Coloured sanitary ware

Goodness knows why but I found myself thinking of bathroom suites we have had inflicted on us since we married in 1970.
Our first (rented) flat in Greenwich had a pink suite - pretty yukky but I don’t remember being too bothered, probably because that bathroom (it was an attic flat) was so bliddy freezing you’d make a point of being in and out at the speed of light.
Then a flat in a Thirties block in Richmond, blessedly unmodernised with a huge white bath but rather public lavatory style white and black tiles round the walls.
Another pink suite in the first flat we bought , cheap and flimsy like everything the developers had done in the conversion. Our first house had a yellow bath and sink - what was it about coloured suites in those days? Then when we moved out of London, we had to live with Sun King (I think it was called) and avocado in the downstairs loo. The current house had a white suite in the en suite but a pale peach (complete with gold taps!) in the family bathroom until the day we could afford to redo both and replace everything with WHITE.
My old school friend had a dark red/wine coloured suite which was dreadful for showing tide marks and an aunt simply had the pale blue suite dumped on her front lawn and a new bathroom fitted before she would even move into her new house.
What was your worst colour?

Oh yes - carpets in bathrooms! I’d forgotten about that! What a revolting idea that is now 🤢

First one was a vast, white enamel bath that emptied the water tank just to half fill it. Within 5 minutes the water had gone cold so you had to be quick. Second was a cheap plastic avocado suite that the builder had apparently installed in every house on the new build estate. He must have got discount for bulk buying. 3rd was the worst. Chocolate brown suite which included a square toilet and a square washbasin and 4"x4" chocolate brown tiles on every inch of every wall. For good measure, all of the paintwork was also chocolate brown, as was the shag pile carpet. I have white sanitary ware now.

I was wrongly intrigued at the thought of colorful sanitary pads !

As for baths it's been white all the way. We've had original white enamel baths. I adore the old baths. So big and deep.

Rented flat had a turquoise suite, I think I thought it was alright at the time, back in the dim and distant late 70s, not a decade remembered for good taste. Have replaced several bathrooms over the years when we moved to a couple of our houses, they were from the time when avocado suites were vogue, complete with matching tiles that looked like varicose veins. New bathrooms installed were always white! white! white! as Humza is prone to utter in a rather derisory manner.

When we first moved to this house over 40 years ago we refurbished the bathroom. We had pink tiles, floor to ceiling and a pink bathroom suite. The colour of the suite was Pompadour Pink. I bought dark pink towel. I loved it. Yuk.

An all pink bathroom with navy shag pile carpet (which went all the way up the side of the bath) upstairs and a pale blue downstairs. We lived with it, apart from the carpet, because we had no money. Next house white bathroom and avocado shower room. We changed them both. This house all white but in shocking condition so we had to renew anyway. I would not have anything but white by choice.

My mum and Dad had an avocado bathroom, when they died and I came to sell their house the property man assured me I d never sell it with an avocado bathroom so I had a new white bathroom put it We sold it and the first thing the new people did was take out all the lovely new pristine bath, washbasin and loo 😱☹️ my heart and bank account cried

Mil loved her pink bathroom suite so had a shock when she moved to a newly built house and could only have white as coloured were no longer available. Then she wanted pink tiles. I must have gone to a dozen tile shops with her before finally finding a salmon colour that she settled on.

Oh yes that's brought back memories we had a burgundy suite when the children were small. We were trying to sell the house and it was a nightmare to keep clean even water marks looked awful.
Progressed to mocha after that then turquoise, pale blue and thankfully white.

Avocado - remember them? Yes that was us 😂

ginny Mon 06-May-24 17:05:59

Our first house had a pale yellow bath etc. That had to stay until we move and our next house had a pink suite. We changed that for a champagne and yes, we had gold tapsblush.
We now have a white suites .

Moving into a brand new house I chose primrose for downstairs loo and avocado for the family bathroom. Someone who knew the buiders of our house asked me if I could see the outline of a chicken in the tiles ( white and avocado ) and I could. We viewed a house that had a dark blue bathroom suite. We hated it but DH asked the people who bought it how they lived the suite and they said they loved it .

