Thinking of getting a steam mop but don't know much about them. If anyone has one do they actually clean the floor and carpets or just kill germs?
OH wants one that will clean the oven (don't ask)
If anyone has one can you recommend a good make that is easy to use. OH and can it be used on laminate, wood floors and a pure wool rug?
Thanks everyone

Yes, it is the only thing that cleans my glossy floor tiles without leaving streaks.

I was given a Shark steam mop by a friend who didn’t use it and it really has been a godsend. No more carrying buckets of water or squeezing out floor cloths or bending down.

I do not have carpets but would not think of using a steam mop for cleaning those.

We used to have one for tiled and stone floors, but the instructions said not to use it on wooden floors as it could lift the seal. For these I have a spray mop with microfibre heads. (one "normal" and one a bit more abrasive). The brand is Bona (available all over the place, including Lakeland) and you can buy large refills for the bottle that clicks onto the mop. I bought this on the advice of my son who is a perfectionist with his wooden floors.

I have a steam mop a Flash Speed mop and an ordinary mop with a Vileda microfiber mop head. To be honest the one I use the most is the ordinary mop and bucket. I can put ultra hot water in the bucket and a nicely scented Cif Ocean liquid cleaner. That is fine for my kitchen floor which is sealed vinyl. However I do alternate between cleaners and a good steam clean always leaves the mop heads filthy so must be, good. I find the Flash Speed mop has a lovely scent but it is a cold clean so for quick cleans it's fine but I wouldn't use it regularly as I prefer a really hot wash on my kitchen floor. For the laminate leading out into the garden it's always a regular mop and bucket job.

I've had one for years, would not be without it, particularly with a dog in the kitchen.

I have 1 and have had a couple of others, firstly they are very good if you use every day, mine is an automatic steam shark one, i love it as being like many inflicted with a lot of pain a mop was killing my back. I had the pump steam first , which was good, but this one is superior heat controls and an attachment which refreshes can lift the pile a little on newer carpets. the h2o i had to send back very dissapointed in , very fiddly set up when you've osteoarthritis

I have owned two but didn’t think either of them cleaned the floors well. I find the flash mop far more efficient and so much easier to use.

Tried my Vax steamer several times on carpets, upholstery, bathroom grouting and tiled floors - RUBBISH! No effect on grouting or upholstery, leaves carpets very wet and tiled and laminated floors are much easier and cleaner with a mop and bucket.

I have had a few, yes they do break and unrepairable but I now don't spend much on then.
Don't uses that much but good on tiled floor.

It has it's uses, does a reasonable job on our ceramic tiled floors but tends to push the dirt into the grout. I've just scrubbed the kitchen and snug floors and they look so much cleaner!

I am on my third one and very happy with latest which is a Shark model with a good sized mop pad that can be flipped to use a fresh side during use and without having to touch the pad. It is very sturdy compared to cheaper ones I had previously. It is used on ceramic floors of kitchen and bathroom and on vinyl of hallway. I do put some diluted kitchen floor cleaner in a spray bottle for bit of extra umph on troublesome bits.

I sold out when we had the kitchen tiles replace with kardean flooring - that should never be steam cleaned. As for the oven, I have a man come in and do it now my kneeling days are over.

We have one which is used regularly to clean our tiled floors. i have about 6 covers and I sometimes 3 or 4 when doing the whole house. The covers go in the washing machine when used.

I have had mops galore over the years. Stopped with the steam mops a few years ago as shape of steamer heads couldn't get into narrow spaces or awkward corners. Using a simple spray mop almost daily in kitchen, couple of times a week in bathrooms, toilets. I do also get down on knees and scrub all the tiled flooring every two months (on a rota). Such a difference, and shows what I think as cleaning with a mop as an almost waste of time. The amount of dirt in the water when scrubbing is unbelievable. I am on my own, so no tribe of kids or animals trailing muck in.

A vote for the H2O here. I've had mine for about 5years - love it.
Its got various fitments to do rugs, windows, oven, etc.
It's great on laminate because it uses very little water, so doesn't cause it to swell (like my ex-tenant did by 'swabbing the decks' with gallons of water) in my kitchen, necessitating replacement of the flooring.
As a previous poster said, the H2O itself isn't cheap but you can sometimes get a good package deal (especially through the likes of ideal world etc).

I use a mop and bucket but it’s getting such hard graft lately. Have a stone floor in a large extended kitchen with underfloor heating. Any suggestions as to an easier less arduous alternative ?

I’m chortling at the idea of wearing a bonnet whilst mopping! 😂😂

I've got a steam vacuum cleaner, a different beast to a mop. It's a Polti, an Italian make. It produces dry steam and will clean ovens etc, and unblock the sink, but also will sterilise mattresses, clean and dry windows, clean curtain etc. It has a tank which heats water up to a high pressure and there are various safety features. If you get one, make sure you can refill the tank without waiting for the pressure to release as it takes ages, although, by the time you've finished the first tank you will be so hot and bothered you'll want a sit down. How mine works is you spray the steam using whichever nozzle suits the job, then vacuum up the muck and water leaving surfaces fairly dry. Mine also uses another water tank as a dust filter. It's easy to clean floors but it is heavy, I wouldnt try to vacuum the stair on my own s with it.in the videos advertising these products, the model housewife is cool, calm and collected while she drifts about effortlessly cleaning everythjng jn sight. Don't be fooled. It is still quite hard work. John Lewis sell them, or they used to if you want to have a look. I've also got a regular vacuum and 2 roombas, so don't use the Polti for every day

I bought one. Don’t use it. Prefer old fashioned ways with squeegee mop.

I sold mine on ebay, because I have a very temperamental laminate floor.

You only have to say "water" and it starts lifting up.

I had one, Hoover, too cheap at £45 I thought when I got it.
It stopped delivering steam one month after its 1-year guarantee ran out.
I did like it for the non-slip vinyl floor in the bathroom. But I haven't bought another.

We have a Shark steam mop which cleans our laminate floors downstairs beautifully. My daughter recently bought another Shark which hoovers the floor while steam cleaning them . It has a tank for clean water with cleanser init and another tank to collect the bits and dirty water from the floors . It’s very lightweight and makes spot cleaning after the dogs very easy . It also has a self clean button and sits on a charger so is always ready to go .

Mine steam mop is going to the local charity shop! It has ruined the grouting on the bathroom and shower room floors and my karndean hall flooring has started to lift! My dd on the other hand loves hers!

MissAdventure Mon 08-Apr-24 20:46:09

Oh no!

Shandy3 Mon 15-Apr-24 13:50:54

I have an H20 one, it's great, cleans my tiled floor like I've never been able too, without sore knees!
You can use on wooden floors etc, but you use it slightly differently so read the instructions.
Easy to use, a hand held part splits off from the main machine making it very versatile.
I just wish I'd bought one earlier!
