Make-up brushes. What to do with them?

I watch women on TV applying brushes to their faces but I haven't a clue what they are doing? (Think The Apprentice when the girls get up in the morning.) Surely powder is a thing of the past isn't it? They seem to have different sized brushes but what on earth for? I am definitely missing something. Then I read we need to apply primer after moisturiser. Primer? That's what my DH uses on the walls! Where am I going wrong... and can I look 20 years younger if I somehow apply brushes and primer to my face? Does anyone on here do it?

I’ve wore makeup all my life, i feel undressed without it. Ppl say i don’t look my age but yes i also go from primer to setting spray lol like other have said watch YouTube tutorials for over whatever your age sit in front of a mirror and follow them or watch qvc where i buy most of mine from. I also straighten my hair too nothing wrong in taking pride in yourself. I do look at some women and I think how sad that they letting themselves go. My gran wore lipstick and blusher until she was in her 90s she said she did it because it made her feel good and my grandad would be watching her and saying you let yourself go lass lol

If primer means face cream then I apply that in the morning and then a light foundation. I use my fingers to do both. That's the sum total of my make up routine, unless I'm going somewhere special when I apply a bit of very subtle blusher with a brush. I only use products that are non animal tested.

Primer is an extra layer of gunk used after serum and moisturiser but before foundation! It’s meant to smooth the surface of the skin to provide a smooth base for makeup (think Polyfilla!)

Moisturiser only nowadays and if I'm going out anywhere then some mascara to make me look more awake and a touch of clear lipgloss. Feeling most inferior after reading posts!

I definitely feel better after putting my face on. Using the correct type of brush makes things so much easier, and look more “finished” too. I always use a lip pencil to stop lipstick doing that awful feathering ! Not sure if it makes me look younger, but I know I look more human !!

Lucky to have good family skin, and without adding anything else we all look younger than our years.i add moisturiser if i remember or one with an spf if going outside.Maybe a bit of light powder occasionally if off out at night, do use nivea rose or spf lip cover, if out or is sunny.Thats it really.

Nannan2 Fri 17-May-24 13:21:31

Knspol- oh dont feel inferior please- if you dont need it why shove all that extra gunk on your face?- a lot of it probably just blocks up the pores anyway.

Having cleansed and applied serum, moisturiser and sunscreen it takes me five minutes to apply makeup. First face primer to give a nice finish and eye primer to keep eye makeup in place. Then a light taupe eyeshadow on lids and a darker greyish eyeshadow in a very fine line under lower lashes. Then a fine line of grey eye pencil between and just above roots of top lashes and finally some tinted lip balm. All very natural but makes a big difference. In the winter when my face doesn’t have colour from the sun I might put a little concealer under my eyes if I’m looking tired, and if going out I might apply just a little mascara and possibly lipstick. Less is more when you get older but none at all is only for the naturally beautiful (which I am not!).

If you're near a John Lewis, they run a service called The Beauty Society. It's free, in-house make-up artists who you can book an appointment with and they help you find what you're looking for/interested in/need help with. It's impartial so they scour the shop floor for you looking for items that actually suit your skin tone, type etc. And they'll help with anything - brushes, foundation etc. I've booked quite a few of these as it means you stay clear of the individual beauty counters who obviously only sell you their products and you get brilliant service and honest impartial advice. I've booked it for foundation matching, a new blusher and I've learnt so much during those appointments.

You have all made me feel so lazy! I feel life's too short for all that palaver! All I do is apply a L'Oreal Revitalift SPF 50+ fluid in any weather, as directed on my medication, then a smudge of eye liner and mascara. I also leave my wavy hair to dry naturally. blush

Make-up brushes are used for applying eye-shadow if they are small, and pressed or loose powder , or rouge or blusher if they are larger.

Many of us feel they give a smoother finish than a powder puff, or your finger-tip for applying eye-shadow.

I am surprised you have managed without them.

There are companies that will assessvyour skin tone and match your makeup to suit. Apparently your skin tone never changes so advice shoukd be lufe ling. Also, they will match material colours again to your skin tone giving you a swatch of matetials in the relevant colours. Dont know if dying your hair has any imput in the colour matching.

The matriarchy really needs challenging on this one! All that time and money because - what? We look like what we look like. Rejoice!

Using a primer will change your life, lol. I use one, and brushes yes

What does a primer do actually?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 17-May-24 15:46:52

If you use foundation it apparently keeps it in place and makes it easier to put on. I don’t like foundation but use primer because it gives a nice soft finish and blurs lines and pores. I also use an eye primer which keeps eye makeup in place, stops it fading and travelling !

I take the view that when nature desists, I assist nature 😁

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 17-May-24 16:21:29

Quite right. I don’t rejoice in my natural looks and never have done. A little time and money make a huge difference.

I never wore anything other than eye makeup and lippy even when young. I went through a phase of having my eyelashes tinted as I hated applying mascara and often forgot I had it on so rubbed my eyes and ended up looking awful.I haven't bothered with anything now for years. My DD tried to get me to wear foundation for my DS's wedding. She took me to a big store and had me made up proffesionally. I spent about £20 on the stuff they used but then on the day couldn't apply it at all. I looked and felt awful so I washed it off and went bare skinned as usual. I won't be trying that again!
As for looking young or old, most people seem to think I'm younger than I am. Some people are surprised I'm retired and on a recent visit to A&E the nurse said she wouldn't have put me at the age I am so it doesn't seem to be doing me any harm. The only thing I do is stay out of the sun if I can as I don't like the heat. That has probably done me more good than anything over the years.
Incidentally while in A&E I saw a woman who I thought looked really ancient and doddery, then overheard her give her DOB - she was 11 years my junior!

I think I must be allergic to the type of bristles used in make-up brushes because whenever I've used one (or had one used on me at a salon) my face and eyes get itchy and blotchy. If I can't use my fingers then it has to be cotton wool or a cotton bud.
Having said that I very rarely wear any make-up!

I love how all you (glamorous?) women say "it only takes a few minutes".
I find that even drying my hair with a hairdryer is so tedious that I haven't used one for at least 40 years!

My lovely hairdresser actually gave me hers as she'd bought "newer models" for the salon... eventually my daughter discovered I'd used it only once (out of guilt) and relieved me of it!

Aveline Fri 17-May-24 17:30:49

I always used to wear make up but now I just don't. I hate the feel of greasy gunk on my face. I moisturise when I remember but don't find it makes much difference.

NotSpaghetti Fri 17-May-24 17:46:39

I confess to moisturising face, neck etc morning and night.

And legs/arms after the shower.

BlueBelle Fri 17-May-24 18:05:10
