My front door has to be locked after
closing. I keep my keys on a coiled plastic key ring, with a clip on the end. I clip it to the zip puller in my handbag. No more searching for my keys or accidentally pulling them out with something else. They are always there and very safe.

Get a key safe

My new front door has a lock that you have to lock on the way out, so I always have my key with me. Before, I hid it in a box of screws in the shed, the shed had no lock. Now my sister in the next village has my spare in case I lose mine when I'm out.

We keep a spare key in the barn opposite our house. I would always want someone to be able to access the house to look after the dogs in the event of us being involved in an accident or otherwise detained. The crime rate here is practically non existant.

I’ve been reading this with great interest as I had a scare last week. I took the dog along the lane and took the spare key as my bundle of keys seemed to big . The spare has a fob on the top. I came back a I just had the fob and key was missing. No phone and it had started to rain. I traced my steps and found the key , luckily I hadn’t gotten far . I did find it but it’s made me think on about a outside spare.

I’m very scared of being locked out, so I have a key safe , it’s out of sight from the street. I also have a spare key in my handbag, zipped away safely. And, yes, I’m forever checking that I’ve brought the keys as soon as I leave the house!

Making sure you have your key when you leave the house is not the problem, you can lose keys whilst being out.

Before I had decent neighbours I used have mine in a small jar buried in the garden.

Very easy to prise the key safe boxes with a screwdriver, I had to do it with my mothers.

its the camera outside the house? because if it ism they smash that first and you are no better off.

What you can do is buy a little Lock and Lock box (MUST be lock and lock) and use that to bury or hide a key outside. oil the key first with something like sewing machine oil, something that stays oily. They are genuinely damp proof. I have got a key buried a foot deep somewhere on my property in case of extremem need. I have moved it twice, its been there around 8 years and is still shiny.

Definitely a key box until you get to know your neighbours.

One of our friends had a lock box fixed to the wall and the thieves hammered it off the wall and the key fell out. It was also the same with one of those expensive camera doorbells, if it is fixed to a wall then it can be knocked off the wall.

I used to leave a spare front door key with my next door neighbour but found she kept it in a bowl in the hallway with my name and address on it. So if anyone broke into her house they could also break into mine.

The two keys for the back and front doors are fastened to a lightweight chain on the inside pocket of my cross body bag. The keys never, ever come off the chain that way I never lose them or forget them.

I have a camera on my door. It records people as they come through my gate. I’d know who knocked it off the wall as I think would be the same for most cameras. It records straight onto my phone and stays there.

I have a keysafe like others (same as that pictured). I have in the past put a key to the garage in there, and kept a house key hidden in the garage.

My Dad, many years ago (before the invention of keysafes) got a small jam jar, drilled a hole in the lid, fed a piece of string through the lid, with the house key safe in the jam jar and tied the other end of string tied to a drain cover.

My mother needed a keysafe for her carers/emergency people to access. It was not visible from the road located behind a drainpipe. Now we have one but it is located inside the electricity meter box. The plastic key for the meter box is in our postbox... which we do not lock! We used to bury one in front garden but water seemed to get in to container.... and you would have to remember where and have some digging tool! I have a key attached to my phone so usually have that on me when going out.

I have a key safe for if I ever locked myself out.
I left it on the porch floor but yesterday a friend came and put it up, when he finished he said no one would be able to rip it off as he'd bolted it on so well.
Haven't heard of any key safes being prised off walls

I have the same method as someone mentioned above - spare key is in a sealed glass jar buried in the garden. No burglar is going to dig up the entire garden looking for a key that may possibly be buried!

You can search for a police preferred key safe which is made to a good standard.

That’s interesting ann. We are strongly advised to have a local designated key holder and ensure the development manager and careline team know who they are. Our locks can be opened by a master key held in a safe in the office. It’s never occurred to me to explain this to our contents insurers. I will at next renewal in a month or so.

Any semi determined burglar will make short work of a key safe. The only fool proof way to not get locked out is to make sure you take your key with you.

Get into a routine before you leave the house. Write the word "key" and leave it by the kettle or somewhere you're likely to look before you go out. Or invent a "code word". For example, I say the word "Marmite" out loud in the hallway every time I'm about to leave. This has become second nature and it prompts me to check my keys and make sure I've shut windows etc. It really does work for me.

Yes that is exactly what I thought annsixty. Also why I never step inside my neighbours home when they are away

I believe that if you leave keys with a neighbour , in the unfortunate event of being burgled, it could invalidate your insurance claim.

I decided not to give my neighbour my spare key as he labelled all the keys and hung them in his hall. I moved since then and have wrapped a key up and buried it, close to somewhere I can describe, easy to dig out. My AC all know where the key is, although the nearest AC have my key

I have my neighbours key, I only ever open the door and pop parcels into their hall, I never enter their house. I do it as a favour as one of them is terminally ill and they need to be out a lot

Our neighbour holds a key for us. I put it on a "sparkly" keyring, so that she'd know it's ours! (She's quite a "pink/sparkly" sort of a person, so this would go unoticed in her home.) We hold a key for her and I have it on a similarly "memorable" keyring.

Or lordy, some people have no common sense whatsoever, which is why I won't leave my precious house key with a neighbour. 🤦‍♀️
