Please help us. We are looking to move from Leicester to a town by the sea. We love watching boats, would like to be in a small town….want to buys a 3 bedroom house with a garden and have 300 to 350k.

Would like to be somewhere with a few restaurants and pubs and not far from a railway station….we thought we had landed on Weymouth but seems to be out of our price range….then looked at Bridlington put was put off by the tales of drugs, antisocial behaviour etc…

Any advice very welcome please. Thank you

Teignmouth in Devon is a lovely seaside town, well worth a visit.

Your budget will be a deciding factor, as much as anything else.

Northumberland or Filey Cayton or Hornsea in n Yorkshire

Scarborough or Whitby. Very scenic and Whitby is a port. Don't go near Blackpool. It's a dump

You will get more for your money in Northumberland. Seahouses has a small harbour as does Amble. Amble is up and coming. It has some nice restaurants. Railway station at Alnmouth on main line between London and Edinburgh/glasgow.

Come to Cromer in North Norfolk and house prices are not as bad as they are a bit further up the coast. It’s a lovely little town, fantastic beaches and a clean sea to swim in. The people here are lovely, we always say if people you meet don’t say good morning they are visitors.

It has everything you want, lots of good eating places, pubs and a railway station,

This is a town that I know well through sailing.
Unfortunately it hasn’t got a station.
It’s an apartment with view of the marina.

Sadly couldn't recommend Rhyl, my home town. It was lovely growing up there in the 50s but it breaks my heart when I go back now to see it now, so run down. I think this is the case with many seaside resorts.

Felixstowe on east coast is affordable, blue flag beach, has a railway station and if you like boats, there's are two seasonal foot ferries foot ferry to Harwich and Bawdsey across the Stour and Deben estuaries and you also have the Orwell estuary as well which as moorings. There's quite a few sailing clubs in the area.

Unfortunately lots of places that have been suggested are not doable on your budget. My friend just moved to Dorset 3 bed house not near beach starting price £450000, also Norfolk is expensive. Further up north would work with your budget. Good luck

Felixstowe - in Suffolk; there's lots of shipping into the docks (there is a viewing area nearby) also it looks over to Harwich where the ferries go to the Hook of Holland. At the other end of Felixstowe (Felixstowe Ferry) there's a lot of sailing, also a golf course. Nice small town, railway station, the Landguard Fort area is a nature reserve and has interesting plants plus bird watching.

Sad thing is the landscape will change in a few decades sad

Goodness sweetcakes , I fear that your prejudices are showing: I think that your rather unpleasant take on Margate might be somewhat out of date. However, I repeat my previous post - £300k is unlikely to secure the OP a three bedroomed house here.

pinkquartz Fri 01-Mar-24 13:41:30

Not viable for Dorset, which is way too expensive sadly.

Any coastal town in southwest is now overpriced.

I am originally from Gosport in Hampshire. It is a peninsular so lots of water and boughts. Gosport is across Portsmouth Harbour by ferry if you are travelling from Portsmouth. It's a short walk from the Portsmouth side to Portsmouth Harbour station too.

I lived in Gosport until I was in my 50s and relocated to Eastbourne to take care of a friend. I'm now wanting to move back home to be with my family. I miss Gosport and the boats every day

I suggest Northumberland. Beautiful County with loads of areas to choose from and your budget would probably be okay. Recent reports though are suggesting Northumberland prices are on the up due to influx from Scottish resident moving to avoid the high taxation. Don't hang about!

St Annes, nr Blackpool is lovely. My sister moved there many years ago, and loves it. No idea on house prices though.

It's not just the Scots. We have a significant number of Londoners moving up here. They all want a sea view!!!

How about Felixstowe? Largest UK Container Port with viewing point, so lot of (very) large ships and then there is also a large sailing club for yachts and small boats.
There is a good variety of restaurants and crime rates are low
Suffolk is a beautiful county with a wide variety of landscapes and picture postcard villages.

Cleethorpes has some 3 bedroom terraced properties in budget with Humber Estuary views.

Unfortunately this one is SSTC

Personally I'd love to live in this building if I could afford it but probably not this flat on the ground floor.

Margate and Hastings are a bit of that but also very trendy so there’s a very co temporary atmosphere .. there is litter and there are a lot of seagulls that raid the bins !

Boolya Fri 01-Mar-24 14:50:22

North east coast - Saltburn, Seaton Carew, Cullercoats or my favourite = Scarborough.
