Missing sheets?

The electric over-blanket has been finally fished out as the nights are getting a bit cooler up here in Scotland. Last winter I used it inside a duvet cover - but struggled a bit changing it for laundering. This year I wanted to try using a semi fitted top sheet (I find flat top sheets come untucked during the night!) - but am having difficulty finding anyone who sells them. I have tried online, but no luck - help please Gransnet! Are they yet another thing of the past?

Watching this thread with interest.
I remember them but had forgotten all about them Grannee

Flat top sheets can be a tripping hazard.

Charleygirl5 Sun 18-Sept-22 22:39:43

I have never heard of them!

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 18-Sept-22 22:42:19

I haven’t either.

I still have some of those, just the bottom corners are fitted - at least I think that’s what you mean. They are very useful, but I have no idea where I bought them from, I haven’t seen them round for ages, sorry.

I remember those, Grannee!

You can buy little straps to fit on the bottom corners of a flat sheet.
Not the same, I'm sure, but they might be worth a try.

There’s some on the internet, but my goodness, what a price!
Used to have them years ago, they were such a good idea.

You used to get them as one of a pair.

Grannmarie Sun 18-Sept-22 23:16:26

I don't know the prices of the company advertised in the screenshot, but if they make the sheets to measure, they might be quite dear.

Callistemon21 Sun 18-Sept-22 23:27:30

I suppose if you have a sewing machine it would be quite easy to adapt a flat sheet.

They wouldn't have to be too perfect as long as they fit.

what I would do. Make a channel to incorporate the bottom two corners and thread a piece of elastic through.

I do like a flat top sheet under a covered duvet, easier to change the bed without struggling with a duvet cover. I just push the end of the flat sheet under the heavy mattress

No need for elastic. Just sew the corners to fit the bottom end of the mattress and pull it over. If you elasticated it you might find the sheet rides doewn the bed. The elastic is only necessary when the top half is also fitted, so that the ends can pull against each other.

I use a flat top sheet to save changing the duvet cover
I do “hospital corners” on the foot end of the flat sheet and it doesn’t come untucked , I’m sure there’s a Utube how to do it !

NotSpaghetti Mon 19-Sept-22 08:55:17

This would be the end of me! I not only pull out the sheet at the bottom and put my feet out but I loathe beds made up with a top sheet and a duvet.

grin

However, I do hope you find what you are looking for. ?

Here's a jersey one in poly-cotton.

Same here aggie I only use flat sheets now as I hated ironing the fitted ones. Several of my friends do the same.

Davida1968 Mon 19-Sept-22 13:11:58

Ironing sheets? No! Life's too short!

karmalady Mon 19-Sept-22 13:32:29

jackyB I like a bit of sheet flexibility at the foot of my bed. A sheet tailored to exactly fit the end of the bed would be too restrictive for my feet, hence the elastic

sodapop Mon 19-Sept-22 17:55:30

Each to their own Davida1968 I prefer my sheets to be ironed.

Grannee Mon 19-Sept-22 22:21:55

Many thanks for all the replies! I am resisting getting the sewing machine out (which I had thought was my only solution) but the mention of hospital corners has made me think of trying out a flat sheet. Our current mattress is so heavy (think orthopaedic!) it MAY actually hold the sheet in place. Thanks Gransnet for all our help - and yes sodapop I like my sheets ironed too !

Callistemon21 Mon 19-Sept-22 22:24:18

I make hospital corners in the top sheet.

But I might get the sewing machine out to experiment.

Use nappy pins to pin a flat sheet in the position you want?