I can remember my Mum and I 'swooning' over an avocado bathroom. We thought it was the height of luxury then! Late 60s early 70s I think

We had a bath like that Theexwife when we moved into our current house 25 years ago except that it was navy blue and very difficult to clean!

Theexwife Mon 06-May-24 16:18:58

We had a pinky beige, think it is called champagne, it was a jacuzzi type corner bath, far too big for the room and took ages to fill.

The difference between ware and wear shock

lemsip Mon 06-May-24 16:16:27

can't stand that word 'sanitary' for bathrooms though I know it's correct term.

from title I thought it mean't sanitary pads which I do believe you can get coloured these days and where I feel the term sanitary belongs. odd aren't I

Esmay Mon 06-May-24 16:16:19

At one stage we had a pale blue bathroom suite which didn't match .
I saw many Avocado and Sunking bathroom suites when house hunting.
The one house that I particularly liked had a huge bathroom suite in maroon .
It was ghastly .
An aunt had a particularly lurid flat snd her pride and joy was a her pink bathroom suite -the basin being shell shaped .
She loved to crochet all sorts of toilet roll and loo seat covers with matching rugs .
But fashions change , don't they ?
White has been in for a long time .

tanith Mon 06-May-24 16:14:25

In the 70s my then husband a plumber thought tan would be a good idea, it was awful then we had avocado also awful. Thank goodness mine are now sparkling white.

We had all the colours of the rainbow in our last house, when we moved in. The cloakroom was Maw’s aforementioned Sun King yellow. That had to be replaced almost immediately as the cistern cracked. We were short of money and got someone to do a cheap and cheerful job. I didn’t notice until after it was installed that the loo and basin weren’t white but the palest mint green. I painted the walls a stronger mint green and had a voile curtain of a similar colour so the sanitary ware then looked white against it. It was a bit like being in an aquarium, though! 😂

The main bathroom was a dark Pacific blue and the ensuite was burgundy. I was more than happy to see the back of those.

Charleygirl5 Mon 06-May-24 15:39:11

Rented properties thankfully were all white, it was only when buying we ended up with Avocado which I hated but could not afford to change. The next house was a pale shade of grey but thankfully my present abode is white although the bath is long gone.

Bridie22 Mon 06-May-24 15:37:00

Green one here when we moved in, had to live with it for awhile until we saved up for white suite !

grandtanteJE65 Mon 06-May-24 15:32:42

My childhood home being in Barrhead the home of Shanks, had ordinary white Shanks toilets, hand-basins, kitchen sinks and wash-tubs.

So did every other house I was ever in until I was 7, although most houses had a more modern version of Shanks than our Victorian water closets!

Aged 7, I was invited to the home of a school-friend, and even at that age, I realised that her father's salary must have been much larger than my father's. They had CENTRAL HEATING so their house was warm, unlike my home. My amazement knew no bounds when I was shown into a bathroom with custard coloured ware! Now why would anyone choose that ?

In rapid succession thereafter, I saw a horrible shade of pale green bathroom ware, pink with matching paper! and that fortunately was apparently the Scottish range of bathroom ware.

It all impressed me as being absolutely hideous, and I am happy to say that every flat or house I have ever lived in has had white sanitary fittings.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 06-May-24 15:28:58

Having known nothing but white sanitary ware, we were keen to have something coloured in our first home when we did it up. Pale blue. Then in the next house it was avocado, all the rage. Next house - a really pretty shade of pink called rose - the builders merchants weren’t keen on having to get it in specially after I’d seen it in a magazine and nothing else would do. In the next house we chose pale grey. Now of course it is white - everything comes back into fashion eventually!

I have only had white suites, but our first house had an old enamel bath, but so that I could make it look more modern we had a side panel and moulded shelf at the side that you could put your soap and shampoo ect. I think that was avocado. We painted the walls a similar colour too, when we replaced it we went for white suite again but the sink had a Grecian pattern around it and gold taps. Peach and cream tiles.
