This could be the most boring thread ever 😂 but I'm looking for some new cutlery and wondered if anybody had any suggestions.

Actually there are far more boring threads mostly long and rambling.

Definitely Arthur Price. Dishwasher friendly and stylish.

I have a canteen of Cooper Brothers Sheffield plate that my parents gave us as a wedding present. Jesmond pattern, which never looks dated, but it only comes out on high days and holidays now. We’ve had an assortment of everyday cutlery over the years some of which has disappeared into a black hole that seems to exist to swallow forks and spoons, but everything I’ve replaced recently has been from Dunelm. Good quality, very durable.

All the cutlery sounds lovely but have to say I bought a great lot of lovely stainless steel cutlery from a charity shop and have used it with pleasure for years. No idea of the make but simple comfortable to use and washes well

If you are not looking for anything 'special' I have spares if you care to p.m. me.

We recently visits and antique fair and an antique centre and were amazed at the amount of good quality cutlery of all sorts on sale very cheaply. Some in canteens.

Do make sure you pick it up and feel the weight and handling before you buy. Some designs have thin spindly handles - it's worse if they're round - and you can't get a good purchase on them to hold the food in place whilst you're cutting. A bit of weight is a comforting feeling and something substantial to grasp would be my main criteria, however elegant some designs may look.

We have a best set of cutlery . I bought it from Tesco! Lovely simple design

We have David Mellor cutlery bout many years ago from the factory in Derbyshire. We interested an enormous amount of Arthur Price cutlery, still boxed, including grapefruit spoons and fish knives. We only use that for ‘best’ as there’s such a lot to get out.

Inherited! Although it is interesting!

I bought some lovely looking, supposedly stainless steel, cutlery from a well known online marketing site. Very cheap but looked expensive. After a few runs in the dishwasher, rust set in, particularly on the knives.

I now have a lovely Villeroy and Boch set. (my loo is V&B too)grin

Some stainless steel will rust it depends on the % of the different metals. Some are made martensitic which means they are magnetic and are easier to use in manufacturing but then are more liable to rust (proves I do listen to my OH!)

I agree with JackyB about trying out the weight before you buy, but for the opposite reason!
I bought new cutlery a few years ago, and I found most that I considered were too heavy. Some seemed designed for a shot putter to carve a bison. I'm a small vegetarian.

We bought a lovely set from Marks and Spencer.

We did too, some years ago, with some Christmas vouchers. Plain and solid for everyday use.

Arthur Price

Lots of choice - and several qualities. Stainless steel and Silver/plate.
Some made in the UK, some not. Some higher quality stainless - Some "kitchen" quality.
Some guaranteed for 20 (I think) years, some for (I think), 50.
They have a "sample service".

Just bought the 12 place settings we couldn't afford when we married.
😍

Oh, and they have huge discounts two or three times a year - and a factory shop too.

NotSpaghetti Fri 23-Aug-24 22:40:59

Incidentally, I found some sets really didn't work in my hands - so even if the forks were good the knives often would not be!
Please try - or buy only if returnable!

NotSpaghetti we have the 88 piece Arthur Price Bead canteen in a nice wooden box.
We bought it with Air Miles many years ago and use it every day.
It survived our bad house fire in 2017 when a lot of other things didn't, so is quite special 😊

NotSpaghetti Sat 24-Aug-24 04:23:38

V3ra - they still make Bead if you ever wanted to add to it!

V3ra Sat 24-Aug-24 09:33:32

NotSpaghetti yes I had a look at the website last night.
We only live half an hour from the factory shop though we've never been, could be worth a visit.

NotSpaghetti Sat 24-Aug-24 09:52:33

I can't remember what the discount was but if you see a discount advertised online and tell them in the shop they can apply it to shop prices (certainly used to).

So 20% off something already discounted in the shop.
Check when a sale is on maybe.

My friend had left me her complete six place settings, plus coffee spoons, plus fish knives and forks of Old Hall cutlery, hardly used, some never. She recently decided I should not wait for her to die to inherit, so she has given it to me! It is really beautiful, a very modern design, ageless really, although she had it for over 40 years! The design is called “Windrush” by Robert Welch. My advice would be to buy the best you can afford for longevity.

Lexisgranny Sat 24-Aug-24 12:28:02

Viner’s Studio still going strong after 56 years! I was lucky enough to get most of the range for wedding presents and bought the rest with wedding present money. I have managed to find uses for all those that we now consider obsolete - grapefruit fish etc. and I still enjoy using it.

B9exchange Sat 24-Aug-24 12:50:45

Another vote for Robert Welch, we had Alvaston satin John Lewis set given by my parents for our wedding 51 years ago, used every day and still perfect, sadly we have lost some pieces, so thank you Gransnet for revealing RW2 is the actual same set! I will pick up spares next time we are in the Cotswolds. We have collected a full canteen of 12 each of Radford for larger family gatherings, but that is bright, not satin, and not used every day.

Hil1910 Sat 24-Aug-24 12:52:01

My 40+ yrs old Viners cutlery set is still going strong.

Pattie47 Sat 24-Aug-24 13:09:40

I am looking for some reasonably priced cutlery where the forks arent "rough" most of the ones I see they are. Or maybe it's me?? haha

Missiseff Sat 24-Aug-24 13:09:48

Always Made in Sheffield.
