We need to buy one of these by the weekend and I think it best to get a compressor but would like to hear any recommendations you may have so that I can make a decision. I have read some reviews but there are so many!

When it was very hot the other week and humid I was surprised how much cooler my bedroom was with the dehumidifier running on the night time setting and amazed at the amount of water it collected. And I didn't have that sticky feeling when it's humid . I still have both my humidifiers running over night and always water to empty every morning.

Chestnut- mine is the same- I think it is due to the rain. I have no mould (or very little) but this high humidity worries me. It goes down in the winter when I have the heating on.

I did borrow a de-humidifier but it gave me toothache. I may look at buying my own though and seen what happens.

I live in an old property but it has never been so high before,

I blame the weather.

But maybe the pensioners don’t have mould MayBee.

Tell her that!

My daughter has got some mould in one of her rooms. She dries a lot of washing indoors and I said she really needs to use a dehumidifier but she says she won’t have one in the house because ‘it’s something that pensioners have in their homes’ sad

I have just ordered the Pro Breeze 1500ml Dehumidifier for £69.99. I don't have a serious damp problem except in one corner cupboard and I was told the damp air is gathering in that corner. This started last winter and possibly due to my turning down the central heating due to the cost! The clothes took longer to dry and maybe that meant a bit more damp hanging around than before. I hope this little Pro Breeze will deal with that. Will report back next week.

This has arrived already, but I'm not impressed. For such a small device it's very noisy like a loud fan. Also, the lead is less than 5ft long which means it has to be quite close to a socket. It will have to go back and I'll try for a larger, quieter model.

I also bought a set of two Indoor Humidity and Thermometer Monitors and my flat is reading 75 percent humidity which is much too high. It should be 30-50 percent. And this is on the 1st floor so I never considered I had a damp problem before.

I too have just taken delivery of the same Pro Breeze Blossoming it’ll be in the kitchen/diner where washing is dried. No damp or mould problem, but it’s preventative and will hopefully speed drying time, I’ve never had a tumble drier as they use a lot of electricity.

I’ve got a very small dehumidifier that I bought a while back but never used. But I’m currently using it in the pantry where I have the flour mites because if you wash the shelves they have to be made completely dry because the mites/weevils need humidity. It’s doing quite a good job in that space. I tend to have to use extension leads with all of my dehumidifiers even though they say that you shouldn’t. Tonight I’m going to do a load of washing. Will hang it up in the bathroom, put my Pro Breeze 20litre in the room, and shut the door. By tomorrow it will be dry.

Someone told me that my Tena lady will probably work as well if I put them in my drawers (the other drawers). I did mistakenly buy some incontinence pads a while back and they might work, too! I certainly don’t have any mildew in the wardrobe where I keep them!

I just use the cheap disposable ones, the ones in a tub about £12 for ten.I use one in three rooms in the house and they work well. You throw them away when full of water.

They may work well but they are dreadful for the environment. You're just adding to the plastic waste.

Foghorn, don't forget all properties are not the same in age and construction, so maybe you're lucky. Also if you have the space for a tumble drier, and can afford to use it constantly you are lucky again! Many people have to be careful to guard against black mould forming and dehumidifiers can help with that. I'm not sure why you should be mystified with that.

Why do you need a humidifier.

Basic question I know! 😄. But never given it a thought?

I too am mystified. I never get condensation on my windows apart from my en-suite when I’ve had a shower and then I just open the window and shut the door for ten minutes. As for drying washing, I really couldn’t be bothered to have it draped around so mine goes in the tumble dryer. Saves ironing too as I just fold or hang everything when it comes out still warm. Still, each to their own. I’ll probably be seen as profligate. 😀

MayBee remember to have the door to the room shut so the dehumidifier works to the full. Also if you have it on laundry setting.

MayBee70 Thu 19-Oct-23 22:13:44

I don’t usually read instructions but I did with the Pro breeze. Said it has to be in a room of a certain size: I tend to put my dehumidifier in a small room with the washing. Maybe I’ll just keep the door open? After my last dehumidifier broke I’ve resolved not to keep one running if I’m not in the house: whether I stick to it is another matter. With my weevil/flour mite problem I’ve had a dehumidifier running for a week and I’ve extracted buckets full of moisture from the house, and that’s with me not doing any washing this week.

Blossoming Thu 19-Oct-23 14:46:07

I have cheap crystal type Unibond moisture absorbers in all 3 bathrooms. They do a great job all year round but they won’t, and aren’t intended to, absorb moisture from the rest of the house or the laundry.

After reading recommendations from Which, Gransnet and other online forums I bought a Pro Breeze 12L/day model. It arrived on Monday and has dried 2 loads of washing in no time. It is on for a couple of hours a day. You can use it on continuous drainage if it’s near an outlet or emptying into a large container but that’s no good to a wobbly weakling like me. It has casters so is easily moved as required. It has a 2L tank and I can manage to empty that myself. I empty it once a day after it’s finished running. It won’t overflow, it beeps a warning and switches itself off when it gets near the top.

I had a good think about where and how I wanted to use it, accessibility given the afore mentioned wobbly weakness and visual impairments, and checked the energy use. This one works great for me but others may have different needs.

Hope this helps someone.

Just sent away for the Pro Breeze 20litre. Didn’t take out the warranty so hope I don’t regret it: I don’t usually take out warranty. Hope I don’t regret it. I saw a discount code on Facebook which I used so I got 10% off. It means I won’t have to carry my remaining dehumidifier up and down the stairs and I think it will be more energy efficient. It means I can do a load of washing when it arrives! I’m down to my last two tea towels!

Whiff Sun 15-Oct-23 22:50:40

MayBee yes . I have one in each of the cupboards my meters are in. I get mine from eBay and buy a box of 18. They take about a month to use up the white granules sealed inside. Plus have one on my shower room window ceil. I have an extractor fan but it only comes on when the light is on.

MayBee70 Sun 15-Oct-23 21:51:53

I didn’t know about those. Would they fit in a kitchen cupboard? I need to reduce the humidity in the places where I’ve got the flour weevils.

Whiff Sun 15-Oct-23 21:40:05

Oreo I have those to. But they only absorb from the area they are right next to.

My first dehumidifier was an Ebac and it broke. It put me off them. I do like the look of their latest ones but they seem to have a lot of extras eg AI and I always think the more complicated they are the more things that can go wrong. Also you have to keep them running continuously and, after I recently had a dehumidifier beak down it worries me that, if I’d had it running when I wasn’t at home it might have been a fire risk.

Grantanow Sun 15-Oct-23 15:14:12

We got an Ebac from Homebase over 20 years ago and its still doing the job. Keeps our wine cellar dry enough.

Whiff Sun 15-Oct-23 14:39:47

MayBee glad I could help. The tank is easy to get out . Make sure all the doors are shut that way it will collect all the condensation in the room. My friend brought one for her garage as it was damp . She was amazed after a few days the garage didn't smell musty anymore.

MayBee70 Sun 15-Oct-23 14:28:46

I’m going to send away for one today. My living room windows were dripping this morning. What concerns me a bit is that last time my house had high levels of humidity it was because of a water leak that I wasn’t aware of. Also, the flour mite/weevil infestation I’ve got is a result of high humidity. They don’t live in areas where the humidity is low.
