They're back. I don't know what more I can do. I hoover and spray and have moth traps all over the place yet still they come!

Lavender oil is said to deter moths

Feels like our house is swimming in it! It's lucky I like the smell. All the various sachets, sprays and cartridges are lavender perfumed.

Never had a moth in the house for years and years have no need to use anything to deter them

I do keep the odd cashmere sweater in the wardrobe hoping that any moths will make a bee line to the cashmere and ignore everything else given that they’re so fond of cashmere….

It's more my poor carpets and Persian rugs that worry me. I can't believe how resilient the little, er, blighters are. angry

Must be the expensive stuff they go for 😂😂 my home doesn’t have anything like that in it

Yes, little white grains of rice again despite my vigilance!

We moved all the furniture in the sitting room yesterday, pulled up the rug and I vacuumed every inch, except for two heavy pieces of furniture so I expect they've made a beeline (mothline?) behind there.

After a thorough hoovering (with my lovely new hoover) I saw a small white speck and picked it up. It wiggled at me 😱😱😱

I had the same problem last year. I hoovered every bit of carpet I could reach, moving the furniture if it could be moved. I emptied the airing cupboard and cleaned and hoovered then sprayed it with Viropest protector c Super Insecticide spray.
I sprayed the carpets in every room paying attention to the skirting board areas.
I also used pheromone moth traps and moth deterrent cards from my local supermarket.
So far so good, not a sign of the little blighters but I'm ready and waiting for them should they arrive!

I had a problem with moths in the carpet. I used a spray and it totally cured the problem. I hope you get rid of them.

Aveline Tue 04-Apr-23 19:42:43

Thanks Marthajolly1 I have used that spray before. The ones I've got just now are from Lakeland Plastics. Maybe the moths have become resistant to them.

Last year I got a beautiful wool coat (Masai and over £200) out of my wardrobe and to my horror noticed a hole on the front. I then examined it carefully and there were 16 little holes up the sleeves too. I was heartbroken. Threw the coat out, hoovered the wardrobe and whole bedroom. Checked everything else and put bunches of fresh lavender and lavender scented moth killers in the cupboards and wardrobes.

We now believe what we had was carpet beetles!! I hoovered up loads of them near skirting boards and then we noticed tiny little creatures on the window sills …… striped yellow and black but very tiny. Apparently they come in from outside and lay their eggs and eat carpets, rugs, bedding, wool clothes etc. I don’t know how to add a picture but if you google carpet beetles you will see. Keep a look out on your window sills, they are tiny specks!

Regarding Moths. Make sure all windows are closed at night when you have the lights on. They can be reopened once all lights are out. Bit basic but it does work along with moth killers in all clothes cupboards etc.

Primrose53 that's awful. Will keep an eye out for those beetles but can't say I've seen any. We seem to have a few ladybirds though which is odd.

If it is that bad Aveline, I'd call a carpet specialist cleaner.

They are like a much smaller ladybird but yellow/black.

I have moths too Aveline almost impossible to get rid of. I even had a chest freezer to keep my favourite woollens in - I was using it like a cupboard until I told myself it was ridiculous. I lifted 2 moth eaten carpets and sanded the floors.
I now keep my woolies in ziplock bags.

I haven't seen any evidence yet this year but they'll be back.
The National Trust house at Newhailes was closed for years while it was fumigated and cleaned. So we are in good company.

Never had a moth until about 3 years ago - these carpet moths are very tiny.

Have you tried steaming the carpets, particularly near skirting boards?

Callistemon21 Tue 04-Apr-23 23:38:46

No, good idea.
