Please recommend a town by the sea - love watching boats
(126 Posts)Please help us. We are looking to move from Leicester to a town by the sea. We love watching boats, would like to be in a small town….want to buys a 3 bedroom house with a garden and have 300 to 350k.
Would like to be somewhere with a few restaurants and pubs and not far from a railway station….we thought we had landed on Weymouth but seems to be out of our price range….then looked at Bridlington put was put off by the tales of drugs, antisocial behaviour etc…
Any advice very welcome please. Thank you

Southsea or Gosport.
Or round the corner to Lee on Solent, Fareham, Warsash?

Don't move to Ramsgate , Margate has a lovely beach and art gallery but has lots of issues with drugs , and anti-social behaviour you can't polish s turd. Norfolk is lovely .
this is the second 'low' comment from you today on the site. bring some manners next time why don't you?

I’m not sure where you are getting your information from, but where we live in Margate has no issues with drugs or anti-social behaviour
Another vote for Whitby which has everything. Or almost anywhere in Northumberland. Too many places in Scotland to mention!
I'm biased living as I do in a town by the sea, but Torbay and its environs have pockets of reasonably priced housing within your budget.
Likewise Plymouth (I grew up there!), which has just been voted by one of the broadsheets as one of the most underrated places to visit. A quick visit to 'Rightmove' has revealed a number of housing opportunities. If you want water look in the areas of Hooe Lake, Oreston and Turnchapel.
Yes, the South West can be pricey, but set up searches on the property sites and see what you can get.

Newhaven in Sussex. Has a river, marina, port, a Fort on the cliffs with views over the bay. Along the road is Seaford with far reaching sea views and a it further along to the east is Eastbourne. To the west is Brighton with a marina, Saltdean and Rottingdean also beautiful coastal towns.
Seeing the mention of Gosport, has the Isle of Wight been mentioned? Lots of ships coming out of Southampton, ferries, a substantial yachting fraternity (not just Cowes week), smaller boats coming out of Chichester Harbour, sea fishing boats.
Topsham near Exeter in Devon
Very pretty town too
Or Salcombe in Devon. Very classy
Whitby is lovely, very historical. You could afford what you are looking for with your budget x
I love Amble. I keep looking at properties there!
Look at Broadstairs on the Kent Coast. I grew up there and my sister still lives there. It hasn't changed in years and is the most charming place but it also has loads of pubs and restaurants.
Oh to have the budget and the choice !
Sunderland has a beautiful beach with Marina. Plenty of boats, large and small and a great variety of cafes, bars and restaurants and a short distance to town centre/railway station.
You could easily get a lovely 3 bed house for £200k + very close to sea front. We moved here 22 years ago against our better judgement as we were warned that Sunderland wasn’t a particularly nice place. Those people were wrong and we’ve never regretted it. We live in a much larger house than we could have afforded in our previous location (Barnet) and we are very close to the sea, a beautiful park and local shops. The area is improving year on year and we feel fortunate to live here.

Wells-next-the-sea Norfolk very pretty I would love to live there.
As for the seaside in towns some are ok but from the sound of you I don't think you would like Hastings or Margate all kiss me quick hats and litter! And the bank holidays in Hastings you can not move for motor bikes. But good luck with what ever you chose.
Wells-Next-the-Sea is lovely, but, unfortunately, many Londoners think so too and have bought second homes in their hordes, pricing out local people as a result. To say that they are unhappy about this state of affairs is an understatement. Because of this, it may well be out of your budget.
Whitby, Saltburn or Filey on the North Yorkshire coast worth considering.
Sago, Was brought up there, There were never boats at Hornsea, its’s just a quiet seaside town. Filey lovely but don't know about boats there either. Northumberland is great, but so is Wales
Felixstowe is really nice. Lots of boats to see and a pleasant town.
Well, lots of advice, no surprise, many folk have fav seaside places! We've also seen many coastal locations round the UK, and though your price range will rule out a few places that got mentioned, I was surprised just now (I only tried 'OnTheMarket') to see so many possibles!
Do beware the difference between somewhere with a sea view, and plenty of boats to look at?! Worthing for example, long pebbly beach, lots of sea, not that many boats? I think Hastings would be like that too, I was never that keen.
As many have said, go north for better value, plus Scotland & Wales of course, but do research the social issues some have got. You sacrifice some winter daylight of course, and a few degrees on the temp scale?!
Anglesey looked a good suggestion, and right down the west coast (Harlech etc) to Pembroke and the the likes of Tenby and Saundersfoot. You'd have to check the exact situation re trains and boats, but lots of places in range at Tenby, for one example (huge sandy beach there too!).
Kent is good, if you can find somewhere that qualifies, though personally I DO NOT care for Margate (even in its revamped form!), and Essex is somewhere I've not seen much of, bar ancient visits to Southend (another no!).
But go somewhere like Ipswich (fairly unconsidered?), you've got boats galore, trains and properties in range.
Portsmouth and Soton have boats galore of course, (sailing, ferries and cruise ships!), and there are a few properties in range. Most of Dorset probably isn't, I saw a couple of places in Weymouth that were OK, but LOADS in nearby Portland, which you'd need to check for yourself, it's a 'Marmite' location.
ANYWHERE near Exeter is good, Exmouth has plenty houses that qualify, some over that estuary too, and Exeter is a TERRIFIC city. In N Devon, Barnstaple and Bideford are both on estuaries, loads of sailing boats and nice towns, and I think the former has trains. Houses in range too.
Jolly good luck!
Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Eyemouth.
Affordable, but perhaps too far north for you.
Norfolk or Welsh coasts every time, Oban is also beautiful but a very long way away
