet cover so often but would love a semi-fitted one as my mattress sits inside the bedframe and is too heavy to lift to do the hospital corners. I was unable to find a semi-fitted top sheet either so just tuck as much as possible into the side of the mattress - I would not have accepted that when I was a ward sister shock

Gilmul Tue 20-Sept-22 13:38:26

I use a top flat sheet as a bottom one ( they seem bigger) or go a size up so can be pushed well in at the bottom and still have plenty of room at the top. I lie my sheet over mattress, get a wooden hanger and use it to push / tuck sheet under mattress. It’s a very handy hack I saw online !!! With a good size sheet it’s v easy to tuck in and stays in too !!! Good luck

VenusDeVillendorf Tue 20-Sept-22 13:19:54

Could you turn it over @polnan

VenusDeVillendorf Tue 20-Sept-22 13:14:52

Maybe cut the elastic from a fitted sheet at the top and hem it - that way the bottom holds and the top is free?

Marks and Spencers kids range has easy close zips for their duvets- might be an option?

I sleep with a sheepskin woolly under blanket. It’s toasty and no need for electricity.
Here’s hoping we have a mild winter

nipsmum Tue 20-Sept-22 12:28:17

I use a fitted bottom sheet and no top sheet. I find the duvet and cover are fine on the top, why make extra washing for yourself.

polnan Tue 20-Sept-22 12:03:18

oh gosh, what a lovely thread

I have looked for those sheets, we used to have them,

I like to skim iron, can`t stand creased sheets..

now changing the subject slightly, please forgive me,
but I need an electric blanket with the plug on the left hand side, cos that is where my plug in is!!

any one help?

oh I use flat sheets between my duvet, and tuck the bottom well in under the mattress.

Use nappy pins to pin a flat sheet in the position you want?
