How to Stew Prunes

I have in the past simmered them gently in earl grey tea and a vanilla pod. Soak them first if they are the consistency of teddy bear noses. But lately I prefer to buy the ready to eat ones.

Admit that I only buy the tinned ones now and again so no advice to offer.I love the juice in them.

I only buy organic prunes btw, a kg at a time. You cannot get those in tins

I get the old fashioned dried prunes, I don`t like the squishy soft ones, artificially plumped up.

Into a pan with enough water to cover plus some cinnemon and vanilla. Soak a bit and then stew gently 5 minutes. Switch off and leave to cool with lid on

I make enough for 4 days and the juice thicken slightly when stored in the fridge

Just about cover them in nearly boiling water to plump them up. I don't cook them.
I do rinse any vegetable oil off first.

If you wanted them to disintegrate then cook in water.
No sugar needed.

Have found prunes are very poor at the moment. Many just fall apart as they soak instead of plumping up.
If you cook them I think they will be nearly a puree.

I buy soft dried prunes to cut up on breakfast cereal.

If for a pudding - tinned prunes in juice.

I stew them gently in orange juice.

Stew them gently in black tea.

I’m not being flippant, but is there an advantage over buying tinned.

When I was being lazy as a child, my mum used to say to me "Don't just sit there like a stewed prune."

I have only ever bought prunes canned or dried, but remember stewed prunes and custard from school - delicious!

I do them in the slow oven overnight - but must admit I buy the soft sort for baking etc

My mum just put them in a saucepan with water. No sugar as prunes are sweet and simmered gently on a low gas until soft. Haven’t done that in ages. With custard, marvellous.

I would soak them in water until they plump up (maybe overnight) and them simmer them to reduce the water a bit.
