Has anyone tried a weighted blanket to help with insomnia and if so did it help ?

Well I have now 'settled ' under the blanket and finding it rather cosy and snug and I think possibly sleeping a little better.
Am now going to try folding it in half and see how the weight feels...
The adventure continues!

Good luck! Keep us posted smile

All my bedding is either wool or pure linen. I have several good welsh blankets plus a wool duvet and it is so much better to sleep within natural fibres, fibres that `breathe` and allow temperature to be stable all night. I can add as much weight as I want, or not. I cannot bear synthetic bedding

Sounds wonderful, but unfortunately way out of my price range . I am sure in a perfect world most of use would enjoy similar.

collected over a long time gangan, wool never wears out or gets mothy if stored properly and I also crocheted one blanket

Sometimes it’s a matter of cost, though - not everyone can afford better quality blankets, covers, etc.

You didn't take any of the advice on here then, Gangan2 re trying heavier bedding piled on before buying one to see how you got on, and also getting the right weight? smile

I did read various links on here and worked out what weight I would need . I chose to go slightly lighter than recommended and I could always go heavier . Hence I bought a cheap one to start .
I don't have heavier bedding ' to pile on top ' who does really in this day and age of light weight duvets?!? I certainly don't have blankets etc .

Slumberland, think

Have wondered about a weighted blanket as my bedroom is cold and I need warmth to sleep. Currently do various layers of duvet, blanket, heated throw, etc. Plus hot-water bottle. Seems to work. Can discard if I get too hot. Think I am morphing into an aged cat!

I bought one from John Lewis a couple of years ago, but I couldnt get on with it at all. Such a waste of money. I didnt like the weight and I found it suffocating. I never use synthetic bedding normally. I was so hot even in the coldest weather. I have tried passing it onto DD who has a lot of sleep issues, but she didnt like it either. Moral of story borrow one first to try if possible.

A weighted blanket (from the top supplier) worked amazingly well for my DGS who really suffered from insomnia. He now falls asleep and stays asleep really well. Phew.

Mollygo Fri 17-Nov-23 14:15:04

Actually, Sparklefizz, Yeah, I wish I’d read the “heavier bedding piled on” hint, even though the outcome delighted my DGS. I hate heavy bedding I prefer something light and soft that flops around me, preferably wrapped in a fleecy duvet cover.

Well I have purchased a very cheap one, possibly not as heavy as I should have and I am trying it out. 2.24am and I am wide awake( nothing unusual) and feeling fairly uncomfortable but I will keep trying to use it for a while! I certainly feel quite warm. .

I had one for a very short time - I couldn't get on with it.

Cid24 Thu 16-Nov-23 16:17:24

Oh yes very much helped my daughter who has had years of insomnia

Joplin Thu 16-Nov-23 15:47:21

Bought one from Lidl a couple of years ago - can’t remember the make but it was a well-known one - & I love it. Time to get it out & use it again now the nights are colder.

Otis Thu 16-Nov-23 13:37:17

I have a Silent Night one and love it. I put a sheet under it for hygiene reasons. I've had mine for 3 years now and even use it in the summer. Give it a go.

Dempie55 Thu 16-Nov-23 13:14:55

I’m sleeping a lot better since I changed to an all wool duvet, it has extra weight which is comforting and it snuggles around the body. Incredibly soft and warm, too. Got mine from Amazon, it is made in Poland from alpaca wool.

LisaAN Thu 16-Nov-23 11:23:42

I bought one two years ago and I feel safe and secure in it and sleep a lot better. Admittedly it is too hot to use during the warm days of summer. Initially I found it difficult to even turn over in bed but was used to the weight after a few nights. I can only say, if you don’t sleep well, it is worth a try.

janthegranx6 Thu 16-Nov-23 11:22:32

I've had one for the past two years and have grown to like the feeling of being 'contained' as I tend to be very restless in bed I feel I need to get a heavier one now, to regain the real improvement I experienced in my sleep when I first used the blanket.

NemosMum Thu 16-Nov-23 11:19:34

I use this one, which is lighter than most (5kg), made in Sweden and of very good quality. Didn't get away with a standard 7.5kg one! The outer fabric is a lovely smooth satin-cotton, although I put it in a duvet cover for hygiene. In winter, it goes over a 4.5 tog M&S feather duvet, and together they keep me comfortably warm. The weight does feel comforting, and it keeps the duvet in position all night.

I've got one, but it didn't work for me and I did feel very penned in by it.

My SIL who suffers from fibromyalgia says that a weighted blanket has helped him sleep tremendously.

Vintagewhine Tue 14-Nov-23 10:07:47

It's really important to buy the correct weight. I tried my daughter's and couldn't move but she finds it really helps her to sleep better.
