What sort of curtains to buy? And where from?

We need 4 sets of curtains for the front of the house, preferably ones that come to the floor. Windows are standard size and all the same. I am horrified by the price of bespoke curtains so will buy ready-made. I don't need blackout although linings would be good. The house is decorated in fairly neutral colours although we do have burnt orange in one room - so I am thinking about something with a silver theme perhaps. I'm not good with putting colours together. Can anyone suggest a seller? Don't want to go to Dunelm Mill as their quality is poor but equally don't want to spend a fortune. Also what about headings? Any advice appreciated.

Look at Pinterest, loads of ideas there.

I usually make mine, but fabric is sooo expensive so my last ones came from John Lewis, they have a sale on at the moment so you might get a bargain.

Do you belong to the neighbourhood group NextDoor there are usually people who will make up curtains for you. But, Oopsadaisy is right, the cost of materials is expensive.

I had my curtains made by a local lady as none of my windows are standard size and I wouldn’t know where to start. Her charges were very reasonable. Yes, fabric can be expensive but the choice is yours.

Dunelm have a huge range of curtains and the quality seems fine to me, but I have also bought some nice ones from Homebase.

IKEA have a good range of very reasonable curtains, all a good length if required to reach floor. I bought curtains fir both sitting and dining rooms and very pleased with them.

I had to have my patio doors imported from Germany as I couldn't get the width in UK. I would need double width curtains. Do any off the peg curtains come in double width?

Katie59 Thu 04-Jan-24 16:36:24

John Lewis you couldn’t make them for the price and quality is good

NotAGran55 Thu 04-Jan-24 16:45:05

John Lewis.

Headings are a matter of style preference, from a more casual look to very formal.

John Lewis ready made are good and I think they have a sale at the moment.

You could buy two pairs and have them joined?

The " Very" catalogue online has lots of curtains.
I like the eyelet headings on a curtain pole. You need twice the window width so they hang nicely.
I have some wide windows and bi-fold doors. I bought two pairs to get the right extra width and hung each pair either side, with the support in the centre of the pole, it works fine.

Unless your house has very large rooms I would choose full length curtains to match the colour of the walls.

White walls and white curtains are the best for creating an illusion of a bigger room.

My local charity shop has been a very good source of curtains .
Otherwise , I have bought them from John Lewis .
The curtains that I bought from Laura Ashley have been the best .

How many times have you bought curtains from Dunelm?

I’ve bought ready made curtains from John Lewis, M+S and Dunelm and quite frankly I think the quality of Dunelm is very good.
They do have a range to suit all budgets so I wouldn’t dismiss them.

I bought some cheap and cheerful curtains for the new garden room in my last house. They were ok for that purpose, knowing we would shortly be selling, but I couldn’t otherwise recommend them. If we were staying I definitely wouldn’t have used Dunelm.
