Window cleaner wanted

We haven’t had our windows cleaned since before the pandemic. So they really, really need doing. We are in a typical 4-bed house on an estate in a not very prosperous semi-rural town. I asked for a quote to clean:-

All fascias & sills (excluding detached garage)
All exterior windows (they are not large windows)
Conservatory roof
Interior of conservatory windows

I’ve been quoted £270 and £60 for just windows thereafter.

AIBU to think this is a vast sum? In our previous much larger 5-bed house we paid £12 every month for windows till we moved 8.5 years ago. I thought this was a little on the low side tbh.

Any thoughts?

Who is cleaning them?? George Clooney and Brad Pitt in person!!!
I’ve a big house with conservatory, French doors and porch - I won’t tell you what I pay (the window cleaner says I’m on a special rate and won’t put the price up) but the average amongst the neighbours is £15-£20 every month.

Since before the pandemic? Can you still see through them? It must be a major and pretty filthy job by now, hence the quote for the initial work which doesn’t surprise me if the cleaning has been neglected for so long.

£60 thereafter doesn’t sound too bad to me, four bed house, conservatory. I don’t know how your previous window cleaner survived!

Blimey £15 a month here
3 bed detached no conservatory

Greenfinch Sat 13-May-23 17:01:18

£32 every 6 weeks. Extended house with lots of windows. Surely it depends where you live?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-May-23 17:01:37

Lord knows where some of you live! It’s no secret I live in North Norfolk. My window cleaner wouldn’t get out of bed for what some of you pay!

Mollygo Sat 13-May-23 17:01:52

We pay £15 per four weeks, for windows, window ledges and front door. I’ve never asked for facias to be done, so I don’t know.

Georgesgran Sat 13-May-23 17:13:34

When I moved here it was a new development. I asked my old window cleaner to carry on and almost the entire estate (30 houses) signed up for him too.
He must make decent money for a morning’s work, especially using the pole system.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-May-23 17:15:46

Yes Greenfinch, it definitely depends on where you live.

GSM I certainly did expect to pay more as they haven’t been cleaned for so long. During the pandemic my DH tried cleaning them with cloth tied onto a pole. Only he would think it a good idea to clean the downstairs windows before doing the upstairs ones. 😂😂. They were not good. The conservatory is a one-off. £60 for regular cleaning is for exterior windows only.

Op

Have you asked other contractors for quotes?

Shinamae Sat 13-May-23 17:26:14

About six months ago, I paid £100 to have all the windows cleaned and the facias, they literally have not been done for years 🫣(three bedroom house, no conservatory)

I have two bays and one single which is the equivalent of 7 single windows for £7 once a month

BlueBelle Sat 13-May-23 17:35:14

I don’t live a million miles from you GSM but the difference a town can make eh !!

I paid £30 for back and front windows, two lots of french doors, all fascias and front door for my terraced house in Brighton

Caramme Sat 13-May-23 18:40:43

Goodness! I had no idea window cleaning could be so expensive. Three beds, kitchen extension, French doors, porch, etc, no conservatory. £6 every 4 weeks, and they get up ladders and do it properly. Cheshire, semi rural.

NanaDana Sat 13-May-23 18:49:10

If he's charging £60 for a four bed detached, your window cleaner should be flying the skull and crossbones from his van aerial. I know that there are regional variations, but here in rural Northumberland we're paying £12.00 for a 3 bed detached bungalow, every 4 weeks.

NotAGran55 Sat 13-May-23 19:21:04

£50 Berkshire.
2 x big bay windows, 4 x pairs of French doors, 2 x sun tunnels, 4 x Velux, 9 x 4 pane other windows.

£100 to include facias, sills and double garage.

We pay considerably too much according to posters here. However our windows sparkle and we're delighted to pay our cleaner. Tip too.

I couldn’t get past windows cleaned since before the pandemic 😱
Ours carried on all the way through it. He couldn’t afford not to.

We have a house with a lot od windows, 20 in all, with 2 sets of french windows and a wall of windows, 13f, long opening onto the garden. We pay £50.

It is a professional company with a van and a team of operatives.

GagaJo Sat 13-May-23 20:18:19

It's probably the conservatory roof pushing the price up.

The site below lists these prices for conservatory cleaning.
Interior and exterior cleaning £300 - £650

Small town in West Yorkshire with 8 windows and I pay £10 every 6 weeks or so. I can’t believe the huge sums that are being charged in some parts of the country.
Incidentally mine were cleaned last month, the first time for at least 4 years. They weren’t too bad but it rains a lot here !

glammagran Sat 13-May-23 21:22:15

MissC I can assure you I am not in an affluent area at all. There are pockets of deprivation here and the use of food banks.
