What sort of curtains to buy? And where from?

We need 4 sets of curtains for the front of the house, preferably ones that come to the floor. Windows are standard size and all the same. I am horrified by the price of bespoke curtains so will buy ready-made. I don't need blackout although linings would be good. The house is decorated in fairly neutral colours although we do have burnt orange in one room - so I am thinking about something with a silver theme perhaps. I'm not good with putting colours together. Can anyone suggest a seller? Don't want to go to Dunelm Mill as their quality is poor but equally don't want to spend a fortune. Also what about headings? Any advice appreciated.

Some of the curtains in my home are over 60 years old and were made bespoke and ordered by my mother for her then new house, they have been wee worth the money as the fabric, even then was expensive, the last pair I bought was from Dunelm and, for the price, I was pleasantly surprised. Try to find some furnishing fabric stores and local curtain makers, you may find the costs are comparable especially when buying such a lot of fabric.

If you shop online try Debenhams. If you want to see and feel fabrics you'll need to do the rounds of all the major sellers.

I have never been any good at sewing and I wouldn’t attempt to make curtains. I don’t have a sewing machine, it would be pointless. I am not lazy. There are other things I and many of us can do that perhaps you’re not so good at Mallin.

Ignore, midgey! Just not worth responding.
I reported it as a troll

Mallon you are assuming space, machine and expertise. Not everyone has all these things available!

I’ve just bought some lined curtains 66x90 from a website called ‘curtains curtains curtains’ for under £45 including delivery and I’m really happy with them. A bargain a that price.

I have bought most of my full length curtains from Next and always been happy with them.

Like many others I always made my own curtains but now I buy them. I like Dunelm- plenty of choice, a range of sizes and good offers when the curtains are on sale. I have had beautiful cotton lined voiles and heavier lined curtains from them. I find the quality good. I hope you find what you are looking for.

I used to make my own (I still make Roman blinds, using the best fabric I can afford) but some time ago I bought blue velvet ones from Ikea. They had those horrible metal rings but as the fabric was massively long, it was easy enough to cut the fabric and get rid of the rings. I also bought a paler matching fabric, thin (think voile) as a lining for them. Attached them at the top with curtain header tape and job done. I didn't bother stitching them down the sides - they look fine.

Thank you all for so many excellent and helpful replies. I shall read them all again thoroughly later this evening and make some notes. I am really glad I asked. Thank you again.

Have you looked on eBay? There are lovely used curtains there as well as new and unused.

I wonder why they are called "Just Linen"...
They have a lot of polyester in stock it seems to me.

I recently bought new curtains from Wayfair which are great quality and reasonably priced

Take a look at Just Linen/Dawsons who do bedding and curtains. Just click on the type you want (eyelet or pencil pleat) and a large collection will come up.

I had made to measure from Dunelm last year after seeing a friends .
They are super. I had their fitter come and put the poles up and hang the curtains, they have been much admired.
It would certainly be my first stop to look next time.

I would also disagree that Dunhelm quality is 'poor'.

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Jan-24 10:39:05

My mother was a tailor and made about 8 metres of velvet curtains with bagged hems. 🥺
I wouldn't attempt anything like that.

I did discover last year though that hem weights can now be bought in a strip! What an obvious solution!

BTW there are corner weights in my Voyage ones.

I bought 2 sets of made-to-measure curtains from here: www.curtainfactoryoutlet.co.uk/

They were brilliant - efficient, speedy, accurate size from the measurements I gave them, helpful. Can't speak too highly of them.

I found them by looking up the particular material that I wanted and they came up - the curtains were less than half of what it would have cost me for the same locally; and absolutely no compromise on quality.
